Customer Reviews

Outstanding! I work at a small AM news/talk radio station in a very rural area of the Southern U.S. We are the only radio station for for many miles. As a result, I have redundancies to stay on the air in TEOTWAWKI/SHTF situations. As part of our overall comms plan, we have 2, 10, 12m & 70cm capability as well as 11m CB bands. I mounted this antenna with the ground plane kit atop a 115' guyed tower (90 feet above the tree line and a wide open space below.) I used the super thick low loss RF cable for the 115' run up the tower down to a 6ft LMR 400 jumper from the entry point to lightening arrestor and a 15' run of LMR 400 from the arrestor to a RCI 2970N2 radio for our 10 meter, SSB & CB coverage. Wow! At 40 watts, I can talk ALL OVER the U.S. At 200 watts, the world! This antenna rocks and worth every cent. 5Love it - Quality control still needed on the ground plane Once assembly was completed, installation was easy and the SWR for CB was 1.1 to 1.2 to 1. very pleased with the performance and SWR. The ground plane ring need major attention as well as the radials. They do not screw together without a lot of work. I read the previous reviews and was ready for the issue. This is something quality control needs to fix. I think the antenna is a great one. The ground plane head ache was unnecessary. I gave an overall 5 because it was here on time and the performance was what I was looking for. Ease to assemble was a three. Hopefully someone is reading these reviews and taking action at the factory. 5Excellent Antenna I wanted a CB base antenna that was going to work. I found one with the Solarcon A-99CK 17' Omni-Directional Fiberglass Base Station Antenna and Ground Plane Kit. The antenna assembled with ease, only took about 45 minutes from start to finish. I have an SWR/Power meter inline to the radio and after raising the antenna I did an SWR check (always reluctant to key the mic for the first time) and they are 1:1! I couldn't be more pleased and would highly recommend this antenna. 5I trimmed this antenna for 10 meter operation ( per instructions found in packaging) and Iv'e achieved perfect SWR. Hope this he Works as it should. Perfectly tuned for eleven meters. Also works 10 through 17 meters (with a tuner) or if it is trimmed properly. I trimmed this antenna for 10 meter operation ( per instructions found in packaging) and Iv'e achieved perfect SWR. Hope this helps. 73's! 5mishandled at shipping facility I received my antenna, however it had been dragged by one end of manufacturers carton. Consequently the end of carton had worn away causing the groundplane collar to drop out; as a result I am unable to mount the groundplane to the antenna. I am giving this antenna 4 star rating simply because the antenna is usable without it. Amazon did give me an option to return it, I however chose not to simply due to poor quality of handling prior due to first delivery. Seems as though quality control is lacking at shipping center! 4Decent kit. Plan ahead Assembly was straight forward ( more on that in a moment). Light weight, and easy to mount and raise. My signal reports are similar to my 30yr old Shakespeare Big Stick. I read many bad reviews about assembly problems. The assembly of the main antenna segments went smooth, the threaded studs of the segments were smooth and tapered well, absolutely no issues with the main antenna. The issues I experienced were with the GPK-1 ground plane kit. Having read the other reviews I prepared ahead and my install of the GPK-1 kit went smooth. In my case the thread issues reported about were with the ground plane radials. I tested the collar with other brands 3/8x24 antennas and they all screwed in smooth and easy, so the collar was fine. I tried to install the GPK-1 radials and immediately noticed issues. It is obvious by looking at the threads on the radials they are sub-par, lacking the taper grind at the start of the treading and having all sorts of nicks and cuts along the threads. To fix this before buggering up the collar, I chased the threads with a grade 8 - 3/8x24 nut until it ran the threads smoothly. Leaving the nut on the threads I lightly chamfered the start of the threads. If you are not handy with a grinder, you can use a file or just skip the taper. Having smoothed the threads, I marked each radial with colored vinyl tape, and marked a hole on the collar with a matching square of tape. I installed the radials I tapered easily and smoothly, the radials I chased but did not taper, did start and install but did not feel smooth and needed a wrench but once installed, they were removed and installed easily the second time. Now my radials are matched to the hole they were installed in initially with the colored tape. If you plan ahead and prep the threads ahead of time you will avoid the cross-thread/gall issues experienced by others and your install will go smooth. Materials needed : Grade 5 or better 3/8x24 bolt and nut or tap and die kit. colored electrical tape or colored markers if you plan on removing your radials before mounting the antenna. 5Purchased the bad package, package. Cheaper! I ve owned 2 of these antennas years ago. I recently needed another. All the reviews about bad connectors and stuff worried me. I never saw problems like that before. Anyway, just showed up. I ll set up tomorrow but the anxiety was killing me about bad connections. Here s what I did in my living room;Checked contents-Everything was thereSelected and separated 1 of 5 total 102 whips for the antenna itself. Marked (knife) with an A . Screwed in fine to the Antenna top.Mid section screwed fine in bottom section.Took ground plane ring and marked (knife) | on a hole, then tried 1/4 other 102 whips. Was a little picky as the angle is different and you could definitely strip those out easily. It s aluminum..... pay attention, be patient. Marked it | as well.Continuously do that for every hole and skip or try another whip if needed. I ended up in exact order I went. | || ||| |||| markings on both ring and whips.Tomorrow I ll be able to set up and I know everything will fit. Great antenna for a great price! I use to but electric tape over the fiberglass to make it darker. I may have added a few years more life to the thing back then too. I don t remember 10 years ago. I may do the tape again. Not sure. Good luck! 5Bad threads / poor quality control Received antenna and everything appeared to be fine. All was intact and box appeared to be free of damage. As soon as I was ready to install the antenna I discovered the treads in the second section was missing. Buyer please be aware as I am not the first who has had this same problem. The antenna is being returned and Amazon advises they will send another. I m concerned that the next one may have the same issue....we will see. 1New antenna system The antenna seems to be fine. When I order it,with the ground plane kit,the ring had only one hole drilled out,so I was unable to use the ground plane kit. I will get intouch with Amazon and the seller about this issue. I am using 9913 coax and 8 Gage solid copper wire and grounding rod, just in case get hit by lightning also this will help the antenna proforma better. I should have some updates later on.. 4Yes, this antenna works If you are reading this you must be doing your research, good. But, you are also probably confused by all the conflicting reviews here and on various forums or Google searches. Today, using this antenna I made contact (12:42 local) with a fellow Ham operator in Johannesburg, South Africa on the 10 meter band. I live in Wisconsin. That's a distance of 9,126 miles. I am using a Radio Shack HTX10 with 25 watts on SSB. I guess this antenna works! Will you have the same good fortune? I don't know. There are many variables in antenna placement, feed line (coax) and the condition of your transceiver. Here's what I did and didn't do. The A99 is on top of a 30 foot flag pole, I didn't trim the antenna for 10 meters, but I did turn the tuning rings up to about 1 inch from the top setting. I used high quality coax (Times Microwave LMR400) for the 85 foot run to my radio room. I do have the ground plane kit. The pole is well grounded and I didn't paint the attachment point of the antenna. The antenna has plenty of clear space around it (no obstructions or buildings) to radiate the signal. The 10 meter band is open (good propagation) right now. This antenna sets up quickly and it works. Now is the time to get on the air and start making contacts!KD9CPI 5
