Description

Now a Major Motion Picture starring Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear, and Blythe Danner.

“Sinister and complex.... You’ll race right through it.”—New York Times

After a mysterious fall from his New York City apartment, Philip Chase has moved back home with his mother, Charlene, a bitter woman who has never fully accepted the death of her younger son, Ronnie, five years earlier. Surrounded by memories of the family he no longer has, and trying to forget the reasons he left New York, Philip is in stasis.

But everything changes late one windy February night when Ronnie's high school girlfriend shows up on their doorstep. A sad young woman who still bears the scars of the accident that took Ronnie's life, Melissa is nine months pregnant. The father, she claims, is Ronnie.

Now Philip and his mother must confront not only Melissa's past but also their own: the secrets each has buried and the lies each has told. But not everyone wants the past exposed…. At once a moving story of redemption and a heart-stopping work of suspense, Strange but True “will hold you transfixed” (Salon.com).

Customer Reviews

CaptivatingThis book was very interesting and made me wonder how it would end. I did like the ending. I would like to read more books by John Searles. 5PhenomenalAlthough the rather dark themes of this book are not my typical first choice for reading, John Searles had me addicted halfway through the first chapter. His characters and their interactions are intensely real, and in each, the reader can find characteristics we can relate to. Like Mr. Searles and the family and girlfriend who lost Ronnie so unexpectedly, my own family has suffered a similar loss. The reactions to that loss and its ripple- effect are beautifully and accurately portayed in this novel. There is also humor here, and - I hate to use such a hackneyed term but there is no other - real redemption and hope, as well as a self-awareness that is awakened in many of the main characters. Add to that the delightful gasps of surprise as the mystery/thriller aspect of the book smacks you upside the head when you least expect it, and this story is one of my top five of the year. READ IT. 5Not a good readNot a good read. So much unneeded and irrelevant detail in the story, I skipped at least half the book. The character building left a lot to be desired. What little relevant content that was there was decent at best. I almost stopped reading it but saw it through in Hope's of a good ending. Regret that now. The ending is terrible and needed a lot more development. 2Ending needs workThis is a sad but riveting book. The ending, however, leaves too many questions unanswered. I still enjoyed it though. 4Warning! This will grab you and you will not be able to put it down!Just came off of another 'famous' author's book, which was just horrible- couldn't even bring myself to finish it- run-on sentences, repetitive, weird interjections out of nowhere, just a painful read. My first and last of his. This John Searles book made up for that other bad read, and then some! Wow! This author writes with beautiful, descriptive (not overly verbose or boring) prose and I found myself totally lost in his writing- as though I was there.Am ordering another of his books. Looking forward to being captivated again. Thank you, John Searles! 5Did my book miss a last chapter?I enjoyed the book very much up until the very end. I felt that there were so many questions not answered. Did Gail survive? What happened to Bill? What the heck did they name the sweet baby? Did Phillip move back to New York? How did his relationship end up with both of his parents? 3Dark but intriguingI didn't love it as much as Help for the Haunted, but I couldn't put it down either. I had to know how it would all come out. The story is very dark and a secondary reason I had to keep reading was with the hope that there would be some light in the depressing lives of the characters. Virtually everyone- even relatively minor characters- is suffering a loss. There was a faint glimmer of light that kept me hopeful and the conclusion was satisfying. 4An Unexpected DelightBrief Description: Philip Chase has moved back home with his mother Charlene after suffering a fall from his New York apartment. Charlene, who never really recovered from the death of her youngest son Ronnie five years earlier, has turned into a bitter overeater--filled with anger at Ronnie's death and her divorce from her husband Richard (who is now remarried). When Ronnie's old girlfriend, Melissa Moody, shows up unexpectedly and tells Philip and Charlene that she is pregnant and she thinks Ronnie is the father, it sets into motion a series of events that take us into the past and into a rather strange and unexpected present. My Thoughts: I didn't really expect much from this book (which I picked up for the Take A Chance challenge) and was pleasantly surprised to find it to be an engrossing and affecting read that surprised me midway with a major U-turn that was unexpected but thrilling. I know the plot might sound a bit weird/paranormalish, but the book is fully grounded in reality and deals more with lost souls and desperate, lonely people than with the paranormal. As I got to know Philip, Charlene and Melissa, I wanted all of them to find the happy ending that they deserved. I was surprised how much I got involved in their stories, and Searles does a wonderful job of developing these characters so that they feel real and lived-in. And, as I mentioned, the book takes a rather strange turn in the middle, which I found both shocking but oddly pleasing in its weirdness. If you're looking for a different read that will both surprise you and affect you emotionally, try this book. It was an unexpected delight. 4A thrilling rideThis is a hard book to describe without spoiling stuff. Suffice it say that Strange But True starts off as a melancholy examination of grief and slowly builds into a page-turning thriller. It is a gripping read. 4Couldn't put this book downI don't know what I expected when I started this book, but it was a page-turner! The story itself is woven together a bit differently, in that you see the focus on each different character in each chapter and there is a lot of going backward and forward, which I usually do not like, but as I mentioned, the story is so intriguing you definitely want to stay with it. You see each character through someone else's eyes, as well as their own. While you may think someone is not very likeable to begin with, by the time all the layers of their personality and experiences are discovered, you find yourself really liking them. There's the mother, holding herself together with food binges and bitterness, and her son who is so lonely and hurt that he can't reach out to another person. The father seems despicable, but you even see him redeemed in many ways and I ended up liking him, as well. I just can't say enough good things about this book. Yes, it's a bit odd at times, but it's also laugh out loud funny in a couple of places and really makes you think. Highly recommend. 5
