Customer Reviews

Disappointing when it doesn't work After many years away from the art I got this kit and some others to reintroduce myself to electronic soldering projects. In this project I had one lifted trace but everything else went together smoothly, even the tricky part at the end where you have to connect three of the lights on the 'wrong' side of the board. Assembly was under an hour, I think.Unfortunately, it doesn't work properly. While it turns on, lighting two red lights and two opposing green lights, it never changes. The speed dial didn't have an effect. I've checked my work and tested the connection on the lifted trace, but I don't see where the problem lies. Several other people have reported problems in these reviews, so I don't know if the problem is me or a bad kit. I made it for my three year old and his cars, and he doesn't mind turning it to 'change' the lights, but I wish it worked fully. 2A great little project for a kid! No PCB issues. My 6 year old daughter had no problem soldering this little kit together. We've experienced no lifted pads or traces, and everything works as intended - see the traffic light work at the end of the videoSome complaints about lifted pads and traces could be attributed to suboptimal soldering technique, not the PCB quality in this kit. Solder quickly, like shown in the video, don't overheat the PCB, and you'll be all right.Liquid rosin flux also helps. This traffic light kit is a great little pathway to STEM! 5Good for just practice and if you like soldering itself, not for a finished product As is the case with all the soldering kits I've bought so far, minus the digital clock off ebay, none of them really work so far, though have enough bits to solder for good practice. This one was more confusing than average as well with the LEDs on top that aren't well labelled in the instructions on how to put them in. 3Great little kit and lots of play value. Not suitable if you've never held a soldering iron before. Built for Grandson Pretty simple kit, if you have a small wattage soldering iron, and some practical experience with printed circuit boards and small components. Very good value, and a very high quality p c board. I'm becoming a real fan of Velleman kits, having built a pair of their 3.5 watt audio amplifier kits. These are a lot of fun and a real bargain! My grandson LOVES the traffic light. 5good training for fixing lifted pads and traces My seven year old did this as his fourth soldering kit. The first three (elenco and projects from tindie) he found very easy and needed very little guidance. On this project he lifted several pads and broke some traces. The other comments complaining about poor quality PCB seem to be fair, at least when it comes to learning kits for the less-than-perfect.I helped him jumper the obvious failures, but the kit still does not function correctly, and the instructions (such as they are) do not include a schematic or any other circuit description (they don't even identify the IC as a Johnson counter) that could assist with debugging. So far I haven't identified the remaining problems that leave one pair of green LEDs lit and no changes. 2No lights for this stop light! Traffic jam! I show power thru most of circuit board while testing. None of the lights work. I checked all polarity directions are correct. Even asked an old pro friend of mine and said the soldering job was done very well. Both him and I didn't know what the problem was? Probably just need to stay away from an brand named Velleman. I'd take a back picture as well, but only lets me take only one. 2it worked but... i got it back when i was practicing soldering. it worked for 1-3 uses then it got all finicky. recommended for model train setups if you dont want to waste a crap-ton of money on a modelers black box which is the same circuit. the circuit board was a bit of a dumb idea though in my opinon 4This was a great project for my homeshooled 14 year old who is ... This was a great project for my homeshooled 14 year old who is considering engineering. My husband is an elevtrical engineer and was able to guide him in the soldering as well as provide the equipment necessary. I needed to contact the company because it wasn't working and I heard back in a very timely fashion. He was very helpful in identifying the 2 parts my son had switched on the board. When the parts were put in their correct location, it worked fine. 5Nice kit for a 9 year old, too bad the PCB quality is so low. This was the first kit my 9 year old soldered. There are many pieces in this kit, but most are diodes and resistors, so it is relatively easy. The main drawback of this kit is that the quality of the PCB (board) is very low. That's where my 30+ years experience in soldering came in... I had to jumper one lead, and solder over a few others before it started to work. 3It's okay, but it only partially worked for me...Wasn't fully functional. The middle row of LED's on the kit I received simply do not work. I've checked and rechecked every single component and every solder joint on the PCB. No mistakes, so there must be something wrong with the components I received with this kit. I've assembled many many Velleman kits, and this one is simply not as good as other ones they have to offer. 3
