Customer Reviews

Works Flawlessly This is the second NexStar dock that I have owned and I bought it based on my experience with the single bay Vantec NexStar USB 2.0 eSATA Dock NST-D100SU White dock which I bought back in 2012.The single bay unit with a 1TB WD Black Caviar hard drive has been connected to my desktop computer via eSATA as a backup drive for four years now and has performed flawlessly over that time. The new dual bay dock is being used with two 2TB WD Black hard drives, one as main storage and the second as a backup drive. This dock is currently connected to my laptop via USB3. All three hard drives are available from both computers via my wired network. One difference that I have noticed between the eSATA and USB3 connections is the tendency for the units connected via USB3 to go to sleep when not being used, whereas the unit connected via eSATA on the desktop is always instantly available. This problem probably has more to do with the USB settings on the laptop rather than a problem with the dock itself and is something I will investigate further. At this stage I haven't tried the new unit via the eSATA connection but I wouldn't expect it to perform any differently to the single bay unit.Apart from the (minor) problem with the USB3 connection both units have performed flawlessly and I would have no hesitation in recommending either dock. 5Works great, only one without clone button! This thing just works, no problems. I had a hard time finding a rock that didn't have a "clone" button. I've heard horror stories about people accidentally pressing their clone button and erasing one of their drives. Luckily this company makes a dual Bay dock that doesn't have the button. Great product 5Vantec NST-DP100S3 Excellent working product. So convenient to be able to check out extra drives without having to install them in a PC. I also use it for backing up PC and then store drives in safe place.Update: 05-22-2014 Spoke to Quick. Two months later drive keeps disconnecting when I try and copy 1.25gb or more data. Backup program now hangs also. USB device error appears as dock malfunctions. Too late to send back to Amazon. Waiting for reply from Vantech Support 5Nice, but critical information missing until page 14 of 29 page manual. I ordered this mainly as a docking bay with the benefit of having a duplicator as well. Got it in yesterday (010815) and tested it with an existing 2TB WD Black that was formatted as 4K. Drive read the data and 5 minutes into testing the HD locked up and had to power it and then system down. Tested drive with original Thermaltake BlacX single bay and data was fine. Did more research this afternoon and confirmed with Vantec that it is limited to 512k HD partitions. This limits this product hard for me (and would think most tech's). I cannot test it's duplicator yet as I do not trust it with partitions that are set any higher than 512k. I will say Tech Support at Vantec was fast, courteous and informative. Hope this helps future purchasers. 3So useful! But for how long? Not too pricey though. Used this baby with Acronis True Image. Was able to donate a stockpile of old laptops by backing up their images and wiping them with the disk cleanup app. Great machine. Very useful when you need it. But once you're done with it, as a regular computer user, unless you worked in the Geek Squad maybe at Best Buy or at a computer repair shop, the use plummets after the initial need. The saving grace is that it was reasonably priced. And I'm sure I'll use it again. Which I actually did later on after the initial use, so who know? 5Pretty good but could be better I have had this device for about 6 weeks now.I like that it can handle two drives of mixed size. It can handle 3 TB drives as well. It is reasonably fast as well. I have been able to sustain 180 MByte/s transfers with it when going from devices within the dock and 110 from the dock to my pc. It has worked well on three pcs thus far.I wish it had a usb port on the front, would have been nice. It seems it wants to be powered off and back on for hotswapping. I guess this is semi-hotswapping. The pc recognizes it ok.The front slot has trouble accepting 2.5" drives, but the back slot fits fine. I think this is because of the ejection lever. I was kinda mad that the white model is so much cheaper. Blue light on the front is very bright. So far I like this device and do not regret the purchase at all. Amazon was good enough to get it to me on time as well, which was very important. 4Love NexStars, but this one... I have a single-bay version that I've used for years, and I have loved it. When it finally failed, I ordered this dual-bay version. I put in two 3.5" drives, connected the eSATA, and the device kept cycling power when it tried power up the drives. One drive worked fine, but two appears to tax the AC power too much. I connected to USB 3.0 instead, hoping it might provide additional power, but having that additional connection also produced the same behavior.Perhaps I got a faulty unit, but there's no reason to have dual bays if I can't have two drives active at the same time. Returning. 2Intermittent freezes; fragile door During a critical backup, this unit caused multiple freezes affecting the entire system and requiring a reboot. Very inconvenient in the midst of a full system backup. It would freeze mid-operation and no further activity on that drive would succeed including a remount. This even made a shutdown or reboot nearly impossible.I swapped this out for an older Anker drive dock I still had, and the same operations finished without any problem.Less important but still a problem -- the door of the dock I used broke off and was unusable after inserting the drive. I'm not usually careless enough to cause this sort of thing.Later update: I had purchased two of these, and after writing this review, I went to try the other one. If anything it failed more quickly. The first one took about 20 minutes before the first real freeze; the second failed in that way in a few seconds, but then again by this time I knew what to look for and I now know the first one had recovered from some freezes and then proceeded from them. The long wait for a full freeze is probably the reason I did not diagnose the problem a while ago. 1Major flaw I really hoped that this will be a quality product, as I have another, older, Vantec NexStar USB enclosure, and I have been very happy with it.I tried to use this dock with a standard 2.5" hard drive. I connected the drive in the first bay, connected power, the USB cable and powered ON the dock. The HDD light for bay 1 blinked and then stayed dark, as a hard drive was not present at all.I put the drive into the second bay (powering off the dock, first) ... this time it worked. When I looked more carefully into the first bay, I noticed that the plastic bottom is not flat - there is a big bump where the USB 3.0 connector is. See the attached photos. This bump prevents the hard drive from seating properly and of course to connect properly. In my view this is a major flaw. I am not sure how this has passed QC.The dock is on its way back to Amazon and I need to look for alternative. 1Very good external bay for 3.5 and 2.5" Drives Works very well with every drive I have inserted into it. The plastic does feel a little flimsy but for the price I knew it wasn't made of titanium. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 is because the LED is BLINDING! Anyone who thinks otherwise must already be blind because this thing lights up the sky for miles it is so bright. If it sits on your desk (like mine) you will probably have to shield the light with a cup of pens or box of tissue or something it is that bright. It is also a little bizzare the way the two bays work. I cannot remember precisely which way it works but one of the bays only works with the esata connection while both will work with the USB 3.0 Connection but not simultaneously. I read something about port replication or something like that maybe it is a motherboard issue of mine but it doesn't really matter to me because I just keep both cables connected at all times and then I don't have any issues. Transfer rates are decent but not lightning fast. A good buy, it does its job and it does it well. But seriously, who wants an LED that blinds you? 4
