    Great Polarizer Great Polarizer! Purchased this for my photographer husband for Christmas. He uses it all the time and loves it. Highly recommend. 5wimpyWimpy polarizer. Barely shows any effect.1Filter is great, shipping package not so great.I really enjoy using this linear polarizer on my prime lens when taking pictures inside the school gym and there are reflections from the sun off the hardwood floor. I use it on my Nikon D7100 camera and have not had any focusing issues. Too bad the supplier shipped it to me in a thin cardboard envelope because one of two filter cases were crushed. I don't need to use the polarizer all the time and would store the filter in its case.5Linear polarizer, poor extinction ratio.I ordered several, only one out of 5 was the correct part, the others had wrong part tracking label stuck on their package. So then this 5th one does change ratio as you rotate relative to another filter, but it does not go very dark. I have some cheap plastic polarizing film which has a stronger extinction ratio. It might possibly be enough to get some benefit in photography, but I expected stronger and found another product which did extinguish quite well, so this partial extinction is disappointing.2Good value, well constructed.I have one for every lens, and have for decades. Really deepens and brings out the color of objects and the blue sky in a photo. Especially when those objects are 45-90 degrees from the sun.5Great when combined with a circular polarizerAlong with the same size Tiffen circular polarizer I have a great performing variable neutral density filter. These Tiffen filter are a great value and performers. No need to use cheapo ones or unreasonably priced filters. The thread feels exact and they do what they are supposed to do.5Five Stars Perfect for the Canon Vixia R800 5feels sloppyTo tell the truth I have not taken one single picture with this filter yet. I just now installed it on my 18-105 67mm Nikon D-90.I own polarizing filters for all my older Nikon film camera lenses so I know what a well made filter is supposed to feel like. This filter just feels cheaply put together.Instead of turning freely and feeling tight, it is sloppy in the way the two filter parts are held together. The filter rocks slightly as it turns, enough that it just feels wrong.I will have more to say when I take some photos with the filter installed.Edit:I went to the airport where the fire bombers were taking off to fight a fire at Yosemite. There is a noticeable vignetting when shooting at full extension of the lens 105mm.This is slight but noticeable. I was able to remove it in post editing with a crop. This is another thing to think about when framing your pictures.3Would spend more for the more expensive one next timeNot great at all. I was taking a picture of a scene with high specular reflection and although I was able to reduce the polarized light I didn't even come close to eliminating it. I verified with a cheap 4 dollar linear polarizer that I was able to completely remove the reflection with that. So the extinction ratio of this filter is very poor. Updated: Measured the extinction ratio to be 10:11Weak Polarizer, inferior to HoyaI agree with the other reviews that this polarizer is weak, and only blocks part of the polarized light. When turning this polarizer in front of my monitor, all of the light should be blocked. It wasn't. A cheaper Hoya filter blocked all of the light. A cheap pair of plastic polaroid glasses blocked all the light. See attached photo. The light transmission was similar until the filters were turned. The construction quality of the filter is very good, but I can't use it for its intended purpose, so I'm returning it.2Weak polarizer, perhaps applicable to some wider sky shotsI compared this Tiffen Linear Polarizer to a Cokin Linear Polarizer on my Olympus e-p3. The Tiffen seems to lose about 1.5 stops of light compared to the Cokin which imposed a 2 stop light loss. I had no trouble focusing on high-contrast targets with either polarizer using my e-p3 (it has no mirrors or beam-splitters).Using a third polarizer (threaded for astronomy use), I tested the polarization strength of both using the camera's light meter. Using spot-metering, i hand held the second polarizer at the angle yielding the least light transmission. While using aperture priority mode, i compared the shutter speeds. I found the Tiffen to be 40x weaker than the Cokin. This metering measured number was also confirmed by a substantially weaker ability to cut reflections. On flat surfaces, i was left wanting the Tiffen to cut a bit more glare. On water, the region rendered as transparent was too small for my tastes (even using a 90mm equiv lens).I was curious if this weaker polarization would allow use of wider angles of sky shots (without inducing weird gradients in the sky). In fact, the sky gradients, though still apparent, were indeed more gradual and thus more tolerable. However, the 37mm caused vignetting in the corners on the wide end (28mm equiv) while using the kit lens on the e-p3. The Tiffen's easy to turn filter rim is a bit too long.With regards to color rendering, the Tiffen seemed superior. The Cokin polarizer rendered colors slightly desaturated and slightly warmer than the Tiffen. A very slight vintage look from the Cokin (my Cokin really is vintage, so perhaps i should not be surprised). They were very close, but the Tiffen was definitely better.My recommendations:If you are looking for a polarizer to cut strong reflections/glare, purchase another brand. The effect you will get will be stronger.If you are looking for a polarizer for shots that include a lot of sky (i.e. pushing the wide end of what can use a polarizer for), consider purchasing a Tiffen. You will be happy with the color rendering. I recommend buying a larger filter and using a step-up ring to avoid vignetting at wide focal lengths. For the micro four thirds system, a 52mm size should be large enough, though it would be nice to hear from someone with a 24mm equiv lens to confirm.It is really too bad Tiffen does not sell two linear polarizers, clearly labeled strong and weak or perhaps telephoto and wide. Two stars reflect the failure to label this product as a weak polarizer and the vignetting at wide angles.2They work to protect my lensesI live in a very dusty area and these are great to keep my lenses protected. The polarizing functions work well when I remember to rotate the lens filter. Most of the time I forget, unless I am shooting into water, which I don't do much. Most of my pictures are taken at night and the filters do not seem to block enough light to make a difference in my pictures. Solid quality glass.5
