Customer Reviews

Fine story about KurdsEnjoy to read it : funny, moving, with a good and accurate look about Kurds and Kurdistan. 5I loved this book!I loved this book! It opened my eyes to the real plight of illegal immigrants in Europe, who flee oppression seeking a better life in freedom and yet find themselves trapped in a glass prison. Good intentions get snagged in unpredicted complications. The characters are deeply touching in their humanity. The story is told in a simple, straight-forward way, yet goes directly to your heart. 5Couldn't put this down!Sophie Hardach's writing style and understated humour meant the book never had a dull moment - once I started reading I just couldn't put it down. She is an impressive new talent and has sharp insight into human nature. 5A Masterpiece. I want more!I closed this book and realized I had just read a masterpiece. One of those books that lingers in your thoughts after you have put it away. Sophie Hardach tells us a story about peoples and problems that modern-day Europe is forced to deal with... despite itself. A book of our times, reflecting the multicultural world we live in, written with objectivity, in a straight-forward, honest tone. She puts forth a story with a simple prose that carries the reader away without him realizing how carefully written and plotted the story is. But I think that what I loved the most about this book was that Hardach's presentation is acutely intelligent without being pretentious. Her story is written with warmth, yet no na vet . 5No connectionSophie Hardach writes with a sure hand, every word counts, every character beautifully and quickly described. Yet I could not feel anything for the protagonist, who marries at age 17 a young Kurdish boy to help him stay in Germany. After 7 years they are still married, but not even good friends it seems. I felt no connection between them nor to me, but one learns a lot about the Kurds, which is a plus. 2
