Customer Reviews

PredictableThe book was ok,it just to predictable. Misspellings and grammatical errors interrupted the flow. Introduction of characters was somewhat erratic. 3Old styleWritten well, the old English language and slang used back then makes this story interesting and grabs your attention. Makes you think 5One StarNot about golf 1Not the best but not the worst readThis book was a mystery in the early 1900s era so there isn't a lot of forensic work used in it. It's basically a retired detective doing some sleuthing after a friend has met an untimely death which was first thought to be a suicide. Unlike the other review I could put this book down but did finish it. It was OK but if you like the mystery and murder type books with a lot of forensic information this is not the book for you. If this author writes mainly in this era it is doubtful that I would read another one of his books. 3Four StarsA little slow but when you are done, it was worth it. 4Three StarsGood mystery with lots of twists and turns. Great ending. 3Odd and DatedI enjoyed reading this book mostly because of its anachronisms. For example, the character Shag, a stereotypical Stepen Fetchit who is the detective's personal valet (and is often referred to as boy), a woman who suggests that she would have been a better person if her husband had beaten her regularly, an elitist country club set who are all secretly virtuous, and a swarthy Frenchman who is addicted to some kind of mysterious dope that renders him sometimes morose and at other times excitable. The heroine of the novel is prone to the vapors and faints easily. The main character is in the Holmes mold but far more elitist and less interesting. The plot is fairly simple and the mystery a bit trite, but the most odd thing was that it appeared to be written by someone (turns out it was written by a free lancer under a corporate pseudonym) who was trying to pretend to be British but the story is set in New Jersey. I didn't hate this book, I just found it odd and dated. 2Good Story, time line in the late20's early 30'sAn interesting golf related murder mystery that is set in the late 20's early 30's. 3Clever plot twistsStory is fun and paints a life of privileged and foolishly neieve characters mixed up with a detective of notable intellect and disguises. Language is dated and no doubt will offend most of today's readers... 4It was OK.Was an O K book for the price. 3
