Description

Shayne Barlet has been kidnapped, his powers disabled and his memory altered. He's having a bad day…and he doesn't even know it. Shayne believes he's living the ideal life. He attends a great school in the Midwest, gets along with his roommate, and has even met a girl who seems perfect for him. But it's all a lie. His girlfriend is deceiving him, his roommate is in on it, and perhaps most unbelievably of all: he's not from Earth. He's not even human…and neither are they. As he discovers his own buried psychic abilities, Shayne realizes the only truth he's been told is perhaps the most improbable one: his girlfriend, a member of the invasion force, seems to truly love him, even though her actions are rife with deceit. Shayne soon uncovers a vast conspiracy involving planetary conquest, erased memories, holographic worlds, and dark agendas. He vows to expose the truth, set his people free, and stop The Overtaking…once, and for all.

Customer Reviews

Wonderful fun new series!!I loved Lieske's first book Not What She Seems so when I saw this new book I knew I had to try it out too.I am so glad I did because this was such a fun, different, unique, refreshing read. This book has it all, some mystery, some romance, some action, some paranormal, great setting, great characters, I could go on and on.I am so excited to see what happens next with Shayne and Danielle and all their friends! 4Ends in cliffhanger, no second book.I loved this book but I ve been waiting since 2012 for the author to complete it. She leaves it with a cliffhanger (it was written in 2011) and never finishes the series. So don t read it unless you like having no closure. 4Great for any ageI was very impressed with this book. Had me hooked from the beginning. No frustrating, obvious grammatical errors that I have found prominent in most self-published books. The author focuses on the story and the romance without focusing on or involving sex. Making it appropriate for any age. I can't wait for book two! Not being a patient person, I hope it's soon. 5The OvertakingThis book is without a doubt a fantastic read for any adult. Although not usually into this type of story (more of "a who dun it"....loved her book Not what she seems.) This is about romance and mystery with a twist of the supernatural. A good book for all!!! I truly appreciate it when an author can write a book that is not using profanity in every other sentence. The story has teens and adults in the storyline, I truly be happy to share this with my fifteen year old granddaughter. Thanks Victorine for a wonderful and entertaining time! 5Riveting Sci-FiFrom the first page, this is one of the most riveting science fiction works I've read in a long time. Sounds corny, but I really couldn't stop reading until I'd finished. People are involved in a major planet-wide deception and are losing their freedoms. Memories are "re-wired" repeatedly. Just when the main characters are discovering more of the truth about how they've been deceived, they're caught and have their memories wiped/changed. Trusted people turn out to be villains who are robbing this planet and turning it into a wasteland. I can't wait until the next book comes out! :) 5continued excitement thru-out the bookThere was continued excitement thru-out the book. Lieske made the end of each chapter a comment or some other way of leaving you hanging with 'What is going to happen now'.? It encouraged me to get reading to the next chapter to find out what did happen next.Easy to read and fits the category of a good youth reader! But left me again, hanging at the end, unsure of what will happen next. Because it is probably meant to lead us into a second volume - It ended very quick and with a sad feeling of despair. 4Imagine there's no evil - Not What It SeemsEver wonder what a world without badness would look like? Or how it would feel to live in a perfect environment? The Overtaking takes you to a place where goodness reigns and bad thoughts can simply be erased. People are transplanted from a harmful society to a manufactured city without crime and worries.Danielle believed the premise. She thought she was kidnapping Shayne for his own good, taking him out of an evil environment and giving him paradise. But Shayne's memory wipe does not go as planned, and he retains his mind-reading abilities. Memories of a mother he was programmed to forget pop up, and he starts to realize that things are not as they seem. As Danielle's eyes are open, she and Shayne fall in love and discover a nefarious plot built on an illusion. The story is fast paced and fresh--cute and heart-pounding and joyous and gut-wrenching all at the same time. This book was a great start to what will be an epic and exciting series. The cast of characters includes many talents and special abilities as well as two members from the overlord group. Shayne is a cutie-pie, Danielle is gutsy, and Jennaya upbeat and friendly. My only complaint is that one of the heart-throbs died. He had so much potential! (sob, sob, sob).Summary: Delightful sci-fi romance and great start to an engaging series. Victorine Lieske has gathered a personable cast of characters, Shayne, Danielle, Nolan, Celeste, Jennaya, Kellec, Asia, and Gita to fight an evil empire bent on mind controlling a peaceful planet and raiding it for their resources. I can't wait to read the next installment. 5Pretty good bookInteresting sci-fi. Didn't realize that's what it was when I first started reading it, and when I realized they were people on another planet, not just someone on Earth who had powers, I was kind of skeptical, but kept reading. It was very enjoyable and I liked the pace. Didn't know it was supposed to be a series when I got it (if I did, I don't remember), and am now anxious to get the next one to see what happens to these people. I have always been fond of stories with "ordinary" people who happen to have extraordinary powers and this delivered. 3LOVED THIS!!!!I was organizing my kindle and accidentally clicked this story open. The words captured my attention and reminded me of the teaser called The Gathering that I had previously read and enjoyed. Unable to tear my eyes away from the story, I was drawn deeper and deeper in and kept thinking how lucky I was to download such a wonderful story. In The Gathering we meet Danielle as she reluctantly kidnaps the powerful and handsome Shayne to have his memory erased and his powers taken away. In The Overtaking, Shayne is an unsuspecting student in college with no idea he or his fellow countrymen have been abducted from their land and put in a Holodome to live. Fortunately, Shayne's memory of his mother starts to surface and then he gets some of his power to read other's thoughts back and Danielle, who has fallen in love with him, becomes afraid of turning him in and believing that she might have been lied to by her own people. What follows is a lot of adventure and heartache, but a desire to be free no matter what the cost. This is a fabulous dystopia that anyone who liked the Becoming (Daughters of Saraqael Book One) series would enjoy. It does not have any profanity or sex but does have a very sweet love story that any YA would enjoy. I and my daughters (ages 15 and 22) will most definitely be reading the next book in this series.Would I/Did I buy it? Free DownloadWould I read it again? YESWould I recommend it to friends? YES! 5Great soft sci-fiI'm not much of a sci-fi fan, but the Overtaking was a really enjoyable read, feeling more like an urban fantasy or paranormal romance. The writing was fresh and fun, great turns of phrase and fast paced. Being an indie book, it's also nice to point out that this read as clean as any book from a traditional publisher (no errors or typos, etc). The story kept me interested throughout, and I enjoyed the romantic elements. The romance between the main characters was set up really nicely, particularly with the "set backs" the romance kept facing, and how the characters re-approached their relationship each time.I would give this 5 stars, except that I wish it had ended more wrapped up. I understand there is a sequel coming, but I personally prefer a book to come to a more complete ending even with a sequel on it's heels. I am totally hanging out for the sequel now though. I can see this story and world being developed into a great series. 4
