The sound is quite good with plenty of fullness and bass punch but there are numerous issues that keep this unit from getting my recommendation:The headphone output is junk. There s what sounds like radio static and hiss even before I ve pressed play. It gets 4 times worse once the music starts. Unlistenable. Maybe I got a defective unit because I find it hard to believe it was designed like this. Tested with high quality PSB M4U and Sony Studio headphones.During cd playback it s not possible to reverse past the beginning of the track you re on into a previous track. The vast majority of CD players do this so it s really a bad oversight. Reverse and forward search are not progressive either - one speed only, about 10x.The unit takes a long time to turn on and for cds to read and play, much slower than any standalone CD player.Radio presets can t be reset easily. If you want to change preset #1 you have to delete everything. In short, excellent sound from speakers let down by a primitive user interface and horrible headphone sound. Wish I d splurged for the Yamaha or Onkyo. 2Most everything you could need, want, or expect (for this price) I thought I had a modest wishlist for a micro system: CD player, Bluetooth, headphone output, at least one input (either 3.5 or RCA), AM/FM radio, traditional speaker outputs so I can use my own speakers, less than $200. It ended up that this was essentially the only one I could find that fit that bill. Although I have switched out the speakers, I used it for a while with the stock speakers. I was surprised and pleased by what I heard. The stock speakers are strong and the sound you get out the box will leave most every user feeling as if he got his money's worth. There was none of the tinniness or muddiness that you tend to get with low-end speakers of this size. One minor criticism is that the speakers are hard-wired. That might be frustrating for some users who want to position the speakers farther apart than pre-attached speaker wire allows. The system is very-user-friendly and intuitive. Easy to pair a Bluetooth device. An appreciated bonus feature is the subwoofer out. This is not a room-shaking system, and hopefully you would not expect it to be at this price and this size. But for those who want the low end, the pre-out makes it easy to add a powered sub. It is also nice to have two auxiliary inputs -- a traditional RCA on the back and a 3.5 on the front. This gives you the flexibility to connect most anything, without the need for adapters. 5Display went dead after just 9 months --- Sharp has poor warranty support Fits perfectly on a shelf that's on my TV stand and plays great sounding music.Update 9/18/2018: The display went dead after just 9 months. It still worked but it made it very hard to change any setting. Several other reviews mention how their display went dead as well so looks like this is a defect in the design of this product. I called Sharp Tech Support who created a case and gave me the name of the electronic repair shop to take it to here in Boise ID. I went to that repair shop and they refused to fix it stating they were undermanned due to a tech recently quitting. I called Sharp support back up and they then gave me a new repair shop to take it to but this was in a different city not worth driving to. 1Only one (minor) complaint I am very happy with this purchase. The sound is great (although I'm in my 60's, so maybe I'm not the best source). I am also very happy with the size of the item - it fits very well in the limited space I had for it. My one complaint, however, is the VERY ANNOYING almost continual scrolling of the message "Bluetooth Stby" on the vacuum flourescent display when the unit is turned off. This is an issue for me, since the unit is located just below the wall-mounted TV, and it is REALLY ANNOYING! 4Best Micro System for the money. Not too much to choose from in the less than $200 price range, but this unit was a very pleasant surprise! Most of it s abilities are accessed through the included remote control. Bluetooth connection was a breeze. Radio reception was very clean. The X Bass feature only boosts bass response marginally, but really starts pumping when it s boosted with it s EQ, treble didn t need much before sounding too bright. It goes loud enough to satisfy most tastes & doesn t distort easily. Plenty of inputs to choose from, & it does have a headphone output jack. The speaker cabinets have a port to help extend bass response. I compared a $175 Sony system which was pretty bogus quality-wise, & a $90 Onkyo system which wasn t clear about a headphone jack, I found out it would connect to headphones via Bluetooth which I didn t want. A reviewer bought both the Onkyo & Sharp systems & said the Sharp was better all the way around, & he was right! If you keep your expectations realistic, this system won t disappoint you 5I loved my Panasonic as it had surround My 11 year old Panasonic shelf system finally bit the dust. I loved my Panasonic as it had surround, 5 disc changer and 300 watts. I searched far and wide for a replacement and finally settled on this unit. I ordered on a Saturday and it was delivered on Monday. Excellent service. I was disappointed that the box it came in looked so small. I unpackaged it and the unit looks like a quality unit. Hooking it up was a breeze and I turned it on. A little lacking in power but I hooked up my Yamaha 6" 60 watt sub and it came to life. Bluetooth is an excellent feature, simple to use remote although I would rather have buttons to preset for radio stations. The remote has typical buttons.I am really happy with this unit and it fit my needs more than any other unit under $200.00 5Check the CD player first I really wanted to like this little system, but the first one I bought from Amz warehouse deals, open box, would not read my store-bought pre-recorded CDs. The sound was great (radio) and I wanted to keep the system, but again, it would not play my pre-recorded CDs. Since this little system is so affordable for all the features, next I purchased same unit at BestBuy on-line, open-box. It played my bluetooth phone (Amazon Music) and it sounded great. Tried the CD player on this unit, and again, it would not read or play my CDs. Disappointed.UPDATE 12/18: Sharp repair sent a prepaid shipping label for me to send the unit to their shop. It was returned to me in about 10days, and now works perfectly. I am happy with the System sound and especially the bluetooth and flash drive capability. You won't find that anywhere else for less dollars so I have changed my rating to 4-stars, subtracting one star for the inconvenience of having to send it back. Sharp stands by their products! 4This unit was an excellent choice to replace my 10-year-old Sony stereo set which ... This unit was an excellent choice to replace my 10-year-old Sony stereo set which quit working a few months ago. I have connected the FM input to my 50-year-old rooftop TV antenna; I get excellent reception from many stations. Sound quality is good for a small set. I can plug in a USB stick and easily listen to MP3's. 40 presets for AM/FM stations are probably 35 more than I need. Black unit looks good and fits nicely with my TV set-top box and DVD player in my entertainment center. User guide is surprisingly well-written. 5A Better Choice Than the Onkyo CS-265 I bought this to be a bedroom system for listening to MP3s via flash drive, FM radio and as the aux sound output for my bedroom TV set. It has been just great so far. I had bought an Onkyo CS-265 for my daughter as a present and had been impressed with the sound of that unit and how seamlessly the Bluetooth works. But I did not like the glossy plastic finish of he Onkyo (a real dust and fingerprint magnet) and it does not have a line-level output for a subwoofer. After researching other units, I settled on the Sharp XLF-102B. I really like the metal case on the main unit and the metal grills on the speakers, which are also made out of MDF instead of plastic. They sound better than the Onkyo speakers to me and the stiffer cabinets don't resonate at higher volumes. Plus the Sharp has 5 watts more per channel than the Onkyo. When I added a small 100-watt powered sub to the system, it really came alive. Freed of trying to drive bass notes, the Sharp now plays louder and clearer.I have bought both the Onkyo and Sharp units, set each up and listened a lot to both. This unit is better made than the Onkyo with metal and MDF surfaces instead of plastic, has more power, and a subwoofer output, plus it's $75 cheaper. The Onkyo is sleeker-looking and has more name appeal, but that's it.The Sharp plays reasonably loud, sounds at least as good, has more features and is better-built. Don't criticize this unit as some have for not playing at 110 decibels. It isn't built to do that. If you want the kind of power that delivers ear-splitting volume, you are in the wrong price range here. 5Caution -- garbage in your near future. Worked like a charm--for one month. Sounded great. The bluetooth pairing worked. The auxiliary input worked. The auto on/off and timer worked. I even liked the remote. Then, two weeks after the return window closed, the display just stopped displaying anything. The device is now virtually worthless as you cannot tell what band you are on, whether the bluetooth is operating, what channel is being played, etc. So, for anyone in need of a big black paperweight, Sharp is your brand. 1
