Customer Reviews

Quick read. Very nifty little story.Lender s a smart author: He doesn t try to explain every single little twist and turn of the characters financial dealings and double-dealings, because frankly you d need to take a course in investment banking in order to understand it all, and it would just slow down the story. Instead, he gives you just enough information, from dialogue and from what s going on in the characters heads, to know and understand: Holy cow, these guys are friggin sharks. They re every bit as much predatory, razor-toothed sharks as any unscrupulous lawyer you can imagine. Probably worse. It s supposed to be a civilized world, but once you start talking about the loss of tens of millions of dollars and clawbacks of your personal wealth the knives come out. People may talk about due diligence and responsibility to the bondholders and blah blah blah, but really, it s just a dirty, no-holds-barred, back-alley fight. The badguy in this book is something of a psycho, but I found him totally believable. And Lender s protagonist is really up against the odds in taking him on, but fortunately, he s very smart and has some steel in his core (which I think you have to, just to live in this world). It s not a perfect book. A couple of the characters have some quirks that come off as a little stereotypical. But that s a quibble. This is a very fast-moving story, and I found it entirely satisfying. 4A great book...After reading David Lender's first book, Trojan Horse, I looked to see if he had other books. I was pleased to find The Gravy Train. I bought and read it as quickly as his first one. If there was any disappointment it was that it is a novella and the story ended too soon. I thoroughly enjoyed Trojan Horse; The Gravy Train is even better. Similar to Trojan Horse, his characters are great. They are very human. I also found the path the story took very compelling. While I generally knew where the story was going, I never knew for certain. I even found myself trying to solve the "problem" they were in and certainly didn't come up with anything as simple or elegant as Mr. Lender. (Which might explain why I was never an investment banker and he was.)I think what I like about David Lender's books so far is that they feel real while still allowing you to step out of your own - if that makes sense. I suspect his 25 years of "real world" experience has given him a deep well to draw upon as he transitions to an author. 5Where's the story?Disclosure: I downloaded this book for free as a special offer. The Gravy Train has a lot of potential as a story, but really doesn't deliver on it's promise. The characters lack any real substance, and the story races through as though it's on some sort of deadline.Every time I think the characters and story are going to evolve, we seem change direction. 2Good summer read...At first, I had no recollection of reading this novella. Not a good sign and that is why I gave it 4 stars. After reviewing the Amazon X-ray that brought the story flooding back to me. This was a good story. I liked the investment aspect. The author didn't dumb it down. It was refreshing to have a Wall Street story that not everyone was an 'evil fat-cat'. I did have to suspend belief that the hero was right out of school. I will pick up another by Mr. Lender. 4Great Book!I used to spend a lot of time in New York in the mid to late 90's working on M&A and debt / equity deals, as well as the bankruptcy workout of a NASDAQ registrant, and this book is about as real as it gets (for me): I kept having flashbacks as I was reading, as a lot of what the author describes really happens - he does a great job pulling from his own experiences.I found myself unable to put this one down (to the chagrin of my family), and wouldn't mind seeing as well as purchasing a sequel to see what happens to young Finn, Nick, and Cassie! At 99 cents for the Kindle version, you get a lot of bang for your buck - now I'm off to go check out the rest of Lender's books! 5The REAL Wall Street; and the greatest "Dare to Be Great" Speech Ever Written.I bought this because I loved Lender's Trojan Horse. As a financial professional, I can tell you this is what Wall Street is really like. The language, the clothes, the banker's mannerisms, personalities, attitudes and the bruising competitiveness. And as Lender says in his description, ruthlessness. I always get disgusted when I read or see something that pretends to depict the financial world as a reality. Trust me, this is it.And it's a great read. Really gripping. And sometimes funny, touching, heartbreaking and dramatic. It includes a terrific story of the relationship between the kid (Finn) and the old man (Nick) and an erotic, moving and surprising romance. But one whole chapter (I won't say which, and no cheating and skipping forward) is the greatest Dare to be Great speech ever written. It's a term of art on Wall Street for the banker's pep talk to the client to get him/her to reach for greatness in the 11th hour of a deal. You have to get this book for this alone. 5Perfectly Enjoyable Financial ThrillerAfter enjoying Trojan Horse, I knew that I wanted to read more by David Lender. I was especially happy to see the Wall Street setting for this novel since there really seems to be a dearth of good financial thrillers in comparison with other genres. The Gravy Train reminded me of Grisham's The Firm in that both have smart, young protagonists freshly out of school and eager to make their marks in the world. Unfortunately, that world contains individuals whose questionable ethics seem the norm for certain organizations. The characterizations were wonderfully drawn and the plot was skillfully developed. Neither the characters nor the scenarios stretched the boundaries of believability.I see that Lender's next novel has a similar setting and I am eagerly looking forward to reading it since it is obvious that he knows the financial world. 5What more can I say but "GREAT"It's not surprising that each review of The Gravy Train is "FIVE STAR." I can't add anything greater than "great" to this review; my fellow readers have said it all. I read The Gravy Train and Trojan Horse in two days, and can't wait for Bull Street. Lender is one terrific writer and a storyteller comparible to John Grisham. If you are thinking about reading his books -- DO IT! They don't get any better than The Gravy Train.David Lender may have been a good Investment Banker, but he has found his calling as an author. Please keep writing -- we want MORE. 5Good choice for my first Wall Street NovellaI liked the story, I really liked all the WS market and economic stuff, it was kind of educational for me. The passion behind two of the characters seemed to me very appealing and, even though I would prefer another ending or going deeper on what the future could be for the characters, I finished reading the novella but I wanting even more of it. 4Review of the Gravy TrainThis was a good book, especially for those who have an understanding of investing and love intrigue. The characters were clearly defined and you grew to love or hate them very early in the story. The financial investment jargon could be a stumbling block for those unfamiliar with finance but the story line was clear and flowed nicely. And it is always good when the "good guys" topple the "bad guys" even if not in the way you would expect it to happen. The ending left a nice segue to a second book, or a continuation of the characters in another story. The only reason I did not rate it 5 stars is that it clearly had been spell-checked and not "edited". There were words throughout that simply made no sense to the text. This is a big problem for me as I briefly held a editing position with a publisher so always find these small mistakes. It doesn't take away from the wonderful story but appears a bit sloppy or lazy to me. 4
