Customer Reviews

A Mystery that's fun to read"The Postmaster's Daughter" was first published from July to September 1916 as a series in "Country Gentleman" and then printed as a novel the same year.It is a fun-to-read detective story, with (of course!) a love-story thrown in, and kept me guessing at the "whodunnit" until fairly far ahead. The characters are described so well you can easily run the movie in your mind. Some of them are likeable, some less so, but all are very much "there".The book is neatly divided into 23 chapters (probably the way the story was originally serialized in the "Country Gentleman") with such intriguing headlines as "The Face at the Window", "The Seeds of Mischief", "On Both Sides of the River", "A Matter of Heredity" and "The Truth at Last". Don't some of these sound like the names of episodes in Midsomer Murders? To briefly summarize the story without telling too much, let me just say that well-to-do bachelor John Grant finds the body of a famous actress he once was in love with but has not met in three years on his own grounds, miles away from her London work place. What was she doing there, and who had a reason to want her dead? The village near his house is soon buzzing with rumours and suspicion, especially when it becomes known that Grant spent part of the evening of the murder in the company of the prettiest and cleverest girl around, the postmaster's daughter. What roles do the calm and polite village chemist, the butcher, the landlord of the "Hare and Hounds" and the sporty horse dealer play? And where does the ghost of Owd Ben fit in?Grant summons his best friend for moral support when everyone seems to point at him, and it does not take long for Scotland Yard's best men to appear on the scene. In the end, all is revealed, although the culprit is not brought to justice (in a way, he is, but I won't say another word!).This was, as you probably have guessed, a free ebook from the Kindle store, and one I very much enjoyed for its witty dialogue and good characterization of people. 5Good read with great use of forgotten vocabulary!Great read. Written in a simpler time and of simpler life experiences, it captures life in early 20th century England very well. I'm on my second Louis Tracy novel and he SEs to use a similar formula here - nice young man put in circumstances beyond his control which create suspicion, complete w young love interest. Works well, for me at least. Proves you don't need graphic sex and violence to write a good book. Liked it a lot. 5A beautiful actress is done to death in a quiet English villageThe body is found by John Grant on his own property. Grant is a healthy, clean-minded young Englishman of independent means, once a soldier, now an essayist. The locals like Grant yet immediately suspect him of having done the actress to death. When it's revealed that Grant once proposed to the actress, it becomes difficult for Grant to pursue his friendship with the Postmaster's pretty daughter. After all, Grant may be hanged for murder.Happily Scotland Yard takes an interest in the case. I first encountered the detectives Furneaux and Winter in The Strange Case of Mortimer Fenley. Winter is big, bluff and inspires confidence. Furneaux inspires laughter, for he is small, voluble and Frenchified a precursor of Poirot. The two almost always get their killer, by putting their two very different heads together. What I enjoy most about Louis Tracy so far is that he doesn't torment the reader with undue suspense. His affable detectives are invariably on the side of lovers. They quickly recognize who is innocent, although it takes a bit longer for them to identify who's guilty. First published in 1916, this detective novel has a lighthearted quality far removed from present-day Noir. Tracy's detectives look at human nature first, forensics second. There are lots of humorous passages bickering between the two detectives, gossip among volatile villagers, posturing on the part of the local constable, outrageous behavior by Grant's eccentric friend, a follower of revolutions around the world... There are maniacal and malicious villains doomed to be outsmarted by the clever detectives. Altogether The Postmaster's Daughter is a very pleasing vintage mystery. 4Another Louis Tracy at the top of my favorites list!If you love early 20th century mysteries, Louis Tracy is your man. This is a wonderful mystery set out in the english countryside, where an actress (and former lover of the hero) is murdered on his own property. Excellent cast of characters in a small village, and with the help of some savvy and rather charming guys from 'the Yard', the culprit is caught (of course)...and oh yes, there's a lovely romance as well. A great rainy day cozy mystery. 5This is a very good Winter and FurneauxThis is a very good Winter and Furneaux. The character interaction is very well defined. Hart and Peter, two sideline personalities, also contribute to the repartee that makes these dectectives attractive and contribute to the seemingly light hearted process of solving the mystery. Very good read. 5Top flight Louis TracyDetectives Winter and Furneaux at their best take on a hopeless-looking circumstantial case, against a slightly prickly writer, for the brutal murder of a woman he once thought he loved. All characters are well-drawn, most are increasingly likeable as you get to know them. The denouement moves breathlessly fast. 5Charming old-fashioned storyThis is a charming mystery story, a period piece written and set in the early 1900s, and woven through with a bit of light romance. I love well-written old books and was delighted to discover this one by Louis Tracy, free in the Kindle edition. There was the occasional "printing" glitch, but nothing highly annoying or indecipherable. If you like old books and don't mind idealized womanhood, you may enjoy this book. 5Louis Tracy Is one of the best turn -of- the -century mystery writers to have been ...Louis Tracy Is one of the best turn -of- the -century mystery writers to have been rediscovered for our reading enjoyment. The Postmaster's Daughter is, in my humble opinion, one of his best works. The depth of his narrative leaps off the page and his depth of characters and rich descriptions of place and time is almost unparalleled. He and others, like Fergus Hume, give the reader a glimpse of Edwardian life in the UK in the 19th and 20th Century. A treasure!, 5Very Good Mystery pub(1916)The characters are fully developed and the vivid descriptions of that period in England suck you into the story.. A very good read. 4Victorian mysteryThis was a very good mystery that kept the true murderer hidden until nearly the end. I like books by Louis Tracy, but this one was very verbose from about the halfway point. I still recommend this as a very good book. 4
