Customer Reviews

I tried good distance scanning radio for about 8 miles away from ... I have been testing this radio for about 3 weeks now on my truck vehicle to see how communications is holding up. I tried good distance scanning radio for about 8 miles away from coastline and to see if I could hear coast guard communications and it passed my test. The test was done in near California coastal near Santa Monica beach. When it comes to life safety I would not use any product until I m satisfied not what people say about the product. Don t get me wrong It s always is good to hear positive reviews but I like to convince myself first by doing what so many people don t like to do and that s spend time and get to know what your buying.Battery life was also holding up very well on rechargeable battery s and It would give you at lest 6 hours with no problems. I always keep extra battery on side no matter how well the battery will perform. I have not put the radio in water wet test that s because even when radio is mentioned it s somewhat water resistant I all ways protect my electronics from getting wet. So that s my review and I hope this helps you out making your decision. 5Durable, well constructed radio This radio is awesome and a great price. It can monitor 3 safety channels and weather channel simultaneously. You can also program channels and set it to scan through them.It comes with a cigarate lighter style 12 volt charger. You can also grab a 12 volt to normal wall outlet converter if you want to charge at home.I plan on charging it in my truck on the way to the lake but it takes about 3 1/2 hours to fully charge according to owners manual.Seems super durable and was able to turn it on and hear the weather channel from my kitchen table. Pretty cool.Hope this review was helpful, let me know if you have any questions. 5Pieice of Shyt The clip which holds the battery in has just broken. Great! Now when I have an emergency I have to hold the battery in.... 4Great product. My husband and his best buddy are avid ocean kayak fisherman. They each got one and were able to conveniently communicate with each other when they had to divide and conquer in the open ocean. The radio also gives me a lot of piece of mind because it allows them to easily contact the coast guard or other vessels for assistance in case of an emergency. My husband dropped his in the salt water a couple times and it still works just fine. The battery life is really good in that he only has to charge it about every 2-3 trips. 5cheap plastic clip holds battery on broke it's a marine radio, could save lives if something happened off shore, unit basically sat unused other then turn it on when in gulf, do a weekly radio test, nothing rugged ever, not hardly handled and the clip that holds the battery tight to unit broke, no clue how or why, never took off batteryreally flimsy cheap piece, so it's under warranty, no problem right, well they won't send that little cheap plastic piece, i got to ship it to texas and wait over a month, have not done it yet, been sitting on counter waiting for me to find the receipt and go to fed ex or ups and pay to ship itwould not buy another one for surehope we don't have a mayday or pan pan in the meantime 3Money well spent As stated by other reviewers the battery clip that holds in the battery is a very flimsy plastic part that needs upgrading also the belt clip does not snap on the stud on the radio. Other than that the radio seems to be well built. Comes with both AC and DC chargers and back up battery adapter that needs 4 AAA batteries. Radio sound quality is not to bad and has plenty of volume control. It s easy to set up and use if you read the instructions. Batteries easily lasted all day while out boating. Can t comment on flotation and water proofing. Over all not a bad unit for the money. 4Weather Alert feature, great speaker and large screen We use this to alert us to any hazardous weather conditions in the WX ALT mode while boating and have entered the codes for the area are in. The Speaker is loud and clear even when turned up to the max. Very satisfied with screen, so easy to read all the information displayed. 5Not bad, but avoid swimming with it. Decent support from Uniden I initially wrote a bad review for this radio since mine suddenly became fully unresponsive after about a dozen trips spaced out over about 15 months. Having said that, I roll my boat every time I go out and paddle in rough ocean surf all the time so I'm much harder on the radio than the average customer.Based on poor reports about customer service, I wasn't optimistic when I tried to contact them for warranty support. In fact, the first time I tried, I couldn't get through. However, when I tried on another day, I got through to a live person within 2 minutes and they quickly determined I needed to send it in for a warranty repair. They replaced my radio with a reconditioned in better shape than the one I sent so I was satisfied.I managed to kill the replacement radio they sent me after about 8 months. It survived many rolls as well as a number of swims, but it died died following a longer than normal swim during rescue practice. This radios will be very good for people who simply go out in wet conditions, and it's fine for an occasional dunking. But don't expect it to last long if you swim with it often. 3If you don't take the battery off it would probably be fine. Found a replacement online and fixed the clip The battery clip broke after a few months. If you don't take the battery off it would probably be fine. Found a replacement online and fixed the clip. I use this radio on my Hobie 16 catamaran during ragattas. I throw it in a small nylon back so I can listen. Has come in very handy during small storms that come up. The battery last a long time as well and the audio sounds very clear and the mic picks up everything very clearly. 4Better options First, I will say that this radio did work fairly well, when it was working. The audio was clear and the range was good. The screen was bright and the battery life was good. However, there are quite a few design flaws. First is the battery clip. Our clip broke within one month of owning the radio (fixed with a zip tie around the whole radio). Ours wasn't the only one with this problem, as we have met at least one other cruiser with the exact same issue (became a joke around the table that night).Second, is the "submersible" feature. By submersible, they mean you could drop it in a puddle 2 inches deep and if you immediately pull it back out, it will be fine. However, anything deeper than that and it will not survive. Ours died after a quick dip from the dock. Friends of ours died after just sitting in the dinghy in a rain shower (yes in the water at the bottom of the dinghy about 2 inches deep).Third, is the terrible belt clip. There is no retaining mechanism for the clip (it simply rotates and falls off). I must have picked the clip off the ground 20 times, before I finally lost it.I would have sent it back as we didn't even get 2 months of use out of it, but it just too much hassle from down here in the Caribbean.Spend more money and buy a better radio. Our last handheld was a Standard Horizon and it lasted us 3 years. I thought I would try a Uniden to see how it compares. Sigh, I will now be replacing it with a Standard Horizon HX150 2
