Description

Ginny Connors doesn't believe in vampires. There's totally a rational reason her dad is a lot more bloodthirsty and a lot less interested in food than he used to be. Still, she hangs a cross on her bedroom door. Just in case. When Ginny discovers people aren't the guests but the main course at her father's New Year party, she wishes she could save the day with garlic pancakes. Instead, she must face the limits of her daydreams, and attempt to stop the monster her father has become.

Customer Reviews

Not your Father's Vampire NovelGinny Connors is my kind of heroine. Smart and sensible, she refuses to become a victim of her surroundings. Bearing the scars of a troubled life, she works through some serious issues - being raised by a widowed father, her sister's substance abuse, and the usual angst that comes with being a 17-year old from a small town - without allowing herself to be defined by them. When the people she loves are threatened, she comes to the realization that she alone can solve the problem that plagues them. But to do so, she must make an enormous personal sacrifice for the greater good and walk amongst the evil she loathes.Motivated by love, she faces her choices with firm resolve.Deborah Bryan's first novel is an easy read, with contemporary language that flows in a comfortable, familiar style. And best of all - it's the first installment of The Glass Ball Trilogy! 5An incredible readGinny Connors is an intelligent, level-headed, compassionate character who just happens to be the daughter of a vampire. In this novel, we follow her journey as a heroine committed to saving innocent people from her monstrous father--while maintaining an identity as a sociable teenager with typical high school struggles. If you're thinking that vampire stories are not for you, that's okay. This book is much more than that. It is the story of a girl who overcomes many obstacles to find herself stronger and more capable than ever. Ginny knows something must be done about her father's vicious tendencies and her only concern is making it happen. Her strong will prevails throughout her battles, which are both internal and external. While trying to plan how to best accomplish her vampire-slaying goal, Ginny remains close with and loyal to her girlfriends and boyfriend, none of whom can know the truth about her father. The balance she manages to achieve with drastically differing facets of her life is impressive. Ginny navigates the troubled waters with tact and diligence.Just as Ginny is a complex character with complex problems, this novel offers deeper themes that underlie its captivating story. Anyone who has suffered from abuse, neglect, dysfunctional family dynamics, or even self-doubt -or knows someone who has- can find something in these pages that will ring true to them.If you enjoy excitement, courageous characters, and unexpected plot twists in your novels, you'll love "The Monster's Daughter." I ended up having to treat The Monster's Daughter the same way I did the final couple of Harry Potter books...I had to ration myself to only a chapter or two per day. Why? Well it's simple...I didn't want it to end. I knew that once it did, it was over and the excitement of 'what's next' would be gone.Deborah Bryan has an amazing voice to her writing. She is able to breathe life into Ginny Connors word by word. The more I read about her, the more I wanted to be in the story to live it with her. Ginny is the perfect heroine for today's world; she's strong, determined and courageous, she is not wimpy and whiny. She finds herself between the proverbial rock and hard place with tough decisions to make. She's young but that doesn't stop her from making a life changing decision to protect those who she holds near and dear in her heart.I loved every minute of The Monster's Daughter. I look forward to reading more works written by Deborah in the future. She really shouldn't keep all of her writing talent hidden from the rest of the reading world. 5Wonderful! A great read for adults and teens alike!!This is a vampire story, and while supernatural, it does not follow the usual far-fetched, fantastical storyline. In fact, this book completely draws the reader in and makes everything seem so believable. We get to observe as the main character, Ginny, grapples with decisions in very much the same way that real-life people do. I found myself completely drawn in with Ginny, and her story, in such a way that I also wanted my daughter to know this character. When I was done with the book, I left it on my daughter's desk. Several hours later she came out of her room to tell me she was absolutely hooked on the book, and that she was already half-way through it. She completely devoured the book that day, and the next morning it was back on my side-table. When I asked her what she thought of it, she said, "I LOVED IT! Ginny is so REAL." That statement was followed by, "I hope this person writes another book!!" I could only respond... "ME TOO!!!" 5???To be honest, I felt a little lost during this book. When reading the opening chapter, I felt like I had started in the middle of a book rather than at the beginning. The story tends to shift from here to there and not follow a concise format of any kind. I did like that this book stuck with the dark element rather than going down the usual everyone in vampire land is happy and wants to join the cult, but I think this book could use a little work before it lives up to its potential. 3 stars. 3Brilliant first novelThe Monster's Daughter is the brilliant tale of a vampire's daughter and it can be appreciated on many different levels. For those fans of the Vamp-genre, this novel contains some of the most chilling descriptions of blood lust I have ever read:She sensed so many new nuances to the world. Around her, she heard the soft pitter-patter of hearts pumping blood through living creatures for miles around. She licked her lips at the thought of all that blood. As fascinating of a description as this is, this novel is about much more than blood lust. It is a coming of age story for a young woman named Genevieve, or "Ginny" as she is known to her family and friends. We see Ginny's struggles with realization and eventually acceptance of the man her father has become once he undergoes "the change," and we follow her as she searches for a normal life amid the torn shards of her own tragic existence. We accompany Ginny as she hangs out with her girlfriends and we smile as she steals moments of freedom and meaning with the love of her life, "Joey." We laugh with her as she teases her friends, and we sit vigil with her as she lives with a cross above her door to repel the father-vampire who she fears in the dead of night. If The Monster's Daughter is read as simply a coming of age story for a heroic young woman (and you will have to read the book to see just how heroic she acts for I refuse to spoil it for you), you will love it. If, however, you read it as an allegory for the life of an abused child and young woman, then you will find great satisfaction and perhaps even catharsis as you read the this amazing first novel by author Deborah Bryan. Any abuse survivor will tell you, as Ginny notes, Her life was not like a half-hour sitcom where her remaining family would gather around the hearth and share a hearty laugh about how they'd all just misunderstood each other.Instead, Ginny waited for her father to attack her and take her blood, her life, from her, in the exact way that an abused child waits for the abusive parent to initiate the beatings or the sexual assaults. And through it all, Ginny maintains hope and struggles to fix the broken relationships that rock her life down to its very foundations. What truly amazed me about The Monster's Daughter was not the allegorical treatment of abuse. In fact, if this novel were written in merely allegorical terms, the characters would not have been drawn with such complexity. All of the principal characters appear multidimensionally and character, not allegory, drives the plot. Ginny makes decisions on the fly and under extreme pressure and this character who we grow to love and respect takes her future into her own hands when she decides to fight back against this man, this monster, who is her father. The manner in which Ginny, or Genevieve, chooses to fight the Monster was as unexpected and audacious as this reader, for one, could have imagined, and rather than spoil the plot for you, dear reader, I strongly recommend that you purchase The Monster's Daughter and observe Genevieve's desperate battle for yourself. 5Different Type of Vampire StoryDeborah Bryan gave me a new perspective on family dynamics! Even though Ginny lives with her sister and father, she is mostly alone. She is troubled and torn about her new reality. She is strong, but doesn't realize it and she wants to do what's right. Lucky for her, her mother instilled just the right amount of compassion and good in her to help her deal with the evil surrounding her. She is easy to root for! As I read this story, I had no idea where the author was taking me, what would happen next or how the story would end. A very entertaining read! 4An ok readThis was a little difficult to get into for me. I found the main character kind of irritating. I did enjoy the idea the concept that she doesn`t want to be a vampire, because you don`t see that much anymore. The book does pick up some. I don`t want to give too much away, but there is a kidnapping that seems to come out of no where. Clean up the language some and it would be a good book for younger teenagers. 3A good book with one or two niggles but definitely a page turner!!I enjoyed this book and read it cover to cover in an evening. It had a nice mix of humour and dread and came across as a little unique. Writing was quite reasonable and not littered with grammatical issues. IMO - its a 3.45 - 4.0 star read.It was nice to read a book that feels mostly complete but I have to say it would have been improved by letting us know what happened to Joey as someone else mentioned. The one area for me that I felt could have been better was that when Ginny finally comes to her momentous decision, it didn't ring true as it seemed to be antethical ?? (Is there such a word?) to what she was fighting. For the sake of the story, it probably had to go this way but the author need to put more angst? emotion? into the decision to make it ring true. It was pragmatic like Ginny but I think it could have been better sold.Having said that I think most teens and a good many adults (I'm an oldie myself) would enjoy this book. It is a good read with an engaging storyline. 4Lyrical, Beautiful, Beastly and Brilliant!Looking at the book cover as I write this review, I see how perfectly it matches the dark, cold and gritty tone of this book; it also beautiful and scary, as is the book itself. I started this book slow and finished it fast; the masterful writing draws you in, slowly but surely, as you wonder where the author is taking you. Often funny, majorly sad, equally scary and powerfully poignant, Ginny is such a great character; one of the most realistic I've read in YA fiction -- and I'm not just talking YA vamp fiction, either! It struck me as I read The Monster's Daughter how without the vampire parts it would still be a riveting, dark and lyrical tale of one dysfunctional family; almost any dysfunctional family. There is just so much going on here; all of it brilliant. (And I almost never use that word!) I would stack The Monster's Daughter up against any of the best YA vamp fiction I've read in the last three years, and then it goes them one better. I can't wait for what happens next... 5
