Customer Reviews

Much better than I expected! For the price, I didn't expect much. I needed more light than I owned for an upcoming project. I was going to rent some similar (but higher quality) lights from a local company. Then I ran across this set. For what it would cost me to rent lights for the time needed, I could own these.Putting them together was not difficult (except for the hoods)- the instructions don't help much. (Hint: make sure the hood rods are FULLY inserted when you attach the hood, they have a tendency to slip out a little, then you have problems). The stands themselves are pretty decent, but the fixtures and adjustable clamps are of lesser quality. If you plan on putting these together and leaving them in your studio - they will work fine. I would not suggest them for remote/location shoots - the hoods are way too difficult to put together. The quality of light and brightness is just fine, and having a separate switch for each bulb gives you plenty of variation. Not as handy as a real dimmer - but it works. If you need some extra, light-duty, studio lighting, and you have a place to store them (without tearing them down) - these will do nicely. For less than $150, it's really tough to beat these. As usual - Amazon did a great job with on-time delivery and packaging. 4Good for he price These are not pro lights, but for the money are very nice lights. I just need some lighting for a few portraits. These should work well. The lights are not super easy to put together, but not horrible either. Why not five stars? Because the fixture bracket and the tripod upright mount do not mate well. The lights are good, the stands better than expected, the way the two come together leaves much to be desired. With a bit more thought on how these two items come together, this could easily be a really great inexpensive product. Yes the light hoods could also be designed for better easier setup, but they are not the weak link in this purchase. All said, I still recommend the lights, I just wish the manufacturer would not have said, good enough it works; but instead said, how can this work great, because this one thing sucks much more than the rest of everything/anything else. 4Great quality, Incredible Price for the Studio or On Location Shoot* I decided to give these lights a try because they were so darn cheap for 1000w lights. My workhorse lights are Mole Richardson fresnels so I originally bought these as an infinite white background lighting solution. I run a production company that has done over 450 videos in the last two years so I'm always looking for more tools that I can utilize for a large array of applications. My expectations were low given the low price but I was blown away with the quality.THE PROS:-Good light quality.-Surprisingly durable construction (I decided to take these on some location shoots to work them hard and test their quality. I don't collapse them because I don't have time to waste setting them up with everything else that I have to set up, and they've lasted through the abuse of a lot of shoots over the past 3 months. I'm truly amazed at the quality for the price.)-Great background light AND key/fill lights (after they went through a test phase of shoots I loved bringing them along because they are a fraction of the weight of my production lights and if you don't collapse them then they're immediately ready for action, so these are now my "go-to" lights for budget/quick set up client shoots)-"Variable" power: although not dimmer adjustable, which is ideal, it is at least nice to be able to power off and on the lights individually, it's nice perk.THE CONS:-Cheap lights: after only 1 day one of the lights failed (this is unfortunate but remember that you're getting a steal for 10 cfl bulbs AND 2 soft box setups with fuses: and lets be honest, we're being fed a bunch of baloney about how long cfl bulbs last, I go through so many of these in my house and with my lights...seems like my incandescent bulbs lasted longer, ah incandescents, if only you were more energy efficient. Solution=ALWAYS have spares)-Short power cord (I'm used to 25 foot production light cords so it's unfortunate to only have 10 feet or however long they are. Solution=bring extension cords)-Long setup time (solution=use them in-studio or don't break them down as you travel with them, obviously you'll need to factor in how much space that will take up in your car or trailer).Bottom line: If you are just getting started and need some lights, look no further. If you need a number of soft box lights for your home studio, buy some of these, they will save on energy costs and get the job done (obviously having a variety of lights is ideal, e.x. fresnel, open-face, soft box, kinos, etc.). If you can spare the extra setup time on location shoots or you can haul them around without breaking them down then buy some for location shooting. You can see my video review at youtube .com/thevideomaverickI will be buying a couple more sets of these to have around the studio, lighting is everything for the quality of your image and this is simply the cheapest, most powerful, bang-for-the-buck light set I've found to-date.Best of luck! 5I could see how this could be an excellent product I think the concept for this lighting setup is really cool. Unfortunately, one of the fixtures did not work. I tried exchanging bulbs and fuses with the one that did work and confirmed that there was a short in it. There was no option to exchange when returning the defective product to Amazon. I would have considered doing so. However, I am kind of glad I did not. I would have used these for lighting at my red carpet. (I own a mobile entertainment company.) I bought it because of the video another customer posted showing a set-up of one in 8 minutes. But I ended up buying a Cowboy Studios umbrella setup instead. It does not put out as much light as these do, but the setup time is much much shorter. Unfortunately, the Cowboy Studios lights also had defects. But it has contact information for the company so I am in the process of trying to get replacement parts. If I can't then I will just return them to Amazon and keep looking. I very much appreciate Amazon's return policy. 2Overall for the price they are a great kit. The stands are not super duty I use these to shoot product photography and portrait photography. Overall for the price they are a great kit. The stands are not super duty, but are strong enough to support the light box. Easy to adjust and the light out-put is strong. Below is a photo taken with only these two lights evenly balance on left and right. White backdrop with no back light. Camera: Canon T31, ISO400, Shutter Speed 1/50, Aperture 4.5 5Seems like a good value so far I got these today and considering some of the reviews I read, I was pleasantly surprised. I have owned Chimera soft boxes in the past and although these are not Chimera quality, they were actually a better quality than I expected for the price. I didn't find them any more difficult than putting a Chimera together so I am wondering if some of the complaints about assembly come from people who have not used other soft boxes. There are some videos online that demonstrate the assembly, plus there was a full color quick start sheet included which pretty much covers the entire process. The soft boxes themselves are very decent and I like that they have both interior and exterior diffusion that put out a nice even light. I also appreciate the individual switches on the lamps and can see where this will come in handy to control the amount of light depending on the various situations one encounters, especially when lighting on location. The knobs on the light fixture are plastic and I can tell they need to be used with care and shouldn't be over tightened. The same is true with the stands which could be just a bit more substantial, but they are adequate. I would recommend that you position the soft box in line with one of the legs for a bit extra stability due to the fact that it is a bit top heavy. It also comes with what looks like a decent carry bag.The only issue I had was one of the metal tips on one of the rods came off...which of course shouldn't happen, but I suppose is the type of thing to be expected with a "bargain brand". I guess I will try to glue it in place but it seems to work without it if that fails.I set the lights up at a 45 degree angle on each side of a chroma key screen and brought the video into Premiere Pro. I chose an ultra key, clicked on the green with the color picker, and voila! The key was absolutely perfect, even with my subject using the same light from the soft boxes.Only time will tell how these will hold up, but I figure if I can get 12 paid shoots out of them, then they are basically free at under $10 a shoot. If you are on a tight budget I don't see how you can do better than these. 4I really want to say nice things about this light kit I really want to say nice things about this light kit.On paper and in the pictures it looks great. It has everything you should need for a studio set or a reasonably inexpensive traveling / location kit. 10 powerful, daylight balanced CFL will let you shoot all day with plenty of light. Soft boxes are nice an large, providing an even light flow. Cords are long enough to be useful - but extention cords would be helpful. Tripods are nice an tall. And the bag is easily large enough to hold it all in an easy to handle size. Then reality kicked in. The tripods are extremely light weight and unless weighted down cannot handle the weight of the soft boxes at a moderate extension over 6 foot tall. Mounting heads for the soft boxes leave a LOT to be desired - a locking bolt to hold them in place would be a good start. So would proper size mounting heads. Moving on to the lights - they're fantastic. Exactly as advertised and in individual Styrofoam boxes for protection. But the softboxes... oh the PAIN!!!! To say they are difficult to assemble is putting it mildly. There were NO instructions included in my kit for how these fabric creations go together. A video in a prior review made it appear easy - only 8 minutes to assemble. He much have practiced. The "caps" for the stiffening rods are for all intentions non-existent or little snippets of Velcro that form a pocket for the end of the rod. Trying to get the diffusion cap on was impossible - the Velcro attachment was either missing / fell off / too small to do the job. By the way only gravity and tension hold these rods in place. And as you might predict, in the middle of the photo shoot - gravity won. The bottom rod fell out of the light base and the whole box collapsed. One bloody knuckle later - as it slipped and nicked my fingers when being put back together, it was back in operation if looking somewhat dilapidated. As for the carrying bag, it makes for an awkward load when you have photo equipment and background to bring along with it to the location. It really should have a sturdier frame - it is just thin fabric - and wheels for easier transporting. I don't give the fabric carrying handles much time if I added the weight of my background to the bag.Overall rating: IT SHOULD BE BETTER.I'll be replacing the light stands as soon as possible with a far sturdier pair similar to my background supports as quickly as my finances permit. They are just too flimsy to handle any needed weight bags without the risk of bending. I suppose they might be all right if able to be left alone in a permanent studio set up. But certainly not on location or where they have the slightest risk of being bumped. The light heads / lights are keepers. Although I plan on get a better mounting head/bracket for them, if I can.I would gleefully throw away the soft boxes in a heart beat if I can find a more reliable option. They need a better sown in pockets for the rods, a sturdier way of attaching to the light head, would a mounting ring be too much to ask? As for the diffuser, the loops and internal anchor points need to be totally redesigned. A simple alligator style clamp / tension cord would be 1000X better than what they have now. The external cover is impossible to use unless you can get the softbox to ridged perfection. Even then, good luck attaching that Velcro as the slightest touch can have the tension rods slipping out. This really should be a good starter lighting set. It has everything you would need / want in one convenient package deal. But given that you'll soon be wanting (and needing) to replace / upgrade just about everything, I would recommend spending your starting money on a more traditional umbrella style kit. 2Works well but assembly a pain... Overall, it works really well for the purpose. Just a few minor downside. 1. The stand is made with cheap material. Sooner or later, I expect that plastic part that holds the box will break and I will have to replace it. 2. The assembly of the box setup with all the bulbs is a pain. I now just leave it assembled and transport as is (simply remove and fold the stand and carry the box assembled in the car). So far, I haven't had any issues of the bulb getting loose during transport. After I'm done, it just sits in the corner of my office, assembled... For the price, these lights are great as a starter light. 4These could've been better without charging anymore money These could've been better without charging anymore money, and perhaps even saving on materials. The poles that hold the umbrellas open are too long. The holes they go into on the lights are not re-enforced which only makes matters worse because I'm already warn out one hole on the first install. The stitching is also not going to hold up to the stress levels, so basically by not identifying and cutting the poles to an optimum length, the manufacturer chose to highlight the weakest part of the product. If I keep them, I will likely cut them down a little, because the tension on the fabric, poles, and lighting fixture is unnecessary and will only shorten the lifespan of all three pieces.UPDATE: I'm changing this to a solid 2. If you're aware of the problems with these lights and are ginger with them, they will probably work out OK. However, I simply inspected the fuse replacement knob and started turning it in the direction it says to turn it and immediately the whole component started turning and I started feeling that familiar feeling of torquing a component that's soldered to something and sure enough, it killed the entire light and I heard sparks upon plugging in. I might take a shot at disassembling it, but seriously, this whole package is a tad too far in the "Cheap Chinese Crap" column, and that's a column I use sparingly as I buy a lot of Chinese products of varying quality and these lights are pushing close to terrible, but they're not unusable. 28 minute set up This softbox kit, as other reviewers have said, is not bad. I was looking for more or less permanent lighting in my home office to shoot video blogs. These seem to fit the bill. I bought 4 of these puppies, two for the wall and two for me, and they do a good job. I wouldn't want to break them down too often. The are replacing a set of incandesant lights which were very hot. These babies do heat up a little but nothing like the regular bulbs. After setting up 3 of them, I timed myself for the 4th in this video. 8 minutes and 16 seconds start to finish. The light is from two of the first ones I set up. 4
