Customer Reviews

Great portable disc drive So far this is the best disc drive I have bought. with only one USB cable I have downloaded all the photos and documents from my old laptop, and then downloaded through my new laptop all the photos (3000+) from my wife's tablet. Love that it is so small - therefore very portable. 5Great Device, does the job well (so far) I would give 5 stars but the best I can live with is 4 seeing as I have only had the drive a few months and use it occasionally. I use it to backup Work and Personal data from the DELL PC at my home office; it is the second drive I do this with, since I did have a passport style drive conk out on me a couple years back, just when I needed it most. So, I have my data backed up nowadays on two separate USB drives, including this one, and periodically swap them out.The price point is competitive for what else was on offer during purchase. It's the first time I have used the Transcend range, so if anything changes in the coming months, I'll be sure to post an update for you. I do recommend the product based on short-term use and reliability. BTW: I'm using the drive in short bursts only. The drive does not make any noticeable noise and sits quietly next to the PC, minding its own business, until the backup software kicks-in 3 times a week (I use Cobian, its free and very reliable). I'm also backing up only file or folder ("differential") changes, so after the initial backup when I got the Transcend, the data and run time is probably a GB or so and about 5 minutes on average. Please don't use this as a measurement of read/write performance; this will be determined by your own PC, USB interface (2.0 or 3.0) and OS, Processor, and RAM on your machine. Best to do separate research for detailed read/write stats. Hope that helps!UPDATE March 2014: So far, no real issues, although one thing came to light which I had overlooked. When you use the drive for the first time, ask yourself what format you want the drive to be. For example, if like me you are running 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro, the "NTFS" file format is the best one to use because it handles larger blocks of data differently when copying. Plus it is also more secure because Windows allows you to assign permissions and privileges at the file level, whereas FAT32 cannot do the same. I also have some large (10GB+) files, and during a copy to the Transcend Drive, Windows was unable to complete the operation as the file size was beyond 4GB (i.e. the FAT32 issue). Just know unless you are running Windows 98 or some other OS that only supports FAT32, reformat the external drive (using the program that comes with it), to NTFS and you can avoid the problems I encountered above. I hope this helps. From a reliability stand point, the drive works well and serves my (less than 4GB file) needs on FAT32!! If I get time later on, I might offload all the backups and start over using NTFS; I'm all in favor of an easy life... 4the one terabyte boat anchor. I bought this item back in April and struggled with it for 4 months before just putting it back in the box in frustration. The first thing I discovered when I got it is that it isn't solid state, it's got a disk drive in it - but that was not made clear. If you simply made the difference clear by calling these things a "disk drive" and the other ones with no moving parts "solid state". That I could have understood. I'm sticking with solid state. Disk drives are obsolete. The next problem I ran into was that contrary to the content of the come-on, there was no software/firmware disk included with is as promised (I don't think the box is even big enough for a disk) and the promised manual contains 2 pages ( 2" X 3") of English language which contained literally nothing of any use. So I'm left with a boat anchor except that it probably floats. 1Simple, better than the rest Good, higher quality than other brands when reading reviews & talking to people.Fairly simple to use though I didn't use their software as it was a bit complicated to install and get going.Just the usual drag drop function instead of buttonpress sync, mainly for backup of email, videos and pics no heavy duty office stuff, programs etc. 4Transcend 1TB external hard drive Love this drive! Plug and play! No setup, no formatting, just plug it in and my computer recognized it within a few seconds and I was using it. It is powered by the computer USB connection so no extra power cable needed. There is also software on their website you can down load so you can automate backing up your data onto the drive. How much easier can it be?My plan is to back up my desktop data onto this drive. Then when I want/need to I can use it with my laptop. Also, it's quite small, about the size of a larger cell phone. So the next time I visit my folks I can easily take this with me and show off pictures of my house, etc.--something I've not been able to do. I have pictures going back for over 10 years that they haven't seen, I am so excited by this! 5Great little HDD for backups. USB powered is a plus! I bought 2 and love these. I store photos on them as backups to my online backups. 2TB drives for the price, hard to beat. Love the fact that they're USB powered. Small and compact, worked right out of the box. Came with a bit of software that I didn't want, just removed that. I'm not a super user so I can't comment on the read/write rate or the durability at this time. They're small, quiet, and USB powered. That's what I wanted and that's what this unit has. I'd recommend. 5Great external drive, very fast, and small also! Wow! Love this device. My old external was much much larger than this and was a 1 TB also but it was kind of slow, and took up valuable desk space. This device is almost as small as my iPhone. Easily tucks away behind the laptop, and extremely easy to pack should I need to take it with me. Got it at a steal of a price too. Oh and it's super fast, and very quiet. Recommended! 5Works great, love the 3.0 USB connection for faster speed, unit is quiet So far so good. I like this Transcend 1TB with USB 3.0. It is quiet and has been working great since I got it about one month ago. I deleted any software on it because I use ViceVersa 2.5 backup software to run my backups. It is in use every day for approximately 15 hours and runs as I specify, every 60 minutes, if any file changes are detected. I will follow up if there are any problems encountered. 5Five years as Time Machine drive and still going strong I bought this external hard drive five years ago, and set it up as the Time Machine disk for my then brand new 11.6" MacBook Air. It's worked flawlessly ever since. [I recently aw this review again, and realized I'd goofed on my arithmetic. I bought it five years ago, not six as I originally said. Except for that, this review does reflect my experience with the item.] 5Great drive and it's holding up very well so far! My wife likes to watch her tv shows on the go. She is VERY rough on her electronics and broke my last 3tb drive bringing it back and forth with her. When I saw the deal of the day on this drive I snatched up two. One for her to use transporting her tv shows and e-books around and one for me to use to move files between laptops. I have to say I am very pleased with the purchase. The drive is small, about the size of a Note 2 phone, but slightly thicker. It is light and compact enough to throw in your pocket. It is also durable. I have watched the wifey drop it on a few occasions and it has gone on to work without a hiccup. That shows that the protection inside is doing its job.Speed is another plus for this unit. I was able to move a 100 GB folder containing a large number of pictures within minutes. The final plus in my opinion is the fact that it is USB powered. My larger drives (2TB-3TB) all require power supplies and are not very portable. This one slips in the pocket and plugs into any machine you have that is USB compatible.Overall, a great product if you are looking to backup or move items or, more importantly, if you need to transport data often and want it to be protected from drops or getting banged around. 5
