Customer Reviews

Can cut 2" emt tubingI had some 2 inch diameter emt tubing I needed to cut down, and I asked my internet friends and the top responses was this manual tube cutter, and not some sort of power tool. At 60 ish dollars I could have gotten a cheap power tool. Also I didn't believe a manual tool whose sole power was through tightening a screw and scoring would cut through this thick metal. Pvc and copper, sure. But I gave it a go, and color me surprised, it worked.5Works for 16 gauge steel pipeI wanted a pipe cutter for 16 gauge steel pipe I used to reinforce the roof of a car canopy, According to the specs on this cutter, it's meant only for plastic with one wheel, or copper/aluminum with the other wheel it comes with. However, I saw a reviewer mention they used it to cut thick steel fence posts, and other cutters intended for steel are twice the price, so I thought I'd give it a try.The copper cutting wheel had no problem cutting my steel pipe. I'm guessing that if you tried to use this cutter for steel a lot the blade would wear quickly, but for occasional use I think it's fine. I searched for awhile to see if there were cutting blades you could buy that were intended for steel, but I think Rigid doesn't market them for this cutter as they want you to buy a more expensive one. On an external web site I did find a blade called E-4546 aka 33190 which the site claims is meant for steel/stainless steel and it also claims it will fit this cutter, but I couldn't verify that on Rigid's web site. However, the back of the packaging that comes with the cutter does mention it works with E-4546 (Cat. No. 33190) for cutting stainless steel (it doesn't say steel, but I would guess it's fairly equivalent).I've only cut one pipe so far but the cut lined up after one revolution by simply tightening the cutter firmly. That was not the case with a pipe cutter I rented last year - I had to torque the cutter in a particular way on the first rotation to get the cut to line up.One thing I don't like about this cutter is the knob you turn to tighten it. My hands sweat and I have to squeeze the knob very tightly to make it tighten which hurts my hand after a bit. I much preferred the sliding bar of the previous cutter I rented that gives you leverage to tighten it easily. The "X-CEL" pin that holds the cutter wheel in is a neat idea. It's basically a pin with two spring-loaded ball bearings on the end that prevent the pin from slipping out. It's similar to the spring-loaded ball bearings that hold a socket onto most socket wrenches.Since they also call the knob an "X-CEL" knob I was expecting to be able to remove the knob with some sort of similar pin in order to get at the cutting wheel stored in the knob, but instead you seem to need to remove a Phillips-head screw to get at the spare cutting wheel. That's rather annoying. The instructions that come with the cutter are pretty vague. For example, it says "Open cutter by depressing release nut". They don't have a diagram or description of what they mean by a release nut. Luckily the tool is fairly simple and I think they mean for you to press down on a black lever near the knob that lets the cutting wheel slide forward and back.I also found there's a short blade you can fold out of the top of the tool much like a pocket knife blade. The manual doesn't mention it so I have no idea what the intended purpose is.4Worked as designedThe cutting wheel it comes with is for copper and aluminum. It actually did cut 8 SS 12G fence post before breaking. Purchased the correct cutting wheel for SS and it cut the rest of the 26 posts as one would expect.4Mucu better than the Lennox Mucu better than the Lennox. They say never walk but that is definitley a false claim. These cutters have never walked. I only work on copper, run copper, burn copper everyday all day. You will like the weight and the ability to cut 2 1/2" while spinning cutter with two fingers while the other guy has to man handle thier crappy cutters and makes you wait on top of the ladder for a 6' piece of copper. 5Great cutting tool for chain link postsAfter contemplating a multitude of post cutting options, all of which would send sparks into a very dry mountain area, I decided to order this product to cut the steel chain link fence posts. I am so happy I spent the money on this tool. It cuts amazingly well even with the blade that comes on the tool. I have the replacement blade for steel posts ordered but am getting great results with the stock one. The cut surface is very clean too. I highly recommend this tool especially if you live in fire prone area such as us. Great product and worth the price !!!5Will not cut stainless! The RIGID 152 comes with a wheel that only cuts plastic. So far as I have been able to determine, there is no cutting wheel available for this tool that will cut anything harder than copper.2Another Superior Ridgid Cutting ToolThis Ridgid 31642 Model 152 tubing cutter was indispensable to me as I had to replace a few sections of top rail on my badly damaged chain link fence; I had to work alone, and I could not have done it without this tool. It cut through the damaged sections of 1 3/8 inch galvanized top rail very quickly, and though it is a very powerful cutting tool, it is compact enough so that I could "spin" it around the rails without having to disconnect them completely from the fence fabric thereby enabling me to install the new top rails and then re-connect the fabric to the new rails. I also have the super heavy duty Ridgid 32820 Model 2-A I/8 to 2 inch pipe cutter, but it was too big and heavy for me to try to use alone, although it is an awesome tool .5Precision Cut for larger diameter pipe.I use this for cutting 1" to 2-1/2" copper L. This particular design of pipe cutter is the best IMO. The cast Aluminum is lightweight, rigid (no pun intended), and makes consistent cuts. These are expensive for a reason - they're the best ones out there.5Sweet Awesome! Works great!! 5Pricey but good to have I used this to cut a loft bed and it performed flawlessly. 5Cuts Galvanized Conduit Like a CharmThis thing cut Galvanized Conduit like a charm. Though you should make sure that you have a good pipe vise for larger pipes. Please note that keeping the blade only snug is necessary to cut pipe with this cutter, don't over tighten!5Basic tool you should have in your box (plumbing)If you re checking this review out, just know that this thing is ol reliable . If you re just starting out plumbing, or fixing things around your house, you re going to eventually need this, even just for brass tubing under a sink. It s called a tubing cutter, it cuts multiple types of materials so I know there are different trades that use this tool as well.5Worked perfectly for cutting 2-3/8" STEEL pipe, 16 gauge. Highly recommend.I bought this pipe cutter to cut 2-3/8" Steel pipe used for a chain link fence. I was skeptical at first, but it performed flawlessly cutting 16 gauge steel pipe. I used the default copper cutting wheel that came on the unit. The spring release is a great feature. The wheel tracked very well and when I rotated around the pipe it fell right back into the channel it had started.I believe the key is to not turn the knob in too much at the start. Take your time and don't over tighten the knob. Took about 5 minutes to cut through the steel pipe. Left a nice, clean cut all the way around. There were some burrs on the inside but that's easy to fix.I cut 11 steel pipes and the blade wheel looks brand new still. No dings or nicks in the blade at all. I'm confident this will give me years of good use.5
