Customer Reviews

The speed is great on this card reader I ended up purchasing not one, not two but three of this model card reader....and NOT because they were good. Just the opposite. Each and every CF reader broke within weeks or a month at the longest and every time while I was on assignment and HAD to down load photos to my MacBook Pro Retina in order to keep shooting my cameras for the assignments for NBC News/Sports, ESPN, National Geographic and several other magazines. Each time the internal prongs on the CF card reader bent or broke making it impossible to make a connection with the memory card. Fortunately I was surrounded by other networks and photojournalists and was able to borrow their card readers.I kept replacing the readers with the same model thinking it was a fluke of POOR workmanship. No.Finally I purchased a superior reader that reads everything with the exception of the new C-Fast cards. The CF reader (in particular) is made in a way that the cards are well guided and supported on loading well BEFORE they get to the pins that make the connections, thereby making it all but impossible to have a failure. After the second purchase and especially after the 3rd failure of the EXACT same problem I contacted the company through Amazon and was told: "These things happen and you just have to replace the item..."I urge you, if your a hobbyist or especially a professional who counts on a card reader for your job, DO NOT waste your money, time or hopes on what has truly proven to be a poorly designed and even a poorer made card reader when it comes to the CF slot. I also caution you that should you EVER try to seek help or even understanding from this company forget it....much less and apology or an offer of a replacement *Note: even were they to offer a replacement you are still getting a product that "MAY" work 1-3 times before destruction, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS "StarTech USB 3.0 Muti Media Flash Memory Card Reader! It is fast while it lasts but it just does not last and therein lies the problem. 1Maybe magic mighty mite Quite the little gadget for being so small. It does what it says it willl do and maybe more. I'm too old to figure out what all them strings of letters in the product description are. With this, I just stick the card into the slot and plug this into a USB port. No incantations or magic wands. But just like magic, there are the pictures on my computer screen. The camera instructions tried to steer me to larger and more expensive readers. Glad I found this. Thanks Amazon ..... and the south Asian person who assembled it. 5my entire computer becomes super sluggish and drives me insane because I can't revive ... It does the job, but only for a straight copy from the card to the folder in Finder. As soon as I try using Lightroom or Bridge, which is what I have always done with my previous card readers, everything slows down, my entire computer becomes super sluggish and drives me insane because I can't revive it until I stop the transfer and restart my computer. Through many tests I can confidently say that this card reader is the reason of that issue. 2Insane Speed + Incredible Value for what you get! I purchased the USC-C version of this dual-slot SD card reader and couldn't be happier!I was originally looking to get the Lexar Workflow Hub + 2 SD card readers, but the Hub alone is $57.49, and then you need to buy the extra 2 SDXC card readers toplug into the hub... that's $97.47 to get 2 SD readers in one hub...This is FAR more affordable and I got around 250Mb/s reading from my UHS-II SDXC cards!!!That's FASSSSST!!!!The best part is BOTH cards can be read/written simultaneously, or even copied and pasted from one card to the other! It's fantastic!!!!And since this one is USB-C it fits right into my new Mac Book Pro 15" with Touchbar!!!Thank you StarTech!!!! 5Card Reader Ejects Unexpectedly and Repeatedly When this reader is communicating with my Macbook Pro (15-inch, 2016) it seems to work well. However, it is constantly ejecting for no particular reason and immediately reconnects on its own. I turned off the option in my Macbook setting to attempt to put drives to sleep. So, I don't think my Macbook is taking some action that "turns off" the reader. The ejections happen after roughly every 3-10 minutes of use and this repeats the entire time I am using the reader. I have an older USB 2.0 reader that I can use with a USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 adapter and it does not behave this way on my Macbook. I use the reader to retrieve and edit photos taken on my camera and saved to my compact flash cards. I have reached out to StarTech technical support to see if they can propose a solution. In the meantime, I have to revert back to my slower USB 2.0 reader for fear that the constant unexpected ejections will end up corrupting a file, several files, or perhaps the whole compact flash card... ruining my photo images. As it is now, I cannot trust using this reader when dealing with files of any importance. 2Works awesome and it's bootable unlike others. I was looking for a card reader which can be used as bootable device similar to a usb pen drive. As this one is plug and play, it is detected during the boot time.I was able to boot using a microSD card with this device, without any issues at all. This device adds 2 bootable options one for MicroSD/HC and SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC cards and other for MS/MSXC cards.Very happy with the read/write performance as well as this supports USB 3.0I no longer have to buy a USB pen drive..I find it's better to buy multiple microSD cards if needed as they can be used in most other devices. 5The built in cable is short, but the device works great. I bought this as a way to give myself a reachable SD card slot for an iMac, which has a ridiculous placement of the SD slot on the BACK of the display. In this case the cable on the SD card reader is just a bit too short and the device dangles off the back of the computer, which will eventually hurt the USB port. So you need USB slots nearby -- that said, on a laptop, the cable is the perfect length. I would've preferred that this device not have an inbuilt cable, but instead a usb port and a provided cable, but would allow me to use my own cable of the right length. 4Lightweight and Compact but Leaves you wanting more The StarTech.com dual-Slot SD Card reader can be a great addition to any photographer or videographer who is looking for a card reader that can enable them to transfer files and other media quickly to their laptop while on the go or even their desktop at home or in the office. Its lightweight and compact form factor coupled with a built in USB connection make it an easy choice for anyone to add to their cart for checkout. Furthermore, this card reader also features the latest technology which allows users to transfer files at high speed rates with USB 3.0 or USB-C, coupled with an SD card that's rated as UHS-II compatible. However, don't let all of these pro details distract you from some of the minor cons that the card reader has which a user can only find after using it for many months, just as I have. A few disappointments I've found with the card reader are it's lack of an indicator light and it's lack of other card slots:1. An indicator light would be a nice upgrade to the second generation model of this card reader so that it lets users to know if it's powered on after it's been plugged in. Even better would be two indicator lights that would differentiate between slot 1 and slot 2, so that users would know which card was being read from and is currently transferring files. There have been many times when I wasn't sure which slot I could remove the card that I wasn't using.2. It would actually be amazing if StarTech just made a multi-card reader with 2 SD Card Slots, a microSDHC/microSDXC slot, and one CF Card slot. For the price of this card reader, you would think that it could actually be a fully functioning multicard reader, but it's not. There have been times when I needed more than an SD card reader for other card types and really wished that this card reader was the one to help solve all my issues. In conclusion, it's a great card reader and is probably the only dual SD card reader out there on the market. However, for the price tag, it would be great if there were a few more features that this card reader gave its buyers. I currently use it a lot since I photograph with DSLR's that have dual SD card slots, but there have been times when I needed a microSD card slot reader or a CF card reader and that's when I had to use my other card reader. 4Great card fit and transfer performance I've had a bunch of similar readers over the years. As a rule, they work as advertised and are a good value. Really nothing to write about...This reader, though, has the best CF card slot I've seen -- short of one that's part of an expensive piece of pro-audio gear. The tolerances are spot-on; there's no question about whether the card is inserted the right way (a problem with some readers that set a very short connector slightly back of the front panel), and the slot is deep enough to ensure precise alignment. The only problem I noted, mechanically, is that there is the *tiniest* bit of roughness on the long edges of the aluminum trim panel around the card cutouts. WIth the close tolerances, this can cause an inserted card to be scratched. I took down the rough edges with a couple swipes of the edge of a steel blade (being careful to do so with the face of the unit pointing *down* to keep metal filings out of the innards) and then polishing away any remaining burrs with a bit of fine-grain emery cloth. The fact that this reader connects via USB 3.0 (over a USB-C connector) means it's *fast*. That really makes a difference for moving big WAV files from studio to computer. 4So far so good I am a DIT for the TV/Film industry. Part of my job is to download memory cards from digital cameras and I download a lot of them. I have burned through about 5 multi card readers in the past few years. They all seem to be very poorly constructed and use the small USB 3.0 B type plug which breaks easily.I have only had this reader for a few months so I can't speak to it's long term reliability but so far so good. It seems to have a very solid construction (more than most). It also has the larger USB 3.0 B type plug that is way way more solid and less likely to break. 4
