Description

Maeve Kenny's life was going exactly as she'd planned. At 30 she was dating a soap opera star and had an exciting public relations career with an Irish-owned firm in Manhattan. Then three sudden events turned everything upside down, and Maeve found herself fleeing her Queens apartment for sanctuary back home upstate in Binghamton. As she tries to readjust to the dramatic changes in her life, Maeve says she needs a miracle to turn her life around. Who would have thought the whole world would be watching when it happens?

Customer Reviews

A Miraculous Adventure!Another full disclosure - I am Mary Pat's niece-in-law and friend. I would, however, enthusiastically recommend The Cyber Miracles whether or not I knew the author personally. The novel is just the sort of book I would be naturally drawn to if I saw it on display at a bookstore or library. The title sparks interest, combining the reality of the technology-driven world in which we live with the real need for spiritual guidance. As I begin to read the novel, I feel a connection with the main character, Maeve Kenny. Perhaps this connection is due to my age, faith, background, or the incredible period of transition I have been experiencing in my own life. More probably it is because Maeve is someone that any reader can relate to. Similarly, the other characters in the book reach out and grab you. They remind you of people you know, admire, love, and in some cases, just can't stand! The author sets these characters in a world of interesting environments, captivating stories, and nail-biting suspense, but still, a world that is very much our own. The Cyber Miracles is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to make some new friends, laugh out loud, and think deeply about the miracles that are just waiting to happen - in our own backyard. 5Great craic! This first novel is funny and wise--and bittersweet, at times. Maeve is Everywoman and, at the same time, a very specific protagonist on a very particular path. Follow her down it, and find all manner of surprises and delights. Highly recommended. 5Humor and romance round out the enjoyment of this storyI found it very hard to set this book aside once I got into it. I learned so much about the Irish culture and the characters were delightful. The story line was engrossing and kept moving right along. Humor and romance round out the enjoyment of this story, and make me anxious to go to the next in the series, "A Sudden Gift of Fate" Judy 5A Really Good ReadFirst: full disclosure. In days past author Mary Pat Hyland was my editor and is a friend. That said, if i wasn't genuinely impressed with her first published novel, i wouldn't gush in public, which is what i'm about to do now. To me, there's one hallmark of good writing: Do i care about the characters? I hated to see this book end, because i wanted to know how the rest of their lives unfold (i've heard murmurs about a sequel, and i may start circulating a petition to encourage MP to write one ...)The plot is compelling enough to have kept me up half the night reading, and between the words are whispers of faith that will resonate with many, particularly (but by no means exclusively) Roman Catholics. MP also slides in her fluency with Gaelic -- which i understand to be about as easy to learn as Sanskrit -- which flavors the whole book with a distinctly Irish twist. (Not too suprisingly, the book is already finding an audience in Ireland, as well as a growing one here.) All of Cyber Miracles' elements combine to create an intelligently written, engagingly human novel that will appeal to readers from Gens X and Y to Baby Boomers and beyond! 5Delightfully EntertainingThe Mauve Kenny three book series is delightfully entertaining. With characters, including strong, smart successful women, whom you love and support, the stories are set in upstate New York on the Finger Lakes. The author writes with a solid foundation of Catholicism and immerses us into the Irish culture with her liberal use of Irish dialect. So jump in, the Finger Lakes water is a perfect temperature. 4DisappointingAfter reading the other reviews, I had high hopes for this book. Now that I've read it myself, the only way I can describe it is disappointing. I found the plot boring and unrealistic, the characters underdeveloped, and the writing average. Particularly, I found the main character, Maeve, unlikable; I didn't understand her motives behind the things she did and said.In general, the author attempted to take the plot in too many different directions. The result is that Maeve's relationship with her father isn't explored enough, and her grief over her mother's death is glossed over. The premise of the book, the "cyber miracles," is confusing. Maeve and Andy come under fire because the website they create is a "hoax" - but why is that newsworthy? The site simply features a webcam aimed at a statue. It never claims to be magic or have healing powers, so where does the hoax come in? The author never explains why the entire nation is outraged. This is the first time I've read a Kindle book and sincerely considered requesting my money back. It wasn't awful, but, based on the great reviews it had received at the time that I purchased, I just expected better. Many of the reviewers were honest and admitted that they personally know the author, but they then made claims along the lines of "even if I didn't know her, I would still think this book is great." After reading, I find that hard to believe. I've never left a review for a book; I'm doing so now because someone needs to balance the many biased reviews already posted. 2Feckin' Fun!Get your hopes up! That's the message of The Cyber Miracles and its charming heroine, Maeve Kenny, who turns her public crisis into personal redemption (though not without obstacles and embarrassments along the way). Who ISN'T looking for a miracle? Ultimately, author Mary Pat Hyland reassures us that our prayers will be answered, though not necessarily in the way we'd hoped. (Or as the Rolling Stones put it: You can't always get what you want, but you just might find you get what you need.) Maeve and friends also prove to be the perfect tour guides to the Southern Tier of New York State and the folkways of Irish-Americans. Failte! So after you stop off for a spiedie and grab a Guinness, savor The Cyber Miracles! 5Highly Recommended! The setting, the authentic Irish American characters, the angels working through seeming coincidences, the Gaelic made this book very interesting! My cousins and aunts joined me in reading the trilogy and we all enjoyed the series! 5A Must Read! The Cyber Miracles is a book I truly enjoyed reading from beginning to end.I would defintely say if you are wondering if you should purchase this book. By all means I give you a YES! Mary Pat Hyland is a gifted writer who really knows how to keep you reading. I would say, this is a MUST READ. You won't be sorry you bought it. It's a good book. 5Definitely make a Movie of it, And a Sequel!Full Disclosure here too, I'm a friend of Mary Pat's :-DI just finished the book and I loved it! Congrats, Mary Pat! Yes, definitely a sequel! I want to see the further adventures of Maeve and Andy-and see if Ciaran wants Maeve back! (you got to have a triangle, you know, and Andy better win!)Now, for a movie cast... Here are my choices for a dream team!Amy Adams as MaeveJames McAvoy as AndyColm Meany as Martin KennyImelda Staunton as EileenJennifer Connely as BridgeenJoseph Gordon-Levitt as FergalCillian Murphy as CiaranEwan MacGregor as Father MikeSamantha Harris as Toni SellarsNoni Smith as Chelsea (local legendary Binghamton actress)Eva Longoria Parker as ArabellaJessica Simpson as PescaYoko Ono as the Tai Chi instructor(And I'll be happy to be a go-fer on the set! hee hee!) 5
