Customer Reviews

Drivers? Not included for Mac, but they're out there if you don't mind a haystack. Obligated to leave a review here - there is absolutely no driver on the StarTech support site, and what I received says it is windows compatible only. This is NOT actually the case. If you look at the chipset, there are multiple products around that are the same chipset and Mac compatible, so you just need one of those drivers. The SIIG page has drivers for various Mac OS X versions, including 10.11.1. I'm not sure Amazon will take a link, so basically you need to go to the SIIG website and look for their JU-DV0211-S1 drivers, or just buy that product instead. The chipset on this particular product is the Trigger 2 T2-285A chipset from Magic Control Technology corp and you can also go to their website and look for the latest drivers for their UV-A8301 product. The magic word is this is the "Trigger 2" driver that you need. When the rest of the reviews say you'll need to hunt it down, better believe it! Installation and restart required, and you'll have to bypass the driver security in 10.11 by turning it off under system preferences / security. 4Works great on Window 10 This is working great for me on my Lenovo laptop that I upgraded to Windows 10. One of the reasons I chose it was that I use an unusual screen resolution - 1366 X 768 - and this external graphics adopter supports it. Note that not all graphics adopters support all resolutions, so whichever one you buy be sure it supports the resolution you want. I'm using it for a 2nd external monitor - my laptop supports the 1st one directly. This adopter does require that you install a driver (some don't) and I followed the suggestion in the instructions to download the latest one from their website rather than using the driver on the provided CD.One thing with Windows 10 is that sometimes you have to reboot your computer twice after installing drivers (or Windows updates) to get everything to sync up and work right. This is an issues with Windows, not this adopter. Also after taking my laptop on the road, sometimes I have to reboot it twice after getting home and hooking the adopter up once more - again this is a Windows issue.Definitely recommended. 5This is the best device ever for adding a second "completely independent" display ... This is the best device ever for adding a second "completely independent" display to a desktop system. I am using a Dell Desktop with Windows 10 and the software immediately recognized the external video card. Within 1 minute of inserting the CD into the drive, the software recognized the second monitor. This is not just a monitor extender, it allows two completely different windows to be run on the two monitors and the displays can be minimized and dropped onto and moved to each monitor easily. Exactly what I needed!!!!! 5Works Well EXCEPT for Pointer Issues on a Dell Monitor (HP Slimline PC, Windows 10 Home) Just got the USB 2.0 version, works well except when I use a Dell E2211Hc flat screen LCD as the 2nd monitor, the pointer only shows up upon a "restart"....in other words, if you log out (as either an Admin or other user) and then log back in, then the pointer no longer shows up on the 2nd screen.....once you restart again, then it will show back up and work right.EDIT 6-2-17: When I switched to an older Samsung SyncMaster 171s flat screen LCD monitor for the 2nd screen, the pointer problem mentioned above goes away. I am thinking about getting a new ASUS monitor and trying that since the SyncMaster is basically square and not wide-screen.I searched and found the following possible solution for the pointer issues with the Dell Monitor (but it did NOT help or improve anything):a. Remove the check from the Display Pointer Trails box.b. Remove the check from the Enhance Pointer Precision box.c. Click "Apply".PC is a HP Pavilion Slimline S5220Y running Windows 10 Home........also I did get the latest driver off the Startech website and I was logged in as the Administrator for the driver install (before plugging in the Startech).Edit 7-24-17: Well, I did not get a new monitor, ended up returning this StarTech - it was just too finicky and not reliable for my Windows 10 Home. Ended up getting a Plugable USB 2.0.Thanks. 3product worked fine when i first got it ive had this product about 8 months now. probably 50% of the time i had to reload the drivers after having my laptop with me a few days in a row. this last time was the straw that broke the camels back. now it has a large square on my extended monitor upon boot up. i then have to restart my machine and it goes away. ive reseated and reseated all the connections numerous times. what a pain. ive ordered a different product from a different manufacturer.now my letters are not clear (blurry, shadows), ive tried multiple monitors (same effect). running win 10 on a i7 processor with 20 gig mem. a synchmaster monitor capable of 1920 graphics. product worked fine when i first got it. just doesnt last for the money. if you notice you cannot screw in the monitor to the adapter (for stability) 1Several working great so far I work in a small office setting with about 10 users at any given time. We are converting everyone over to dual monitors, and have been using this adapter quite well for 3 different users so far. I recently ordered another 3 to get everyone else that needs it up to date.Circumstances: I have 3 up and running at 1280x1024 on both XP and W7 (professional x64) with no issues.Pro's:Install is easy, the driver works well without problems.Setup is as simple as it is with an on-board graphics card. No need to do anything special here.Small and simple to hook up to each computer.Con's:Driver download speed from Startech is absolutely excruciatingly slow. If you're doing multiple installs download one copy and put it on a thumb drive.Pulls a good amount of power from the USB port, though it hasn't been problematic yet.Occasionally lags or stutters a bit. I use it mostly for email so it's not a huge issue, but it is noticeable when moving windows around.Overall:I will continue to purchase these for our future conversions until I find something better. The price is better than most other adapters, and the functionality is enough to get by. I wouldn't use it for video or gaming, but for email and spreadsheets it is more than enough. 4Continually Crashed Application This device works, however, it would consistently crash with the application I was running after running the application ran for an hour or more. There was an error message relative to the device driver, which meant nothing to me. I was using this to drive two other monitors separate from the main monitor. The Dell monitors I was using would not detect the specific resolution from the main graphics card, so hence the need for something that would drive the two external monitors and have the Dells work, which they did. I finally had to retire this device as unusable and resort to installing an internal graphics card, which I did and the application and the monitors work without fail. For most normal applications this device would probably work fine. My application was a two hour video presentation, hosted from a visual basic program running an embedded Windows Media Player on Windows 7, that consisted of intensive graphics. I didn't return the product, but I would not recommend buying this if your videos have intensive graphics working through WMP. 3Great solution for dual monitor set up in an office environment... First, before you buy, make sure that your current computer does not already support dual monitors. If you have a display port (DP) it might support dual monitor connections and all you have to do is get an adapter. Also, if you have both a VGA port and a DP port, your computer definitely supports dual monitors and you do not need to purchase this device. The same goes if you have a graphics card that has something like a VGA port and a DVI port. So check your computer first to determine that there is no other way to connect a second monitor before you buy this. You should know that this is a graphics card that connects on a USB port and capabilities are limited even compared to on-board graphics cards found embedded in a computer's mainboard. Over the past couple of years I purchased a few of these for work because our employees keep asking for a dual monitor setup. It works well for things like spreadsheets and documents but if you are looking for a second monitor to play games on, this will not be for you. Finally, note that this will work with Windows 10 but previous versions of this device from Star Tech that I purchased for Windows 7 do not work with Windows 10 and Star Tech does not offer drivers for them. Hopefully, this being USB 3.0 will be supported by future versions of operating systems and Star Tech will produce drivers for them. This is not a plug and play device so before you connect it to your USB port, make sure you download the latest drivers for it from startech.com and install them. Then plug it in. 5Great Product! This is exactly what I was looking for. I needed something that would convert my USB port on my Mac to a second video out for a stage display using ProPresenter 6 and this works great! I was quite sceptical about it at first. It comes with a DVD with Windows drivers on it but after some research I found the driver that works for Mac.I would give it five stars if I didn't have to go hunt for the right driver and then download several to see which would work. 4Driver Does Not Work with Latest Windows 10 Version (Creators Update) I've tried this adapter on two PCs, both running the latest version of Windows 10. In both cases, Windows disabled the driver because it had problems. I used the latest driver from StarTech's Web site. I installed it per directions on their Web site. I tried a second time on each machine installing it in Windows compatibility mode. I tried removing the driver and using the driver that Windows supplied. One of the PCs was a Lenovo laptop. The other was an Asus desktop. It's going back to Amazon. 1
