Customer Reviews

Does the job, and well Nicely constructed and sturdy. I use this to store a spare front door key for houseguests, maintenance workers, and even myself when I'm out jogging or walking the dog and so far no one's had a problem with accessing the key; the combination mechanism works smoothly and well. I also had no problem whatsoever setting the master combination to attach and remove the box to and from my doorknob, and changing the combination is also simple (save the manufacturer's instructions though!) The storage space for the keys themselves is rather small (it's not even easy getting two keys on a small ring in or out of the box), but as a single key storage solution this is exactly what I was looking for, without the hassle of installing a screw-mounted key storage box to my doorframe. 5Helping People Help You Its nice and sturdy, better than leaving the key under the mat, or in the gutter. Two codes for the key and the lock. I hung mine on the step rail. Now if something happens to me, no one will have to break in. The animal won't starve. Perfect. Great transaction, super fast shipping and item as described. 5Quality and convenience even if you aren't a realtor. Bought these when I had a new storage shed built with 2 gates/doors. Already had an older one that has been in service for maybe over 20 years so I thought to get 3 that could share a code ( hate!!!! trying to remember all those passwords and coded and whatnot). On reading the instructions I realized I'd had a convenient secret compartment hidden away inside the lock for storing a key all along. I've had to be creative getting back into the house when I've locked myself out accidentally. Now I don't have to. I just wrote myself a note on my phone giving me the 4 # second code that is set up automatically when you set the code to unlock the unit. Great! I already know they last a long, long time and now I feel much more comfortable having 3 locks that share the same code and have a hidden compartment to secure an additional key/keys to other locks. Nifty! 5Very good lockbox. This box is strong and nice looking. One feature I liked especially are the combination dials. They are white numbering on a black ring so the white numbers stand out well against the black background. A problem with some of these combination dials. There is a soft rubbery bumper pad on the back to protect paint on doors and the shackle is also coated with a soft plastic or rubbery sleeve. The box compartment for the keys is smaller than a lot of these boxes so you may not get as many keys in it. But if you are just putting a couple of house keys, or so, inside, it should be fine. (You may get a few more in if the keys are not too thick.)There are two combinations required. The combination to open the key door is different from the combination to unlock the shackle to hang it on something. You are able to choose either one of these two, and the unit sets the other one for you. So you can set the key door combination to a number you will remember easily but that leaves a different number for the shackle which is determined by what you set for the door. So that will probably be a rote memory issue for you.Therein lies the rub.Be sure to read the directions very, very carefully and be sure not to lock it onto to anything or put any keys inside until you fully understand how the combinations are set.I can't say this more urgently, it isn't for the mentally challenged, it takes some figuring out. (You'll need to plan to sit down for a little while and not rush into it and wonder what the combination turned out to be.)If you are in your elderly configuration, maybe this isn't the lockbox for you. But if your reasoning abilities are good, this is a fine lock and is less bulky than more traditional lockboxes. The problem is the confusion that arises in setting the two combinations. If you want to set the door combination to a number you remember you have set it in conjunction with the shackle combination. For example, the door combination will be 3 digits higher than the shackle combination. If the door combination is to be 555 the shackle is 222. You set the shackle combination first, (if I understand it.) so you write down the door combination and subtract 3 when setting the shackle.Complicated to write about, you'll get it when you get the lock and instructions which has a little table to help.To further complicate the set up is that in order to set the combinations, you have to turn a "setting screw" on the side of the unit to free the lock to set combinations. But if you forget to return the "setting screw" back to its original position, and try scrambling the combination, you are really resetting the combination to the scrambled number, until some day you remember to turn the "setting screw" to complete the process. So, while your are setting and figuring out the setting process, keep a pad of paper next you and write every combination you dial so if you forget to return the "setting screw" back to normal, you will have a list of possible settings on the pad that may open the lock and let you start again. Can't tell you how careful to be until it is set up. Don't put your keys inside or lock to a door until you have all this working properly. Then write down your combinations somewhere. (I put the shackle combination inside the key storage compartment figuring I may remember the combination to the box, but would probably forget the shackle combination. The reason for the two combinations, is actually not a bad idea. You can give the key compartment combination to some one and they can get the keys out of the box, but they cannot remove and misplace the lockbox without knowing the shackle combination also.Clear as mud! It is important that you read instructions and play with it for awhile to be sure you get it.I didn't give 5 stars because of the complications with setting the combinations in the beginning. You should only have this issue once unless you want a new combination.Good box, however.Steve 4I recommend it I use it as a second key for me lady who has the habit of locking herself out. I keep it locked to an outside gas pipe, out of sight. In over a year I've had it, it saved me several trips to let her in. It has 9999 combinations. I figure if someone is willing to go through the trouble of finding the right combination they deserved to get inside the house. Besides they would have found another way in if they need to get in this badly. 5Nice, steardy lock. Like it. I like this because it's much slimmer than other lock boxes and less obvious. I like how thick the over the door knob latch is; harder to be able to cut off. I bought this to use for the dog walker. The description says you can have a different combo for the latch and key door. You can and have to. You can not chose the combo for each like you'd assume. There is a conversion chart. Meaning you chose the combo for latch and there's a number from your chosen combo that converts to the key combo, or vise versa. Meaning, there will be one combo on this that will be random and you'll have to memorize. No biggie. 5Lasts maybe a year - Have used this model for years. Lately, I've kept them for longer, as I used to just leave them behind for the new homeowners to use. That saves me a trip back to the house, if they're cheap enough. For the past year, I've noticed that my lockboxes I've had in -service for more than 6 months, on a front door's handrailing, etc., are really beginning to stick. The wheels become hard to turn, even if you WD-40. After two incidents where the maid service could not get it open (wheels stick or numbers did not line-up perfectly to open), I'm moving on to other models. Perhaps if they had a slider-cover over the combination number wheels, they might not stick. 3great once you learn how the code works this was difficult to understand at first, but it works well. I wanted a code to open the key box that was easy to remember. In order to do this, you have to work backwards, as there is one code to unlock the bolt part that you secure to something. Based on that code, it gives you the code to unlock the key box- so I had to decide what the key code was going to be, then enter the correct numbers to lock the bolt part. It is very well made and I think it should be able to last outside for at least a couple years. I'll update this review after the winter is over. 4Best insurance peasy to set combo and use. Uno trusive on iron rail. Offers lockout protection and EMT a d fire can open rather than break door in emergencies. 5Piece of Cake I recently needed to purchase three lock boxes, and relied strongly on the reviews to make my selection. I am very happy to have chosen this one.Using the instructions provided, I found it very easy to determine the shackle combination from which the compartment door combination is automatically set. I started by writing my desired door combo on the instruction sheet beneath the decoder chart, which then made it easy to derive the shackle combination. Then I followed the instructions to set the shackle combo, et voila! the door combo was automatically set for me! It took about three minutes. The key compartment is a cylinder sized for about five keys. You will need to look elsewhere for one that can hold a key card. The compartment has a little post in it that begs to act as an anchor for a short keychain to encourage the user to return the key to the compartment. However, the gap between the post and the wall does not allow you to use beaded chain for this purpose, although we rigged a way to make it work anyway by using a twist tie and a small split ring to attach the beaded chain. The manufacturer does not suggest using the post for this purpose, so I would call it a bonus feature outside of their specs.I do not yet have any feedback on durability over time, but can say that the fit and finish appear to be high quality. I will be interested to see how it handles freezing rain, etc. over time. The shackle is protected with vinyl, and the reverse has a little plastic pad to prevent it from marring your door. I can't tell whether moisture will be able to invade the lock mechanism or key compartment. In closing, I recommend that you try this lockbox so long as you don't need one with a large compartment. If you look at the photo you can gauge its size relative to the size of a typical key. 5
