Customer Reviews

This switch works great and I was able to make it fit in ... I bought this to replace a on off switch from a Clausing drill press I bought at an auction. This switch works great and I was able to make it fit in the original switch location. It was not a like for like exchange. The switch is bulky. It will fit in a large/ deep electrical box. This drill press is 25 years old and the switch location is inside of a cast iron head and the screw holes were 1/8" off. Since I could not shave an 1/8" off the plastic switch body and I didn't want to drill and tap new holes in the 3/4" thick casting, I disassembled the switch and elongated the metal mounting bracket holes allowing enough room to shift the switch body down. Reassembled and all is well. If the switch body was a little more compact I would have given it five stars. This switch is not as durably made as the original switch but it costs many times less so its a winner. 4DOES NOT fit standard electrical box without user supplied screws Does not fit standard electrical box, unless you replace the #8 machine screws with #6 (you know, the STANDARD mounting screw for electrical devices). Other than that, ok... and the requirement to screw the buttons to the switch using the aforementioned screws, it appears to be a simple snap action double pole switch. It also has a very strong action so you really have to mean it when you switch it on. 3NO INSTRUCTIONS The lack of instructions had me trip the breaker several times. I had to actually disassemble the switch to figure out how to wire it. I am not an electrician, but I am pretty familiar with circuits. What I forgot going into this was this is a double pole, single throw (DPST) switch. Most switches (your bedroom light switch, for example) are single pole, single throw, involving only one leg of the two wire circuit. Why this is important is that there are four connection points instead of the usual two, and that is where I went wrong. I assumed (which we should never do) that the circuits would run from right to left. I assumed that because there were tiny little words imprinted on either side, LOAD and LINE. So I connected the incoming (from the plug) to LINE and the wires to the junction box where I was going to plug in my router and dust collector to LOAD. The microsecond that I tried the switch, my breaker tripped. I assumed the LOAD (my 2hp router and 5hp shop vac) were too much for the circuit so I reset the breaker, unplugged the vac, and tried again. Instant trip. I unplugged the router and plugged in an LED test light. Virtually no load. Hit the switch, instant trip of the breaker again. Now I assumed the switch had a defect so I proceeded to take it apart. Happily, it was held together with four screws, and came apart readily. Immediately, I saw the problem. The switch actuated a double-poled rocker that connected two sets of contact points. Unfortunately, I had wired the switch across the points so rather than continuing the current when I actuated the switch, I was actually bringing the two sets of wires into contact with each other, creating an instant short. Putting the switch back together was a fiddly mess because of four ball bearings on which the rockers rode, and which were apparently enjoying their new-found freedom and did not want to return to the rockerswitch drudgery. Anyway, I got it put back together, and it works wonderfully. The little schematic drawing packaged with the switch did not illuminate the correct installation procedure, the way that a tersely worded note "Connect the hot and common of the incoming circuit to the bottom of the switch and the outgoing corresponding wires to the top of the switch" would have. 4A fine switch as a fair price - Mounting is NOT a problem. I purchased this switch to replace a blown one on my Delta jointer. I hesitated due to the negative reviews regarding the mounting problems some people seem to have. I experienced none of these. The switch fit the original switch housing without trouble - a standard electrical box mounted on the jointer. The mounting was a small amount out of true, but not significant and the screws fit just fine. I will post a picture in a later update. Do not believe everything you read - mounting is not a problem. 5Works Very Well I like the large color coded buttons. The switch works well and the engagement is nice and positive. As others have griped, the screws supplied are not the standard #6-32 we use in the US, but if you are working with this kind of switch, you probably have some of those laying around anyway. And you have to trim back a small tab on top of the switch itself to be able to fit it in the box. That and it is slightly smaller than the box Amazon recommends. It does cover the box, but it sits just to the inside of the edges of the box. 4Great switch - good luck in finding a box to fit. This is a high quality, well-made switch that I bought to replace the switch on my drill press. The review would be five stars except for the difficulty in finding a box to fit it. I wanted to mount the switch in a box where it would be more convenient and safer rather than in the drill press body where the original switch was mounted. I finally got a cast aluminum deep exterior box that almost fit, but then had to grind the inside to get the switch to fit in the box. Works great now, but it was a two-hour job. 3Buy with the Taymac SD350S weatherproof box I changed out the control switch on my Powermatic 143 Bandsaw with this switch and box when I replaced the existing three phase motor with a single phase motor. The new switch and box were mounted on an existing external plate bolted to the saw, replacing the existing control switch. I drilled a couple of holes in the rear wall of the Taymac box to mount the box on the existing plate. The only other work necessary was to grind the small stamped plates provided with the Taymac box. These stamped steel plates span across the box both top and bottom and provide the internal mounting surface for the switch to the Taymac box. The switch is just a little too tall to mount between the stamped plates, but a little grinding with my grinder took care of that. The switch fits nicely and now my bandsaw is fitted with a control switch exactly like the rest of my shop equipment. Perfect!I read the other reviews on this switch and the Taymac box and found them to be very helpful. You will need #6-32 one inch long screws to mount the cover and switch to the box. The screws provided with the switch were too big to work on the Taymac box. Thanks to the other reviewers! 5Nice switch, arrived damaged The switch itself is great. Take note that it is definitely a firm push, so no accidentally turning something on or off in the shop when this switch is in play. Arthritis will prevent one from using this switch without a lot of effort and some discomfort. As long as the very stiff throw isn't an issue for you, I'd recommend this switch. My only gripe (and it is a gripe not a complaint) is that the switch arrived damaged. Nothing that prevents its use or that affects the cosmetic appearance of the side showing after installation, but small pieces of the switch housing on the back side of the switch have been broken off at some point by rough handling in shipping or storage. Of course this is usually just luck of the draw, but when I order more we'll see if it is an actual issue. 4Product design errors, but the switch works... POWERTEC 71008 110/220V Single Phase On/Off SwitchThis switch is an example of a product the manufacturer never attempted to install themselves. If they had, they would have immediately recognized some serious issues:- the two screws that hold the cover to the switch mechanism are metric and don t fit weatherproof (or steel) boxes, which are threaded for #6 screws.- the switch mechanism is too deep to fit a standard 2" deep weatherproof box without modification.- the plastic cover is too soft if you over tighten a mounting screw, it will countersink into the cover itself. On the plus side, it s not expensive, I was successful in mounting it, and it works. There are no doubt many ways mount this switch other than how I did it...This switch cover plate is sized to be mounted on a weather proof box; a metal box is stronger than plastic. You ll need a metal weatherproof box extender for the switch to actually fit (available via Amazon/Lowes/Home Depot etc.). Search Amazon for: TayMac SE000SAn extender will add 1" depth to the box, providing room for this switch and its wiring. Attach the extender to the weatherproof box with the 4 provided #6 x 1.25" screws. Feed wires through proper electrical connectors/clamps screwed into the box s threaded hole(s). Securely attach the (metal) box to your tool.Remove the switch s two mounting screws, lock washers, and nuts and replace with 1" long #6 machine screws with small washers to spread the pressure on the soft switch cover.Attach the ground wire to the metal box s green screw (if it s a plastic box, just cap the ground lead). The switch itself is not grounded, since it has a plastic body. Connect the incoming hot (110v) or hots (220v) to the LINE terminal/s and the tool wire/s to the corresponding LOAD terminal/s. Screw the switch and the cover onto the box extension using 1" #6 (with washers) machine screws.Refer to photo for this switch installation. 3This is the same review as the paddle switch version ... This is the same review as the paddle switch version (they are the same switch gear with different covers)-- The switch itself seems OK, but it gets only three stars because it doesn't fit any NEMA standard electrical enclosure. First you must get an extra-deep box, and then you must make your own mounting provisions. In my case, I bought a stainless steel outlet cover and cut out the center to match the switch silhouette, then replaced its two metric mounting/assembly screws with a clumsy collection of 25-mm long screws, extra nuts, and washers as spacers to hold the switch paddle to the switch body and also properly spaced to the cut-away outlet cover. Shouldn't be so hard, one wonders what the designers could have been thinking. No experience yet on how the switch gear will hold up under use. 3
