Customer Reviews

Simply Genius The absolute best way to balance a low pressure steam system. For years The steam system in our home had Maid O' Mist style vents that had been bent or painted over by a previous owner. My ignorance of how steam systems operate led me to believe that steam was not a great way to heat. After researching my options I found knowledge on a site that saved me thousands of $$ by not switching my heating system to something more modern. Turns out, venting the radiators according to size and distance from the boiler solved all my uneven house heating issues. No orifices to change, simply adjust the sliding vari-valve open if a radiator isn't coming up to temp the same time other are, or close down if the room becomes uncomfortably warm before the heating cycle is complete. Now that radiator in the Northwest corner of the house gets hot when it only would get half warm after a 45 minute burn. Made in USA, Fairfield, N.J. The fastest venting valve on the market proven by an independent study. 5Stopped working in 3 days I really wanted to love this. The house I bought had these valves installed when I moved in and they all stopped working. I thought it was because they were all old. I switched to some cheaper valves as replacements but after some annoying hissing sounds, I decided to invest more money and purchase the Varivalve again. It was great... for two days. There s minimal hissing and I could easily change the valve opening by sliding the little handle. But then at around the 3rd and 4th day, my radiator stopped getting heat. The valve was already clogged and rusted. This was exactly what happened with the valves when I first bought the house. These valves just seem really unrealible. 2Great adjustable radiator vent These radiator air vents are great for fast venting and adjustability on single pipe low pressure steam heating systems. Bottom line: These work very well. The adjustable aperture gives homeowners like me the ability to vary the venting rate for each radiator, and more easily balance my system. The only drawback I have had is with faster venting, you tend to pick up more moisture in the steam. The vents can get waterlogged and not function properly. These vents don't drain as well as other designs, so make sure the radiators are pitched toward the supply valve and that the supply valve is wide open. Generally you can just blow the vents out if they get water in them. If you are getting a lot of water in your vents, make sure your near boiler piping is correct, and that the boiler is skimmed and clean. Dirty or surging boilers or improper piping can cause wet steam, and lead to water hammer. Sometimes these vents can get stuck due to crud and deposits. A good soak in warm white vinegar will usually get them working again. I gave 4 stars due to the fact that I had a few that stopped working after a couple of years. Overall a pretty good vent. For great tips on understanding your steam heating system, check out Dan Holohan's books like "The Lost Art of Steam Heating". This is a must-have if you own a home with steam. FYI, 3 psi is pretty high pressure for single pipe steam. If your system is up in that range, you will damage your vents. We run on 12 oz of pressure with a vapor stat in lieu of a pressuretrol. Big savings on fuel. We also have installed 2 large Gorton main vents in a manifold on each main. This greatly improved steam delivery and cut our bills by more than half. 4I bought these for my 1950s house radiators the steam heating So I moved into a house from the 1950s being a child of the 1980s I wasn't used to steam heat. Previous owner took good care of the house but he left me with the cheap Home Depot steam valves which are made in China and when you shake them they feel like rock candy . After a few months I noticed that we heard this whistling sound in our kitchen and I realize that the steam was escaping because the valve wouldn't close. I read a lot about different types of valves holfman an other famous brands but I didn't like the idea of having to choose the size because the size of the whole depends how much Air escapes and makes your radiator heat up faster or slower . I didn't want to be put in a situation where I spent 25 bucks on a valve and the opening was too large heating up the radiator too fast and then having it fail and having steam come out of the large opening. I thought one at first and then I started to buy more and more for each radiator they're quiet they feel like very heavy lead weights they are very durable I would recommend to anyone if they hear it hissing or if they have water dripping from one of the valves just buy it . Just take a wrench try to go counterclockwise if the valve is on your left and if it's on your right turn towards you . Just make sure that the direction looks like it's counterclockwise and if you feel too much resistance try pushing back a little bit. After you remove the old valve just take some of that pipe tape use for shower heads the white stuff and wrap it around gently are used one layer just so I could feel the threads. I installed it and tightened by hand and then I realize that the valve was upside down so I tighten the rest with the wrench but not too much you will have to use a little bit of elbow grease but don't screw it all the way in. Once in a while I do here just a tad bit of a hissing sound it's not much I figure it's expected after all air have to escape but it's a nice town like the wish wish wish not the annoying sound like this teakettle going off. I can tell it's air because I put my hand next to it and I can feel the air coming out that steam. I think I have to mention is these valves can get pretty hot so you need something really durable don't settle for the Home Depot ones even though they're cheap because eventually they'll break they just can't hold up to the pressure of steam they should be banned. I know they're like $20 plus but it is the best investment I ever made 5Replace your old radiator valves now!!! When I first got my house I had replaced the original valves on my radiators replaced with Another brand. Had a plumber come in do the job, and got screwed 2ways from Sunday. The fee, plus the valves didn't last long. They clogged up and wouldn't let the cold air push through. Half the radiator would heat up. The other half was cold. Thus, higher heating costs. ugh!! Purchased these and replaced them myself. Turned on the heat, felt it immediately. Touched the end of the radiator, and burned myself! YES!! Had to re-balance the house, but once I did, perfect! Less heating means more savings. Approved by Dad. 5Great for certain radiators First of all, the venting capacity of these things is remarkable, but can be too much for some radiators.Had an issue where the upstairs would get way too hot while the downstairs giant radiators took their time warming. To fix this, I bought these valves for the big radiators downstairs. Worked well, but the upstairs was still getting hotter, so I bought more of these for the upstairs radiators assuming I could balance down to fully closed valves if I needed to. That's when the problems started. The upstairs radiators would get hot all way way across when the downstairs ones don't. Getting hot all the way across means more condensation for the valve to handle, and these things would get water logged and stop working entirely. What were once too hot radiators were now ice cold! Not great. The "closed" setting on these is still a LOT of venting, so even on the closed setting they were getting water logged. I replaced the Varivalve vents with some Vent Rite adjustable valves and finally have a balanced house! These things are outstanding for massive radiators that need a ton of venting. But they're far from a one-size-fits-all solution. Plan your venting needs carefully and know where these work best. 4Wish I knew about these years ago. Been in our 1928 home for 11 years and always struggled with getting our house to heat evenly with our oil/steam radiators. We just had a boiler service and when I asked the repair guy what he recommends he immediately mentioned these vents. I had been using those cheaper adjustable vents that didn't really seem to work so well, and some made a fairly loud hissing sound that was a real nuisance. I was a little hesitant to buy these given their relatively high price, but given the positive reviews and how much I was probably wasting in oil with the cheaper vents I thought it could be worth the added expense. I installed these in all our radiators about a week ago and they have been fantastic. No more annoying hissing, and I have got them all adjusted so my house now heats evenly from top to bottom, which I've never been able to do before. These vents are relatively small but weigh about twice as much as the bigger vents I've been using, so it really seems like these are built to a higher level. The other thing is my old vents frequently didn't last for more than a season or two, so if these last for several years I'll consider them an absolute bargain. Wish I found these years ago. 5Poor quality! I Purchased these last year and am a steam fanatic. I have read many books on steam heat and have two perfectly balanced and maintained systems. I loved these the first year I had them. As for this year not so much. They have been failing left and right. As some one with 32 steam radiators between both houses it has been a terrible investment. They seem to pool water in them and then rust in position and make it very difficult to adjust them. They have also been plugin and not reopening. I have switching to Hoffman as these ones fail. These are only good for extremely hard to heat rooms that do not normally get warm. 1Three failed in less than a month. Ordered two of these and they both failed closed after a month of use. You can't blame it on my steam system I have three other radiators with valves that are over 15 years old and those old valves are still going strong. It's also not a vendor issue, I went to the local plumbing supply store and all they had were these again. I purchased one and out of the box it was stuck open. Purchased a cheap $5.00 valve at the bog box store and it is working fine. 1Heat on the first night I don't normally write reviews but I was so impressed with this product that I wanted to share my results with everyone else with a steam radiator system. I moved into my 1920 home earlier this year and found that we weren't getting a lot of heat on our 2nd floor. The steam seemed to languish in the basement & 1st floor and never make its way upstairs. After a lot of research & advice (hard water might have clogged old vents, etc.), I bought some replacement valves but those didn't seem to do much. So after more research and advice, I decided to pay a bit more for these vents & installed two last night & set the heat to 70 (downstairs).Normally, I would have been huddled under a blanket but last night, I actually shed blankets. The radiator in our room was heating the whole room so well I actually went downstairs and turned down the temperature. It's great & I honestly can't describe how happy I am with the product. I think it has to do with the size of the opening. Compared to the other vents, this one seem to have an opening 2x the size when it's fully open.I'll be installing the others tonight and then will be on a mission to tune them to get a consistent temperature through the house.Great product in my opinion. 5
