Customer Reviews

Presence - Some Good, Some Bad and a lot Ugly Final Update 5/29/18Got a response from Netatmo. My unit is 4 months past it's 1 yr warranty. No replacement and no parts to fix the thing. As I said below, I was an early Netatmo adopter but over several years the products (which I expected to last MANY years) have broken. My outside units consistently got water inside and have all failed while my indoor units (weather base, 2 indoor modules) continue to work. Very disappointed in the overall quality of the product.Update: 5/6/2018The Fresnel lens in the Presence spotlight broke a couple of weeks ago. I attempted to contact Netatmo support but that's never been an easy thing, and so far no reply. The camera still works..with a plastic baggie over the spotlight. Even the spot works but I'm still disappointed in the support arena. I had the entire Netatmo lineup, Weather Station with wind unit, rain unit and additional indoor sensors. The outdoor unit got leaky after a few years and I retired it. The rain unit broke a post during a battery change. I retired that. The wind sensor leaked and corroded the batteries. I retired that. Only the two indoor sensors remain. I'm giving up on the Netatmo stuff.Original post:I've been using a Netatmo Presence camera for a week now. Here are some first impressions. I used the web browser interface in Windows 10 and also the Presence app in Android. I tried several browsers - Firefox, Chrome and Edge, with slightly different results in load time and failure rates. I'm not sure why but it was pretty consistent. In a nutshell:Given the Netatmo cloud issues if I hadn't been able to set up an FTP server I would probably have returned the camera. All the problems I experienced appear to be software and/or server related, so I'm hopeful that they will be fixed over the next couple of months. Actually there's a lot more good than bad.The Good: The install process is actually quite easy. I've installed two. The first took about 45 minutes, the second just about 15 minutes. The "build quality" of the unit is very good. The aesthetic is "modern" so opinions may vary. I like it and it works on my house. The picture resolution is very good in the higher resolution mp4 files. The "recognition" feature seems to be fairly accurate. I did get a vehicle mis-notification one night during some light blowing snow flurries. Still I'm happy enough with that portion. It identified a snow covered cat at night in light snowfall from 30 feet away. Pretty impressive. The time from motion sensing to identification to notification on my phone took about 30 - 60 seconds. Satisfactory. Live View streaming has a bit of a lag, but according to the Netatmo FAQ this is normal. "Presence uses http Live Streaming protocol. Experiencing a slight lag time of a few seconds is normal, as live stream is sent through an encrypted connection from Presence to your device. Videos recorded always provide beginning of the event" The good news then is it appears the Netatmo server is NOT involved in live streaming. The camera has the ability to save files to an FTP server. If you know how to set up the server DO IT. Mp4 files will be saved to both the Netatmo server AND locally. This makes reviewing them easy and some of the more problematic issues below more bearable. The Bad: I am on a 3mbps DSL connection. I have no other options. I have yet to successfully download an mp4 file from the Netatmo cloud service. This may or may not be related to my DSL speed but I routinely download files of much greater size with no issue. I've attempted to download multiple files in the 11 - 20mb range. Every download either fails outright or just hangs and times out. I sometimes get a "Bad Gateway" error 502. This would be a show stopper for me if not for the ability to do local saves via FTP. I mostly can view the lower resolution "clip" in the web interface. Firefox seems to fail at this regularly, Edge fails less and Chrome loads most of the time. I DID NOT do extensive testing on a per browser basis. The resolution is certainly not what I get viewing the mp4 files in the local FTP directory. Again, I could not download a single file in any of the browsers or via the Android app.The Ugly: If you want to review your clips at full resolution you may need an FTP server. The time lapse portion is currently unavailable as ALL downloads from the Netatmo server fail. 1Great Product, when it works. 11/29/2016 - This is my third re-write of this review. I will preempt my review with the statement that I continue to be a loyal customer of the Netatmo family of products for the last two or so years. I own the weather station, additional modules, rain guague, the indoor camera, etc. I've not had problems with any of those. That brings me to the Netatmo Presence. At this point it seems as though there are two major issues with the camera:First, and quite concerning, is that all of the product literature I received (and when I ordered) said it included a 16gb SD card, which could be upgraded to 32gb. That's not what I got. I got an 8gb card. I found this out as I had issues with the stock SD card in the unit, so I went ahead and ordered a 32gb card. Upon receiving the 32gb card I swapped out the stock card. The stock card was ONLY an 8gb card. Upon doing a little bit of research online, I'm not alone. Several US customers have been finding 8gb cards despite all of the product literature stating 16gb. I also have come to understand that the company has changed some of their site language now to show 8gb, but that was NOT the case when these initial units were purchased. It's on paper, in writing, 16gb. This is a big problem and needs to be addressed.Second, and even more concerning, the SD cards have failed for me during two rain events thus far, and I've only had the camera installed for one week. It is under an overhang on the roof, so it's not even in a location that gets direct water unless it's a very windy situation. I can say with anecdotal certainty (if that's a thing), that the failure is a moisture issue. Both times of the SD card failure were at the peak of the rain events that were moving through. The camera shuts off and says "Defective SD Card". When you open up the back, it becomes pretty obvious that despite all of the other waterproofing, there is nothing but grease to waterproof the SD card. This is a huge design issue that needs a fix asap, and we as early adopters of this product need some direct feedback from the company that they will take care of this. This rain failure issue is also echoed by others in the product forums, so I'm fairly confident I'm not taking an unscientific leap here.I wrote in my prior review, which is being replaced by this one, that this, when working, is what I consider a 5-star product. I want this product to work, and will absolutely update my review when/if things are resolved. With that said, the false advertising on the 16gb stock card, and the SD moisture failures on an outdoor camera, are huge issues. I still have faith in the company that's delivered quality products several times over, but that goodwill and trust are eroding quickly. There are really no excuses for either of these issues, and I hope that they communicate a plan with their loyal customer base quickly. 2Update: Both Dead Overpriced, slow, drops off-line, reliability is about 50%. Nice design and LEDs are bright, so works good as an expensive light. Bought two one works better than the other??? Frequently get a black screen for Live view. Says it is connected but won't play live view. Reset, reset, reset. You can see in the picture it says connected but all I get is a black screen with the loading circle going round and round. Just finished another reset and back to this again. Update: 9 months later both cam/lights ae dead. I have been waiting for several days for a repy from tecnical support, it seems non existant. Once you buy a Netatmo product you are on your own. UPDATE a year and a half now and both dead. Front glass fell out of both of them, they are not Arizona weather durable. Heat and moisture have taken a toll. 1Limited field of vision not worth the aggravation of installation and connectivity I bought this camera because of HomeKit compatibility and I tried to like it enough to keep it but I returned it after 10 days. Although the manufacturer states that the camera can be installed upside down, there are NO instructions provided anywhere so you have to make sure to figure out what Up means. Also you absolutely need another person to help with that type of installation, and be prepared for all the tiny screws to fall out as soon as the mounting bracket is held upward.Despite testing the location signal strength with 3 WiFi devices, the camera connected poorly and dropped the signal repeatedly for a day until I was able to use a network workaround to improve the connectivity. The manufacturer will always blame your network for the problem but I believe there s something wrong with the weatherproof enclosure that is weakening the WiFi reception, and I don t believe anyone with an otherwise good WiFi network should have to buy extra equipment for this camera. BTW, the use of the QRCode Card for initial pairing is bizarre. The manufacturer recommends 8 - 15 height for the camera and you have to hold the Card a foot away for pairing, which means you have to stand on a footstool or ladder to do it.When I finally got to use the camera, I discovered there s NO User Guide other than the installation instructions, not even online, so you re left on your own as far as figuring out how the settings and options work. Online Help consists of a FAQ but it s for their entire product line not just the Presence camera. It s next to useless as far as I m concerned.I did like the recognition features but the thing that made me return it was the limited field of vision. Why make an indoor camera with 130 degree field and an outdoor one with just 100? It doesn t make much sense to me like so many other things about the camera. 2Great dual camera & flood light (with people/car detection), but the features could be improved on This product is a great option for those that need a security camera/flood light offering. The fact that the competition wants you to pay a monthly fee seems insane as Presence has no monthly fee option (which is wonderful). The camera setup process was pretty straightforward, but for a handful of folks like me that had to install it on my roof 20 ft off the ground... upside down.... you need to hold onto those little screws with your life. The quality of the camera display when viewing through the app is about as good as it gets. I am very impressed with the picture quality. One negative of the camera lens though is that for being over 20 ft up in the air the angle view of 100 degrees is pretty limiting. I would expect you to have a lense that can toggle different modes to expand the viewing field. The app is designed pretty well, but it took some getting used to as several options are pretty buried. It would be nice if there was a Quick Button on the main screen of the app to toggle the floodlight on instead of having to go to a menu in the app to toggle the light on. Lastly, the detection of objects, cars, people, and animals is so far pretty accurate even at night. To summarize and what it would have taken for 5 starts:-Install should be a bit easier with navigating tiny screws as a handful of folks need to install these high off the ground-The alan wrench did not perfectly fit in my screw hole (joking aside) which made it harder to tighten as the screw began to strip-The angle of the lens should be configurable to widen if needed (think of GoPro's software fish bowl lense)-Navigating the app to simply turn on the floodlight should not require more than one click/tap-The ability to download a time lapse recording over 24 hours is nice, but it would be even better if we could have something closer to the raw data without the time lapse setting (full 24-hour footage to download) 4Long-term, water exposure killed mine, probably will kill yours I've had this camera since just after it was first released, since November 2016. I have absolutely loved it until it died briefly this past month. I've since got it working again, but I'm not convinced it will continue to do so. I've also been disappointed with Netatmo support, which gives me further doubts about its longevity. That's important consider the price of it compared to Ring, which is what I was going to use to replace it. I do have a Ring camera in another part of my house. The big advantage over Ring is that the camera takes little snapshots of motion. With Ring, you know something happened, but then you have to click to view the video. It's a pain. Netatmo will take one to three snapshots of motion, so you can immediately tell what was spotted. Then you can decide if you want to view the video. The other big advantage is there's no online fee. Everything is stored in a local SD card , which streams to your phone. I've easily had a month's worth of captures on the card that came with it.The built-in floodlight works wonderfully. That's what drew me to it in the first place. At the time, there was no other camera really that also had a floodlight. You can control the degree of light, triggering options and so on. I also love that it doesn't look like a camera. It looks like a light. If you want something that doesn't advertise you have a camera, this is an advantage over Ring. Others might feel Ring looking like a camera is a good deterrent. Now the bad. About two months ago, I found I couldn't easily play some clips. Rather than them loading and playing quickly, I would be jumped to the end of a very large video file that wouldn't play. I could download, which helped. It didn't always happen, so I dismissed it as a largely one-off.Then earlier this month, I got a " SD card is defective" error. I read up on the help page that said I needed to replace the card. Further, I learned that the card is not inside some water resistant housing but instead entirely exposed on the bottom of the camera. The protection is a synthetic grease that covers it.When I took the card out, I'm pretty sure I noticed some blue-green corrosion, but I couldn't be sure. It was just a little, if at all. But it made me wonder if the housing had some corrosion on the pins. That really became the case when I replaced the card with a new one that met the required specs but still couldn't get the camera to work.I contacted Netatmo about four days ago for advice. The response was for me to order a free SD card replacement kit, which also comes with the required grease. It's nice that it was offered free, but the link I was given didn't actually bring it up as something you could order. I also wasn't given any advice about why the good card I already had wouldn't work.I replied, and got no responses. It was the holiday weekend in the US, so I was a little understanding on the delay. By the time they did get back to me two days ago, I'd worked out how to get the camera going again. I had to do an entire reset and bring it up again from default settings. That wasn't indicated in their help pages or in their responses. But, it worked -- so far. When I did get a reply, I was told again to order the kit -- which I'd already said didn't exist. It's like no one bothered to read what I'd written before or even check to see that the kit wasn't on the site. And after I got another reply telling me to order the kit, I wrote back a *third* time that there was no kit.Bottom line: I'm glad the camera is working again. I hope eventually I'll get this kit that provides the waterproofing the SD card needs. I'll hope that it all keeps working without issues, because I do like the camera. But if I had to replace it, I'd go with Ring or something where I don't feel damp and water will be a long-term issue.UPDATE (April 2019): Now the IR and floodlight no longer work. The floodlight was the main selling point for this camera. I really will miss how smart the camera detection and thumbnail display is. But I'm convinced this isn't robust enough for outdoor use. Save your money; buy something else. 1Back to surprises at my doorway The alert system is really accurate. I am no longer surprised by deliveries left sitting out in zero degree weather all day. Easy to set up and maintain. Okay. Here s my update. My glowing recommendation has just disappeared. Apparently fog and humid weather destroys the sd card. Not happy with this at all since Michigan is nothing if not humid most of the year. My recommendation has just turned to don t bother with this one . 1Product is not designed to be used outdoors I own four of these cameras. Purchased two from Amazon in March and installed in April. This is May and moisture from rain has accumulated inside this camera housing (see photo) making the video image useless. This unit and a second one purchased the same time have both required SD cards replaced and/or cleaned several times due to moisture. If there is a problem with the SD cards the cameras do not work.So one star for having these up a month and they clearly are not robust to be outdoors and the SD card design means I ll be climbing ladders often to keep them running. 1Does everything I need. So far, so good. I have had the camera up and operational for about a week now and I am really happy with its features and performance. When I started researching what I wanted in a surveillance camera, the Netatmo had what I was looking for. I was interested in a camera that would not require me to re-wire my house and garage with power and CAT5 cable. The Netatmo replaces an existing light fixture and has wireless connectivity so that fit well. Also, I wanted a camera that would send its videos and photos to my own personal storage. The Netatmo allows you to send to your own personal FTP service or to a dropbox account you have so you dont have to pay additional monthly storage fees to a third party like so many other security camera providers. I also wanted a camera that had night vision and a flood light capability. Both of these are included with the Netatmo. So far, I have learned that the camera can distinguish between cars, animals and people and will send you notifications on which ones it sees. You can also tweak the area it scans and help it learn if it is misidentifying certain incidents for others. The installation was probably the only part I was not very pleased with. The mounting of the device is not very intuitive and it works better if you use wire nuts to attach the power cables to your house wiring rather than the tiny junction coupler that they include. At this point I dont have anything negative to say about the product or its operation. The video is very sharp and I have wonderful surveillance of the area in front of my house now. As a final note, I feel that this solution would not scale well if you wanted a system with many cameras. It works best if you have a need for only 1 or 2 cameras since I believe that each would operate independently. 5This product has a great concept to it I have been installing professional CCTV systems for years, and been a network engineer for about 12 years. This product has a great concept to it, and to give Netatmo credit, the recognition of people, cars, and animals works quite well. The app navigation is easy for customers to navigate.I have a few BIG problems with the product line though after installing a few for clients. The performance is not what I would expect out of a $300 camera. This operates through a peer-peer connection through Netatmo; this connection seems to be quite slow, resulting in sometimes a 30-60 second delay between an event happening, and it appearing in the live feed on the phone/tablet. The standard IP camera systems I install most of the time have no more than a 10 second delay, even on DSL. The 30-60 delay is occurring on a 100x10 cable connection. The stock MicroSD card is junk. The classification of the card, U1 is OK for the lightweight use of these cameras. The failure rate of the cards is absolutely unacceptable. Out of 14 cameras installed, I have already replaced 5 of them. That is a 35% failure rate, and prior to any rain. At one client I ended up installing a 32GB Sandisk U3 V30 MicroSD card (link below). This did appear to help at first, but performance soon dropped again. At one client we have been in constant contact with the tech support trying to pinpoint the problem with remote viewing performance. We get terrible performance on cameras that have great WiFi signal, within 30ft of the AP. The technical support is less than competent, they keep repeating things after explaining the network setup and can't offer any additional help than what a normal tech can do. If you have a mesh system such as Ubiquiti Unifi or Cisco Meraki, it doesn't seem to do much to help. Their tech support also doesn't understand what a multi-AP WiFi system is.One thing I feel is very lacking in the configuration, is the ability to set a static IP address on each camera. If you are having problems during the initial setup of each camera, it gives you the option, but NOT in the app. I have a big problem with this as I always set a static IP address to devices such as cameras, printers, TVs, etc. I would appreciate being able to do this directly to each camera rather than match a MAC address in the router's DHCP server. The performance is a definite problem for my clients; Netatmo needs to redesign the flow of data so that live views are not delayed as much. They also should update the stock MicroSD cards.SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDHC Memory Card Plus SD Adapter up to 100 MB/s, Class 10, U3, V30, A1-32GB SDSQXCG-032G 2
