OMAR TYREE DOES IT AGAIN!
The Philadelphia-born author, who jumpstarted the urban fiction craze more than a dozen years ago with Flyy Girl, presents the riveting new tale of Shareef Crawford, a celebrated writer of romantic fiction, who leaves his sunny mansion in South Florida and returns to his Harlem roots to pen a true crime book that may just end his life.

Craving more respect for his craft as a writer, particularly from his peer group of urban men, Shareef allows an enticing female fan to pitch him a no-holds-barred tell-all about an imprisoned Harlem gangster who admires Shareef's writing. With insane courage and an iron will, Shareef, the street-smart intellectual, finally gets a chance to write something more edgy and noteworthy.

However, the Harlem streets he returns to in 2006 have changed, and the stakes of survival are higher now than they've ever been. Amid the rise of high-priced condominiums, a changing population, young criminals gunning to make names for themselves, and old criminals fighting to become legitimate businessmen, Shareef finds himself caught in a real-life thriller where past foes become friends, and trusted friends become dangerous foes. Nevertheless, the Harlem legend is hell-bent to do anything he can to gain the respect on the streets that his career as a writer of women's fiction has failed to give him.

The Last Street Novel is another urban classic as only Tyree, the self-proclaimed Urban Griot, can write them!

Customer Reviews

Enjoyed it...As a reader and lover of African-American authors I had not, up to this point, read anything by Omar Tyree. Not sure how that happened but it did, but I have now corrected this oversight. I did a little research to see which one I would start with because since this was my first book by him I didn't want it to be one of his "bad" ones because then I would be hard pressed to read his other works. I choose this one because: 1. it wasn't a brand new one. 2. People seem to like it. 3. It was the only one in our store. Well... actually there was `Pecking Order' but yall didn't seem to like that one AT ALL!Anyway... when it was all said and done, I really did like this book. When I saw the title "The Last Street Novel" I thought it was going to be a street novel, especially with a gun on the front cover. To my surprise it wasn't anything of the sort...not really. He did delve into the street life of Harlem but the story wasn't completely centered on that. This book could have been called "The Writing of the Last Street Novel". Shareef gets himself into a serious situation when he talks to a criminal who is currently locked up. This crook wants Shareef to write his story since he's an extremely popular writer. But he's a writer of romance novels. So why would a hardened life criminal pick Shareef to write his story? Good question... get the book to find out. While thinking whether or not to write this book things start to happen to people and they aren't good. Harlem has a better communication that AT&T and in no time the streets find out that Shareef is considering writing a book on Harlem. Man, you would think that the government said it was going to release the real secrets on Area 51 the way Harlem reacted! Some VERY bad people did not want this story, any story to get out and they would really stop at nothing (including murder) to make sure that doesn't happen.Shareef is right in the middle but has this belief that Harlem won't hurt him. As if bullets, when shot, choose if they are or aren't going to hit the intended target! Shareef is a hard-headed but determined brotha who will see this, whatever this turns into, out. Along with his Harlem he's got a marriage on the rocks. And when I say "on the rocks" I don't mean the pretty ones at the parks. I'm talking Mount Kilimanjaro type puppies! His wife won't give him none and he's not about to sit around and wait for some lovin'! That of course is just the tip of the iceberg because have other issues. Fans if Omar will enjoy this book and first-timers will this book as well. Thinking I might read "Flyy Girl" next because it's a classic and yall seem to REALLY like that one. 4Great bookThis book has lots of surprises! Easy to read & keeps your attention throughout. You want to know what will happen next so you keep reading! A hard book to put down! 5Maybe Not the Last, But One of the Best 4.5 StarsThe Last Street Novel by Omar Tyree was a literary journey into Harlem and it's street culture. As Harlem becomes more like uptown, the underworld is struggling to survive. Shareef Crawford is a New York Times, best-selling author who has come home to Harlem to promote his newest book. He has become famous and rich, writing romantic fiction for the ladies. Shareef is handsome and charismatic. He has an estranged wife, Jennifer, and two small children in the suburbs of Fort Lauderdale and a mistress ensconced in an oceanfront condo in Miami. He is living every player's dreams. However, he is conflicted because while he has defied the odds and is an educated, celebrated author he is concerned about what his work means and his ties to the street. He is also in turmoil about his marriage. He loves he and she loves him but he and Jennifer are separated because they are both strong-willed people with no ability to compromise. At a book signing at the Hue-Man bookstore in Harlem, he sets up a rendezvous with a beautiful woman in attendance. Shareef is looking for sex but Cynthia has a hidden agenda. After a romp in the sheets, she convinces him to visit a prisoner, who was once a kingpin on the streets of Harlem and he does. Michael Stringfield has been locked up for ten years and is looking to have the `true Harlem' story written. But before a word can be written mayhem ensues and Shareef is caught up in the street game in a way he never expected. Friends become foes and foes are friends. People are dropping like flies and he is literally running for his life. The Last Street Novel was an enjoyable, roller-coaster ride through Harlem and it's underworld. What was most interesting was the way Mr. Tyree allowed us into Shareef's head and heart and allowed us to know enough about peripheral characters to make them read like real people and not just stereotypes. He also did a wonderful job of showing the conflict of a black man who has done it the right way and left the `hood' but who is still very much attached to his community and its people.I recommend this book to anyone interested in a well-written, well-told story. I thoroughly enjoyed the Last Street Novel.Angelia MenchanAPOOO BookClub 4Not really satisfied....This book was okay.....at best. This is my first book from him and I strongly feel I should have tried something else. This book was a little predictable and focused on things in the book which was not relevant at that particular time. I actually had to force myself to finish it. 3And novels aren't my favorite kind of booksMy wife loves novels, so I decided to buy her this book and I told her that I would even read it when she was done. I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. I actually finished the entire book in one day. And novels aren't my favorite kind of books. I truly enjoyed this book. I even asked my wife to email Omar Tyree and let him know that The Last Street Novel is destined for the big screen. 5my booksOh my such a good read! These books I have taken on my cruises to read while vacationing. Get's you from beginning. The prices to buy a slighted used book is incredible. Am I going to buy new ones for just my vacations but also my home? Heck yeah! Best thing since sliced bread!! 5NOT DISAPPOINTEDMr. Tyree is an EXCELLENT writer. I didn't expect this book to be any different. I truly enjoyed the journey that it took me on as a reader. You will NOT regret purchasing this book. Keep up the good work sir. 4Best Novel by Omar TyreeThis is Omar Tyree's best novel yet. When I picked it up, I could not put it down. It only took me a day to finish. 5Five StarsOmar Tyree is one of my favorite artist. 5(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Don't Let the Title Fool YouMy first piece of advice is don't let the title fool you and go on any past notion of what you may have heard about Omar Tyree or his previous titles. THE LAST STREET NOVEL stands on its own and I doubt anyone who actually reads it will think otherwise. Yes, the title may throw you into a preconceived notion of what is meant by it, but until you read it, you're simply guessing. With that said, let me introduce best-selling romance author Shareef Crawford.Shareef is married with children, but just can't get through to his wife about his needs. As she goes on and on about her wants and desires, he counters with his, but sadly, they don't seem to connect, neither knowing how to compromise. So, yes, he has a few women on the side, women who are interested in finding the romance, love and lust featured in his many books, women who will do the one thing his wife won't. And though Shareef has no qualms about his sexual needs, he is a bit more complex than what one sees on the surface. He's from Harlem, knows the streets, and wants to write about things that challenge the normal way of thinking. He wants to relate to other men through his books. On the flip side, he knows how his bread is buttered...writing romance. While doing a signing in New York for his latest bestseller, Shareef selects the lucky lady for the evening. Though a simple romp in his hotel suite is what's on his mind, he finds a lot more than expected. He is even challenged to write a more thought-provoking book based upon the life of a NY gangster. Word gets out and Shareef finds himself the talk of the streets, and not in a good way. Friends turn on him, and eventually Shareef starts to question not only his reasons for wanting to write the book, but also other arenas of his life. These things show that Shareef really isn't a bad person, he just makes bad decisions occasionally; just as everyone else does. The problem is...some of his decisions may cost him not only his life, but also the lives of those he loves.THE LAST STREET NOVEL was fast-paced and thought-provoking. And, though I didn't read any of the back cover or other corresponding media pertaining to the book, based upon the title, I had my own preconceived notion of the contents. This was, however, one of the best books I've read this year. Tyree has managed to perfectly blend contemporary fiction with street fiction and THE LAST STREET NOVEL is the best of both worlds. The characters are so well-developed, it's as if you're right there beside them step-by-step. When the bullets start flying, your heart rate ascends along with Shareef's and you actually share his experience. And, though all of those things were done really well, the dialogue was my favorite part of the book. Through Shareef and other characters in the book, Tyree displays wit, humor, intellect, and a need to truly communicate with others. Even the hardness and realities of the street came through clearly, and I'm a country girl from Arkansas.I loved THE LAST STREET NOVEL and would highly recommend it to any reader as it doesn't simply sit in one genre. Those who enjoy thrillers and suspense will love it, as will those who like relationship-themed stories, and even those who like street life. It is, once again, a perfect blend of contemporary fiction and street fiction.Reviewed by Tee C. Royalof The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers 5
