Customer Reviews

Iffy Starrett seems to have two quality levels of products, almost like two completely different companies. This straight edge is not from the better one.It is not usable as a straight edge (off by .020 inches) and is somewhat delicate. Not sure why I bought it. 3It is now good to go For the money you cannot beat this scale / straight edge. However, the scale was not calibrated properly. The printed graduations were right on. From one edge (the one with the hanging hole) the accuracy was also right on. If you check from the other end, the scale was approximately 1/32 two long. Since it was long, I was able to sand the scale down on my belt/disc sander using a miter gage to insure squareness. It is now good to go. Had it been two short, I would not have been able to correct the problem. I have several Starret products that I used as my control for measurement. All in all, I would buy this product again. But a word to Starret, you should fix this. The Starret name is associated with quality just not this time. 3Incredible Value At the time of this writing, this product is $5.25. I use it as a straight edge to set up an industrial planer. The thickness is apps. 1/10 of an inch, so it is thin, yet sturdy. Very nice printing of numbers and measurements. As it is aluminum, I can set the outfeed fences of the planer, and rub them agains the HSS knives, without dulling or nicking the knife. In short, it was exactly what I was looking for and at a very good price, and from a quality manufacturer. 5May need some tweaking, but otherwise pretty good Granted, it's not the quality of a Starrett square, but it's not advertised to be. I bought three of these: 24, 36, and 48 inch. I tested them against a Starrett double square for accuracy. The 36 and 48-inch were very close (the lines on the rulers and the square lined up). The 24-inch square was about a 64th long. I used a disk sander to fix that in a couple of minutes. The lines and numbers are only slightly etched into the metal, and time will tell how durable they are. For the money, though, I suppose I can afford to replace them. I set them on my table saw top to check how straight they are, and they seem to be adequately straight for my purposes.I got these because none of my tape measures were accurate enough with inside measurements, particularly when I use an Incra miter gauge with the stop. I think these will work well for that. 5Not worth $5 I bought this one because of the name, but this is definitely not Starrett quality. One edge came with a 1/8" gouge in it, making it unusable as a straight edge. Cheap and flimsy. Would be good if you needed neither straight or accurate. 1Not Starrett Quality. Cheap. Will not buy again. Maybe this is China Starrett. I guess it is a ruler but it is not flat after I had to remove the product label off the back with a little heat. The label was ridiculously hard to remove. Acetone would not remove it so I used a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive in an attempt to remove it. Got it off after 10 minutes. Now it's not flat. So I guess that's my fault. Will not buy again. 2Good enough for basic tasks Nice crafts ruler. Not machinist quality, but handy in a woodshop for quick layout work or for general crafts. It's basically an anodized aluminum bar with printed on lines and numbers. Mine was not etched in as I would have wished so I knocked of a star for that. For the few bucks I paid for it, it's a good deal as long as you keep in mind that it's NOT a fine quality Starret measuring device, it's more in line with a nice quality wooden yard stick. I've already used mine with C-clamps as a quick router fence and to clear a clog in my dust collector system. I might buy it again in the future if the price is right as it's an all around handy guy. 4OK as straight edge but not as ruler. This is OK for several uses. I compared this to several other rulers. As a straight it was good but as a ruler it was not very accurate. There were several dings on the corners. After filing off the dings, it looked good as a straight edge. I used a granite block and the cast iron top of my table saw and could not see any light under this straight edge, I have other stainless steel rulers that showed definite light when set against these references.I compared the ruler markings against several other rulers. I did not compare from the end of this ruler because of the dings on the ends. Instead I compared from the 1" mark to the 19" mark. Over 18", this ruler was off by about 1/32". The other rulers that I have agreed perfectly. 3Sturdy and reliable I use this ruler for pastry making ... Sturdy and reliableI use this ruler for pastry making when I need to roll out my dough to certain sizes. It's easy to clean. The markings are actually etched into the ruler, so if I have flour everywhere, I can still see the marks. It also lies flat on the surface and doesn't curve off of the plane like a lot of rulers do.I only wish that it also had the metric system on one side. 4Good cheap straight-edge. I use this mostly to quickly tear rag-paper prints from my E-width plotter. I mostly print C-size, so there's always some side waste, and I can easily tear that away using this ruler. Don't try that with copier paper though, this aluminum ruler just isn't stiff enough, or maybe the edge isn't sharp enough for that.As a straight-edge, it's OK. There is enough stiffness and surface area that it stays put well enough to draw the occasional line. The numbers are well printed. This is a pretty good value for a 24" ruler. I should have bought two. 5
