Customer Reviews

Not Heinlein, but not bad.Just in case anyone hasn't read the other reviews, this story is NOT written by Heinlein, nor did he contribute in any way. It's a fun if slightly clunky read; as sci-fi it doesn't really make you think about the reality it depicts, which leaves you kind of unsatisfied at the end, like having potato chips for dinner. As a detective story it ain't Agatha Christie but the contrivance is subtle enough that the resolution isn't obvious. But it has a good beat and it's good to dance to. I give it an 85. 4Knave is no pawnNice book. Knave has to figure out why he was hired as well as solve the who-dun-it. I haven't read this author before but I will look for more of this detective. 4The Counterfeit HeinleinI must agree with Liz's review. Robert A. Heinlein might have enjoyed seeing his name and legacy bantered about in this novel, but this book had nothing to do about Heinlein except the use his name as a "hook" to catch unsuspecting fish (like me).Once again I'm reminded that you can't judge a book by it's cover and in this instance by it's title as well. 1Great ReadVery interesting read. An interesting coincidence was that the last thing I read before this was a Heinlein story (The Year of the Jackpot) that I had never run into before. YEAH, KINDLE!!! 5What you expected...It reads a bit like one of the Master's late Juveniles. I wanted it to go on for a couple of chapters. 4Not Variable StarThank goodness. I didn't like VS, too left-wingy and mushy-warm, but this piece wasn't at all politically slanted, just some fair-stick writing about a few odd races that humanity has contacted in the future and with a theft of a forged Heinlein and a murder thrown in. Some of the solution is hinted at too openly at times, but I enjoy who'd units, even if the sci-fi kind. 4Well worth it!I'm unable to add much to the critical discussion already presented.Speaking personally, as a 61-year-old reader who has been a dedicated sf fan since I "discovered" Heinlein's juveniles fifty years ago, I found Janifer's little story well worth the cost (I acquired it as an e-book) and the reading time.I especially enjoyed the verisimilitude engendered by the various fragments and echoes of quite a few classic sf stories, many of which made me smile. Gerald Knave sounds more than anything rather like a future-history Archie Goodwin or Archy McNally . . . 5Locked Room Mystery Wit A TwistThis is basically a detective story with flying aliens set on a sort of university world. The theft of a phony Heinlien manuscript is a nice grabber for a SF fan and it worked for me. The story didn't need it, but it was fun just the same. Although it was not central to the story the work around for the locked room was a bit of a gimmick. Guess I was just expecting somthing a bit more clever. All in all worth the price of admission. I recommend it. 4Not really that Heinleinish, but great fun. This is more of a Stainless Steel Rat kinda story. A Who dunit and locked room mystery with a bunch of assorted silliness. A Humorous tale well told. But a bit "Clue-ish" in that it could have been Colonel Mustard with the candle without much effort. The mystery isn't one for mystery nuts but more for sci-fi humor fans. 4A Past HistoryThe Counterfeit Heinlein (2001) is the third SF novel in the Gerald Knave series, following Knave in Hand. The initial volume in this sequence is Survivor. In the previous volume, the crown Jewels -- really fish -- of the Tocks had been stolen. The Tocks were willing to wait until the person who took them realized his mistake. The human colonists on Haven IV were more excitable. The colonists on Haven IV summoned Knave to solve the mystery. When he got off his ship, he was met by three people. They wanted to tell him about the problem, but he insisted on setting the fee and establishing the rules.Gorgial argued with him, but Knave asked if she wanted to solve the problem. Benson agreed with Knave. Pollorine mentioned a reward and Knave negated that idea.He was told that the Crown Jewels on the Tocks were a special king of fish. They lived for centuries and glowed on occasion. They were lifted from under the noses of two Tocks. While the diplomats were briefing Knave, another man entered the terminal and announced that General Tal had been assassinated. They were driven to the Embassy in an official car. Chan briefed him on the way, with some remarks by Gorgial. In this novel, Gerald Knave is a Survivor. Jerry stays on planets for a standard year, solving problems and taking notes. Occasionally he is hired to solve other problems. The Master is a Consultant for just about anything. He has known Knave since his recruitment as a Survivor.Robbin Tress is a thirty-two year old native of Cub IV. She was badly treated as a child because of her strange Talent. She knows things that no one else knows.Detective-Major Hyman Gross is the head of the Detective Squad in Two. He had also investigated the previous shootings three Berigots.Ping Boom is the head of the co-chief librarian of the Manuscript Division of the First Files Building. He hs a job for Knave.Charles Hutson Bellemand MacDougal is a physicist on Ravenal. Mac has won two Nobel awards and is considered a genius.B'russ'r B'dige is a Berigot. He looks somewhat like a very large flying squirrel.Norman W. Nechs was a survivalist. He died in his shelter during the Clean Sweep War.Tabitha Bowyer hsa a Doctorate in Archaeology. Bitsy is a member of the Misfits, the Ravenal science fiction club. She headed the dig of the Nechs shelter in Utah.Dean Rell was on the dig with Bitsy. He is also a member of the Misfits.Ramsay Leake is a rich cyberneticist. He lived on the tenth floor of a highrise building. In this story, somebody took a shot at Knave, destroying a tea cup in his hand. Jerry stayed on the floor facedown for then minutes. The house robots cleaned up around him.The next morning, Ping caller to offer him a job. Someone had stolen a copy of a Heinlein story that he had claimed to never write. It had been discovered among items brought back from a dig into Norman's shelter in Uta.The Ravenal Scholarte had checked the carbon-14 isotopes to determine it was from the right time period. After the testing, it had been added to the collection in the First Files building. Later, Mac had paid for a full examination of the isotopes and it proved to be deficient. The copy was declared to be a counterfeit. The police had investigated the theft and had not found the thieves. They didn't have a clue about the theft. Besides, who would want to steal a false copy of a nonexistent story.Knave wants to see the scene of the crime. B'russ'r shows him around the room and describes the circumstances. Then Knave talks to Mac about the extended examination of the work.Mac takes Knave to a meeting of the Misfits. Two of the archaeologists at the dig are members of the club. Knave questions Bitsy and Dean about the dig.He learns the location of the site and the items retrieved. He also finds out that the books were placed in a sealed drum filled with nitrogen and argon. Later, Knave talks to the rest of the dig team.Somebody shoots at Knave again. Then he is summoned to another shooting incident. Someone has shot Ramsay on his balcony and he had fallen to his death.Meanwhile, Knave coordinates with the police. Gross was in charge of the theft of the counterfeit manuscript. He had also investigated the shooting of three Berigots who worked at the library five years ago. This tale doesn't make sense to Knave. The Master doesn't think so either. Robbin says that the leader is someone known to Knave. Jerry makes a list of everyone he has talked with on Ravenal.Knave also remembers something important about the case. The next installment in this sequence is The Alienist.Highly recommended for Janifer fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of mysterious thefts, senseless murders, and a bit of advanced technology. Read and enjoy!-Arthur W. Jordin 5
