Customer Reviews

I don't get all the fuss... I was apprehensive about buying this based on all of the complaints about "hacking" it to make it work right. Yet it seemed so straightforward--using a simple machine principle we all learned in grade school. Now that I have one, I have to say I'm really confused why folks can't make this thing work. It's easy--I had it almost perfect three minutes after I took it out of the package. It's not really a gimbal stabilizer, as those are active devices that use motors. It's basically a damping device--much like the weights on the front of target rifle. The added mass smooths out the nutations of the one's hands. The Roxant Pro amplifies the effect of its weights by setting them a distance from the camera, thereby increasing the force required to move the arm. I guess I'm confused why people are removing weight from their units. The weight is what makes it work. More weight, more damping. (Within reason, as the ball joint will encounter too much friction under extreme weight.) I have the full set of weights on mine, and I've moved the arm as far out as I can. Even with my light-as-a-feather camcorder, I get a little sway. (And NO visible vibration whatsoever.)I also see complaints about ball joint lubrication. The instructions specifically state that lubrication is necessary, and the responsibility of the owner. I recommend a droplet of synthetic automotive oil. No thin oil with ever lubricate as well or stick to the metal as long. I use Mobil One on everything from garden tools to guns, and it stays put for months.Proper technique is required for using this. You have to practice being slow and fluid with your motions. Sudden starts and stops look terrible on video anyway, gimbal or not.I gave this four stars because the instructions didn't include even a simple photograph illustrating proper technique. That would go a long way to assist buyers with assembly and testing, and would probably lower the returns rate. 4RECEIVED USED. MULTIPLE ISSUES. SAD. Product itself is GREAT. However, it seems that I received a PREVIOUSLY OWNED roxant pro. I tried to give the benefit of the doubt in testing it with my camera on, ignoring the obvious scuffs & wear and tear from a previous owner, but then when I removed my Canon G7X, the grip on the Roxant which makes physical contact with the camera came right off. Clearly it was not manufactured (glued) correctly & clearly I received a defective/used. Now I have to postpone what I needed to shoot because of this easily avoidable mistake. 1Solid, agile & effective. Perfect for GoPro users. I am extremely satisfied with this device, and glad that I decided to purchase. It is compact, light weight and very effective. These were my needs, and my needs have been satisfied. The price is great for what you get, and the Roxant team goes out of there way to make sure their customers are happy.Upon ordering, Amazon made a few errors and sent me the wrong/incomplete components. Since Amazon is contracted to fulfill the orders, I can't ding Roxant for this. Oh well, stuff happens. Here's where I was blown away; When I realized that my order was screwy, I figured I'd try to email Roxant first, before blasting a negative review or returning the package. This was late at night. I never imagined that they'd reply within minutes, and we're very concerned that I was unhappy. Upon clarifying what went wrong, I was then immediately contacted by the owner of Roxant that evening, and he personally assured me that I would get what I needed, and in a timely manner. Sure enough, within a couple days they had me taken care of and running. I've not experienced such quick and effective customer care in many years, especially from a low cost product provider. They have a customer for life, and I've already referred my friends and family through social media.Regarding the Roxant Pro device; it's exactly what I needed. I work with a group that produces action sport films, and we do a lot of work with GoPro cameras. I wanted a steady device that could be easily hand held while trailing skaters, and that wouldn't be fatiguing or awkward. This was it. I spent time carefully balancing my setup, and a couple hours practicing my technique. Those two steps are crucial to success with the Roxant Pro. I look forward to many years of abusing this system, and getting buttery smooth motion shots. I couldn't be happier. Thanks again guys.-Rob 5SECRET TO SUCCESS. AMAZING Device! There are many videos to figure out how to set this gadget up, but as a mechanical engineer, I found the one key step, which likely, many folks overlook. I might create a YouTube vehicle showing the details for here is what you need to do.After following available videos for installing the camera and handle, the key is the weights. This turns out to be the easiest way to do this. I would definitely have regular steel washers available in addition to the supplied weights, as this step will allow you to quickly get the OPTIMAL weight. With handle attached, camera close to centered and the smallest weight on it, while holding the handle in the normal position, rotate the camera down so the main arm is PARALLEL to the floor. Then simply release the camera and see how it rotates back up to the vertical position. The key here is to add or subtract weight until when you release the camera from the 90 degree position, it should rotate back up VERY SLOWLY. Once you have too little weight, it will not fully rotate back up. Too much weight and it will rotate up rather quickly. For my GoPro Clone, even the smallest provided weight was too heavy, and I ended up with about 8 medium sized steel washers. Once the camera rotates back to the normal position SLOWLY, then you can make minor adjustments to the weight part of the main arm either left, right, up, down, etc. to make sure the camera is exactly LEVEL when you are holding the handle normally. Don't take this step lightly. Perfect weight balance makes this Roxant an amazing gimbal. 5Good - not perfect - but usable Overall, I'm pleased with this purchase, but in order to get the most out of this product, you have to pay close attention to three critical things:1.) Lubrication - out of the box, the ball joint on the gimbal is dry. That means it's going to squeak a lot as well as catch when you move, resulting in a shaky and disjointed video. A drop of 3-in-1 oil did the trick for me, making the gimbal smooth and silent. Before lubricating the joint, this unit was essentially unusable, so don't skip this part.2.) Balance - this can be one of the more frustrating aspects of this device. It needs to be perfectly balanced on all three axes. This unit is highly adjustable, giving you many options for balancing, which is great when you're using a camcorder or DSLR with articulated view screen throwing your balance off to one side. Be prepared to fiddle with it for a while before you get it perfectly balanced.3.) Technique - this is probably the single most important factor in getting good results. Don't expect to mount a camera, balance it, and be off and running. If you want to minimize sway and wobble, you absolutely must learn to move with the camera. You have to dampen all of your movements, from your footsteps to your decelerations and panning. So many negative reviews on here don't account for the learning curve of devices like this. You have to use it quite a bit before you get the results you want.Another thing to keep in mind is that this device is not for every shot. It's absolutely great to get some motion into your work, or if you're following a moving subject, but keep in mind that a good fluid head tripod is a much better solution for things that involve rotation. That said, what this unit can do is much better and easier to accomplish than if you were either hand-holding your camera or moving a tripod on a dolly. It goes where you go, and that includes narrow hallways and tight corners.I would recommend this unit, but be prepared to work on it. The included weights are a good start, but they are not one-size-fits-all. A handful of steel washers to use as weights can be exactly what you need for some cameras. 4Perfect for indie folks trying to step up their game on a shoe-string budget So far, I LOVE the stabilizer. I used CV joint grease on my gimbal since I figured it would make for nice smooth movement, and wouldn't need to be reapplied too often, plus it's what I had on hand :) The videos were very helpful for learning how to set it up.I have pretty bad benign tremors, so without a stabilizer I could only shoot with a tripod if I didn't want my scene to look like we were taking fire from an enemy star-ship.I record live music performances, low-budget music videos, and artsy textural stuff for live visuals to go with the weirder, less dance-oriented side of electronic music. This is really allowing me to get much more dynamic shots and will give me the freedom to film things "out in the wild" going forward. I am planning to take it to Moogfest in May and try to get some cool footage. It's still kind of sinking in, honestly, because this opens up a lot of options that weren't available to me at all before. The quality of the build on this thing is great, too. I love the metal, I love the grip on the interior side of the arm so you can easily clamp it at an angle. Clearly y'all did your research, and your engineering is on point. This is perfect for indie folks trying to step up their game on a shoe-string budget. I really appreciate what they ve done here. 5Cheaper equivalent does the job too I ordered this stabilizer along with the Sofoto PRO Video Camera Stabilizer to compare them together. The Roxant was about $64 when i ordered and this one was $29 ( ~2.2x difference)When i got them, they looked pretty much same from outside (see pics). For the product itself, it seemed slightly better in its finish compared to Sofoto, I tried out the stabilizer looking at a youtube video and both were very easy to setup ( I am a beginner and this is my first stabilizer ).. I tried it out walking around in the home, going up and down the stairs and also running around ... and the stabilizer did really good job. It was swerving a bit, but i guess thats something i need to learn and adapt too.. but there was no noticeable running/walking motion in the video itself. One small difference with Roxant was that Roxant had 3 different size weights, but Sofoto one had same size 3 weights.I ended up returning the Roxant, as there was nothing worth the 2.2x cost. 4Too hard to work. I'm going to try to be nice on this review and list out MY cons to the product. First off this is my first stabilizer, so I'll say maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I bought this for my GoPro Hero. First off maybe I need a Ph.D. to figure out how to balance this thing. I looked at YouTube videos and still can't get the thing to work. I didn't think it should have been that hard, but maybe I'm just stupid. I can't for the life of me get this thing to work, it's frustrating. Now it sits in a drawer collecting dust. If this is your first stabilizer I would say spend the extra money and get one that does all the stabilization for you, you know one of those electronic ones. Lastly, the damn thing is too bulky and hard to transport if you're backpacking. Just not for me. 1Who Says High Quality Has to Cost More? How I Use the Stabilizer? So far I have just used it around the house. Following my wife as she works in the garden, walking up and down steps, etc. Trying to practice before I need to use it for something important.I purchased the device to film work processes. I have have a consulting practice that works with e-commerce companies to help them build problem solving skills into their culture / drive waste out of processes through the application of Lean and Six Sigma methods. Filming and evaluating processes is a very important part of improvement journey. I am excited to have higher quality video for my clients to work with. What About the Design and Construction?Still early, but first impressions are all positive. The Roxant design is very elegant - great construction, high quality materials and finish, well engineered (everything lines up and works). It is pretty intuitively obvious how to use the device. I can appreciate how much thought, engineering and manufacturing control has gone into this product. It is profoundly simple in design. 5Once hacked it is good I am glad that I bought it and would definitely buy it again; it occupies an important niche in my kit. But here are some things to consider.OUT OF THE BOX - All in all the design seems to be fine except for two things. The rotational inertia is too low and the friction in the gimbal is too high. It is possible that with some cameras the combinations of mass, the distributions of the mass, and the centre of gravity will be such that it will be OK, but I had some difficulties. I suspect that most of you would too.HACKED - If you buy this, be prepared to do several things. First, you should go out and buy some large washers to act as smaller weights. If you throw these into the mix, it makes it much easier to balance the steadicam. Secondly, you should oil the gimbal to reduce the friction. Thirdly mount some weights so that they are as far away from the axis (the line that runs from the centre of rotation through the centre of gravity) as possible. 4
