    Winds Vs Dead Cat = Dead Cat Wins After Some Sound Editing I bought the dead cat for my Rode DDCGO DeadCat Go and it fitted all snuggly. It helps with the wind for sure, not sure about those 100mph + gusts of wind though so, if anyone got into that kind of environment, please let me know what was your experience. I use this mostly indoors next to my window on my workstation for vlogs. I also did used this on parties with loud DJ's the mic alone does a really good job but, this has helped it even more with crispy sounds.PROs:- Does what it is intended to do for the winds- Looks cool and literally looks like a dead catCons:- Calling it dead cat in public with cat lovers sounds like I offended them 5Instantly gives you far better audio than camera's internal mics I have used a rode vmp extensively in the past... the +20db gain setting, when coupled with lowering my DSLR's gain level results in clean, hiss-free audio, that sounds quite decent under the right circumstances (and far, far better than any camera's pitiful internal mics) The first videomic pro that i ordered was faulty, and had a short in it, but amazon quickly sent me another one. I personally prefer to record my audio separately, off camera, with a zoom or a tascam, and then sync back in post, but i have found that for certain situations (especially run and gun type filmmaking) that is not always possible, and it's nice to have a good backup of at least decent quality audio with the rode on the camera at all times, just in case something goes wrong with my other audio options.I almost went with the shure vp83, because it looks to have better (metal) build quality for the same price and a couple of other cool features, but rode's super impressive 10 year warranty kept me with them, that's awesome.TL;DRWith the rode videomic pro, you can get some pretty great audio, essential especially for the times you can't rely on other externally recorded audio options. 4Great mic, but not reliable in windy circumstances... So I've used Rode mics for YEARS. I've owned two NTG-2 (Rode NTG2 Condenser Shotgun Microphone) mics and I absolutely love the quality and performance.Since I film on a Canon 5D Mark III primarily (7D is the backup camera), this Videomic Pro seemed like the perfect addition to my arsenal. It is built very solid, a nice short (but not too short) cable to connect to your camera, great quality (even in noisy situations. Head over to YouTube and search for "Chowderfest 2013 Recap" to hear how clear the host is, even with a noisy background with a lot of people and music), and it came with the Deadcat Wind Muff which is supposed to significantly cut down on wind noise. Make sure you pickup some 9V batteries (which say they last 70 hours of operation, but I've only used the mic for a total of 12 hours so far and haven't experienced any battery/quality loss). Here's the ones I purchased: Duracell Procell 9 Volt Batteries, Pack of 12I'm not sure which isn't working the way it should, but it's either the mic's built-in wind screen, or the Deadcat Wind Muff, but I recently had a shoot in a moderately windy environment (5-15mph wind/gusts) and I have to say that the audio is bad...to the point where I'm dreading having the client listen to the audio.I really had high hopes for this as the wind screens are meant to help cut down on wind, while not hindering the audio of what is supposed to be heard...quite frankly, I'd take some minor audio muffles if it means I can still hear the people needed to be heard. The wind noise for me is the ultimate killer in the star rating...either cut more wind down, or don't advertise it as a "foam windscreen that minimizes handling and wind noise to keep your recordings crystal clear" since I have everything except "crystal clear" audio.I hope that Rode fixes this windy mess... 4Funny (and morbid) name for a must have device! It's a little morbid calling this windscreen a dead kitten, but it works wonders on improving the sound quality in noisy situations.The Rode Dead Kitten is great because it fits perfectly on the audio recorder (Zoom H4n here) with an elastic hole that grips the recorder firmly. Unlike the foam screen included with the Zoom H4n that seems to fall off constantly. Also, unlike that foam windscreen, this one seems to actually work.Wind noise is eliminated in nearly all circumstances, probably not under gale force winds, but steady breezes are eliminated really well. What would be a constant hum without or with the foam windscreen included with the H4n disappears altogether with this.This isn't without its drawbacks however.Firstly, it also can muffle overall sound. Well duh, you might say, but what I mean is this: if you're in an environment with even a slight breeze... you need to get rid of it otherwise you get horrible wind sound, right? Well since the Zoom's included windscreen is pointless you turn to your dead kitten. But now you need to boost the audio -- and when you do that, you run into increased sensitivity to background noise and potentially even a little bit of that wind noise you were working to get rid of.So essentially it's a little harder to find a happy medium.Secondly, there's the name itself -- the dead kitten. If you don't leave it attached and you ask someone to hand you the dead kitten, you might get some nasty looks.In summary:Pros:Great at eliminating wind noise.Way better at staying where you want it than the included H4n screenCons:Can muffle sounds you DO wantPeople will make fun of you for having what looks like the old Troll dolls.Overall, definitely worth the 'price of admission' to use this on nearly all recording sessions or occasions even if you're inside (because it can get rid of some background noise. Just make sure you're recording at a high enough sensitivity to get all the sound you want -- and watch that you don't get sound you don't. 4Works OK in breezy conditions I use the Rode VideoMic Go that came with my Canon 80D Video Creator's Kit.The VideoMic Go ships with a foam mic cover with "RODE" written all over it. It doesn't work very well against the wind--so I bought this DeadCat.First I took off the RODE foam cover.Next I tried to slide on the DeadCat. However, it was a very tight fit. Initially, it seemed like I wouldn't be able to get it all the way on. Then I figured out that inside the DeadCat is a foam cover--the same as my original RODE foam cover (just without "RODE" written all over it).What was happening, was the foam cover was getting all squished inside the DeadCat when I was sliding it onto the mic--preventing me from getting it on all the way.I took the foam cover out from inside the DeadCat, and put it on the mic.Then I put the DeadCat on over the foam cover.It took some fiddling--but I eventually got it on.I took it to my kid's football practice, and shot some video with my Canon 80D. There was a 10-15mph breeze that day. In my video clips, I can hear some muffled wind noise, but overall, it's 90% better than shooting without the DeadCat.I recommend getting this if you've got the Rode VideoMic Go, and plan to shoot outdoors. It isn't expensive, it fits very snugly, and it gets rid of 90% of the wind noise. 4Seems to work pretty well. Was at the beach on a windy ... Seems to work pretty well. Was at the beach on a windy evening, no discernible wind noise. However, if you open the window on the car at 50 MPH with the microphone in the path of the wind, all you hear is wind. So there are limitations, but not unexpected. 5Well built but surprisingly hard to fit The quality of the wind shield seems good, but I was struck at how awkward the fit was for an OEM accessory. I actually had to look up a YouTube video to ensure I was doing it right, and even then you have to open the back in order to turn the Mic on or off. Not an ideal design. I'll keep it, but it's quite possible that there is a third-party solution that is a better fit for the VideoMic Pro 3Works good, but make sure you get the right one! Amazon has bundled reviews and answers together for the videomic deadcats. Heres what I've found. There are 2 versions of the VideoMic Pro; the original (with rubber bands) and the Rycote system (hence VideoMic Pro R). The rycote is the ones with the u-shaped rubber cradle setup. The deadcat for the original VMP will very snuggly fit over the VMP-R, but it distorts the stock foam and doesn't reach all the way to the back of the mic (about an inch short). The VMP-R deadcat slides over the updated mic easily and goes all the way back, there is no real pressure on the stock foam. Hope this helps someone. 4Not good over 10mph winds. I purchased this as a replacement for my ProAim microphone blimp. I have used the deadcat that came with that blimp for years in 25 mile an hour winds with no wind noise. Unfortunately you can't buy replacement deadcats from ProAim, you have to buy a whole new blimp.This deadcat/wombat design is poor. The fur is not near as dense as the ProAim deadcat (which is not known for having high quality products). I get wind noise in anything over 10mph with this deadcat.The bottom of this deadcat also is not able to be fully closed. There is a drawstring, but the majority of it still has a gap. Other deadcats have zippers or velcro to fully close the gap. Having this gap can allow wind to get into the blimp and cause noise.It also sheds hair like a dog.I expect more from Rode and more for $50. 1Good enough for Afghanistan Using this on my Zoom H4n, mounted on my Canon 7D, shooting for Uncle Sam in Afghanistan. I quickly discovered that the Zoom was really bad about wind noise, whether it's actual wind, if you're moving, or if you're speaking into it. If you've invested in a Zoom, you absolutely must get this product. You're not getting professional quality audio without it.I was concerned about it coming off in heavy wind environments, like aboard helicopters (where I often find myself). No problems at all, yet.Strong crosswinds, full sprints, no wind noise at all. The only time I've discovered wind noise was directly under a Chinook helicopter last week. Of course, the video from that is completely useless because I was trying to save myself and my rig from being blown across the Afghan desert. So, this thing will stop anything, provided you don't have a tornado 10 feet in front of you. 5
