Description

For the past 160 years, giant birds have been reported in the skies above the Black Forest region of northern Pennsylvania. Now, it's up to one man and one woman, to find out where they came from, and where they've gone. Failed Ph.D. candidate and assistant museum curator Ian McQuade is rescued by cartographer Alma Del Nephites, after an ill-fated expedition into the Amazon Basin. They travel to meet the enigmatic CEO of a secretive organization, where the two are given the opportunity to seek out proof of the existence of thunderbirds. A madman's journal will lead them into the heart of a 700 year-old mystery, where cutting edge technology designed to locate and identify such creatures will collide with an ancient power that has hidden and protected them for centuries. Ian must face his past, in order to believe in a future that couldn't possibly exist. With lightning in their eyes and thunder in their wings, who will control the fate and destiny of the thunderbirds?

Customer Reviews

Excellent concept, very disjointed writing styleI was struck by the concept of The Cryptids Trilogy and eagerly purchased the 1st book of the series. The 1st thing that struck me was that the book is hard to read. The author interlaces his writing with a lot of unnecessary comments and stuff out of left field. His style seems vaguely reminiscent of something written by a sophomore in high school that doesn't quite grasp or understand syntax or sentence structure. Perhaps if he got a different editor it might help. On top of that, the main character is kind of a pussy. I haven't finished the 1st book yet and at this point, unless this improves I can't say that I'd recommend this to anyone who reads beyond a grade school level...but, the concept is marvelous and if you can look past the writing style of the author then the book may be enjoyable. 3Fascinating TaleIf you are interested in cryptids, and want something new, fun, and well-written, I can't brag enough about Dallas Tanner! 5Maybe...Alot of the reviewers note good research and detail, while the research is probably above par the detail is excruciating! I am trying so hard to like this book and characters but 1/2 way through I am one more page closer to deleting it forever. It's all been said before in previous reviews... poorly written, lack of structure and having to wade through the inconsistinces is painful. I would like to finish this book only because of the time I have invested in it but don't know if I can...update 8/16/11I did finish it and he just about redeems himself in the end except for the redundancies over emoted scenes. I will get his second book because its only $3 and see if there is an improvement with the edititing and writing. Still a 2 star book... 2Excruciatingly slow - don't bother!I was amazed to read that the author was born in 1956. He writes like a teenager. The book is full of typographical errors, grammatical errors and wordprocessing errors (added sentences without reviewing how that impacts the flow of the surronding sentences). There is strong evidence of the use of a thesaurus, to find unecessary synonyms. During several chapters the characters always look, react or display two emotions, often contradictory, sometimes impossibly contracictory ("she displayed both confusion and comprehension"). Not just a few times, but constantly. After a few chapters of this, it ends, like this was a class assignment for a creative writing course. There is a continual use of "big words", when there is no need for it. The characters are shalow and immature, even though they are PhD's or CEO's of a major corporation; I'm not nitpicking here. Other than Alma all the major players are very immature. Particularly irritating is the constant switching of how a charachter is referred to: In the same paragraph the same person will be Alma, DelNephites (or something like that), and "the gorgeous south American". It is very strange, as if the use of personal pronouns is forbidden. It is less of a problem once you get to know the characters, but early on this is just confusing and irritating. The sheer amount of detail given is presumably unnecessary and burdensome to wade through. Do we really need to know about former girl friends, a dog in an abondoned apartment, a failed attempt at milatary school and such? At times the author waxes eloquent on technology, mythology, geology, again with much detail that seems unnecessary. Well, who knows how much detail is needed to sustain this for three whole books? When you set out to write a trilogy, I guess you need lots of words. Read the blurb on the book and imagine that going on page after page. The story just drags on and on, giving glimmers of hope for action, drama, suspense, or intrigue. Sometimes the author delivers; sometimes it just dies on the page - possibly to be revisited at a later time, but who knows?I'll never know, because after finally reaching 50% the author announced the two main characters were going on a journey, but didn't realize it would be a spirtual journey. I could just imagine the trife that awaited me in excruciating detail. I decided this book is not worth it (or "for the birds" - see what I did there?). I'm not one to easily give up on a book: waste of money, waste of my time, do kinda want to know what happens... But you know, once I decided to delete it from my Kindle, I found myself relieved and immediately stopped caring about Ian, Alma en the Thunderbirds. So: a great big thumbs down. I gave it one star, since I assume I can't give it 0 stars. Most certainly don't buy the trilogy until you have wrestled your way through the first book. Maybe you'll want more, though I doubt it. I just downloaded two more Donavan Creed novels by John Locke, and am looking forward to reading them now! 1Shadow of the ThunderbirdThis book is painfully slow. The writer does forget where he was REPEATEDLY, the book is poorly edited. There are multiple grammatical errors. Topics are repeated because he's forgotten where he was or if he introduced the information previously.I found the main characters unlikeable and unrelatable. Ian is a dolt and doesn't ever fully redeem himself. The loose ends are never fully tied up. I slogged through it, but never felt "gripped" by the story or characters. 1Ho HumI liked the book because I enjoy crypto stuff, but this book is ho hum. It seems to just drag and how about an original idea for once, its always the native guy who speaks to nature and what not. There are some interesting aspects to the novel and because they are cheap i will read the second one in the series. I understand it is the authors first book and I will assume he will get better the more he writes. For me it is the writing style, it needs to tighten up and one more thing the semi love triangle between the main character and his partner and the dudes niece, totally unneeded. That was really annoying how he constantly is thinking in his mind about his partner when he knows he loves the other girl, that kind of crap can be cut out of the story and would make for a better read, in my opinion. 2Cryptozoology Tour De' ForceI have been a student of cryptozoology for over 35 years. My collection of books on this subject by diverse authors is quite extensive. The greatest challenge these writers face is to make what can be a daunting intellectual journey interesting and enjoyable to long time students as well as to those new to the field. D. L. Tanner has accomplished this in spades with "Shadow of The Thunderbird." In this book he has taken most all of the reliable reports of these creatures from years past and woven them into a novel. Since I have studied this subject in the past it was very nice to have so many disparate facts gathered in one place. Mr. Tanner could have obviously written a dry textbook or doctoral dissertation on this subject, but has done us a far greater service by putting forth his case in this book. I wholeheartedly recommend this fine work of cryptozoology research to anyone with an interest in the field. I also recommend it without reservation to anyone who is interested in an interesting and well written adventure novel. Finally, it is my hope that we see many more good things from Mr. Tanner over the years to come. 5MERGING OF MYTHS, MESSAGE, AND SPIRITHaving first read this book over 2 years ago, I am once again moved by Mr. Tanner's skill as a story-teller, the message he conveys, and the manner in which he not only presents the spirit of the characters but the mind-set he presents.Just because we have not, or cannot, see or verify the reality of something does not give one the liberty of presuming that something unknown or verified does not, in fact, exist in reality. Whether or not the premise of this novel is fiction or, in part, reality is not the point. Mr. Tanner invites us to embrace a mind-set which challenges us to avoid presumptions simply because we are ignorant of the actual truth.Just think of the cell phones we take for granted now. Just a few hundred years ago, if a traveler out of time were to appear suddenly in, say, Salem, Massachusetts, and be observed carrying on an audible conversation with a disembodied voice (actually on speaker with cell phone), that individual would have been declared an evil tool of Satan, captured, tortured and killed. We already know that creatures appearing out of time have been discovered. That other myths have not been conclusively verified or disproven does not automatically preclude their existence. We simply have not the means or motivation with which to provide real answers...yet.Meanwhile, Mr. Tanner's marvelous talent as a story teller have pulled in my attention as surely as the proverbial tractor-beam of sci-fi lore. I've read 4 of his books so far and will continue to read every book he publishes for as long as he continues to write them.Thank you, Mr. Tanner for such a wonderful adventure of the mind and spirit. I look forward to more. 5Too many commas!!This book would be SO much easier to read if the author left out about half the commas! The writing can't flow because of this habit, which makes it difficult to read. The author also jumps from one thought to another with nothing to connect the two and this makes it difficult to follow at times. At other times he does a good job of telling the story. Am hoping that the next book is written in a style that is easier to read and follow. 3Good readingThis book was well written and done and the story line leads you on a journey to a great conclusion. 4
