    Good replacement, not for first time bluray owner If you already have a Blu-Ray and are looking to replace it, this is all you need. If you don't already have an existing drive, this is NOT for you. You'll need cables, screws(sometimes brackets) and software. Nearly 100% of all BDs sold will come encrypted, and VLC nor any other windows software will be able to play them. You'll need to purchase Nero, Cyberlink or some other product. There is NO FREE OPTION to play encrypted bluray disc! If you already had a blu-ray drive you likely have all the software and hardware you need. If this is your first bluray drive, spend the extra $7 to $10 and get the retail version.The drive itself is a solid performer and will work well. I needed a drive to rip BR and occasionally burn CDs and DVDs. This drive reads and writes at solid speeds. I recommend that you upgrade the firmware after getting it installed to reduce errors. 4Good drive but too deep for my Lenovo m82 SFF case. I like Pioneer drives and have used them for years, mostly without issue. I picked this drive as it was cheaper than the other drives here. What I failed to take into account was that the Pioneer drive is about 10mm longer than the DVD-R drive it was replacing in a Lenovo M82 SFF chassis. The stock DVD-R is 170mm, the Pioneer measures out to 180mm which is about the maximum clearance for the drive bay without cables. With the cables there is no way to make the drive fit. There just isn't enough room even if you use 90 deg adapters for the cables. The extra length most likely isn't a problem in a bigger case but if you have a small form factor PC from Lenovo or Dell, you might want to make sure of your current drive's depth before you buy.I did do a test burn before I swapped the drives back so I could close the case and it worked just fine. I expect it would perform just as well as my previous Pioneer DVD-R drives though I had to return it to get the slightly smaller LG drive (165mm depth). Hopefully the LG will not only fit in my case but work as well as Pioneer drives had for me in the past. 4Works fine but... My review is going to focus on one area that I was not happy with: CD ripping! Ripping is fine as long as the CD is in goo condition BUT I rip lots of audio books to play on my phone and when the disc's are scratched I gets lots of skips in the final mp3 file. Here's my problem... my 9 year old LiteOn brand DVD burner will rip the same scratched CD's without a single error. I realize very few people rip CD's these days so I still rated the drive 4 stars but if you do look for a drive that is good at it. By the way the Lite On brand drive does not read blue ray so maybe when they add Blue ray you get a lower quality regular CD laser or reading ability?Have not played any Blueray discs yet. 4It's also great for ripping videos from other regions (non US regions) I bought this drive to rip my Blu-Ray collection for my Plex server. First off it rips Blu-Ray very fast. I am using it on a Windows 10 and works flawlessly. It's also great for ripping videos from other regions (non US regions). It's a very quiet drive which is also another bonus.Sorry to say I didn't buy this drive for burning purposes although I like the idea of being able to do so if I choose. So I cannot comment on that aspect of it's performance.So if you are looking for a great ripper this is it. 5Get the BD-209M instead After putting this drive through some use, I prefer my BDR-209M, aka the 2209/BDR-2209/BDR-209UBK to this drive, the 209D. I had problems with it right out of the box. I attempted to test it in an external enclosure, but that was no go. Discs would repeatedly fail to finish burning, dropping to 0.0x and never resuming. The drive would have to be powered off and back on to terminate ImgBurn. The 2209 I put in the same enclosure did not do this earlier in the year. However, that was on the old 1.34 firmware. I updated this 209D to 1.50 in the enclosure before testing it. So, it could be a firmware issue, but I doubt it.The drive also leaves behind a funny ozone/chlorine smell to discs when ejected after burning.BD-RE SL and DL,when Verified in ImgBurn, will begin Verifying at a higher rate then drop to 2x for a significant period of time before resuming at a higher rate of speed. The 2209 does not do it this way.8x Ritek DVD+RW will fail to Verify sometimes even after it has just formatted the disc. Inserting these same discs that have just failed in the 2209 with the same image and burning software will then pass. So, the 209D apparently has some issues.I can't say for sure if this is just a bad unit I got, because for everything else, it has worked fine. However, for all these issues I've mentioned that weren't present in the 209M, I would recommend forgoing this drive, the 209D, and going for the 209M. It costs more, but it also does more. It supports BD XL and TL media and M-Disc media, which the 209D does not. I've been using 209M's for years with relatively few issues. So, for my next drive, I won't be trying another 209D. I'll get another 209M, and I recommend you do the same thing.EDIT 05-01-2018: I changed my review to I hate it. Eventually removed it and replaced it with a 2209 which I know works well. Got too many bad writes and ImgBurn Verify failures. Either I got a bad drive or this drive itself is just junk out of the box. Either way, I still don't recommend the 209 and would recommend you get the 2209 instead. Of course, it failed just 15 days after the window of returned had closed, so I'm stuck with a $70 piece of trash. Hence another reason I don't recommend you gamble on this drive.EDIT 2018-06-10: My experience with the drive losing communication in the enclosure I am now blaming on the enclosure. On 2 different PC's, with 2 different optical drives, and on both BD-R and DVD+RW, I've had the enclosure lose communication with the software. So, it would seem the enclosure is to blame for that particular aspect of my review. 1Well worth the price point. So far I haven't tested burning capabilities as that isn't an immediate necessity. I have however tried Bluray, DVD, and CD playback with DVD and CD being audio/video and data. No loud noise with spinning or noticeable vibration issues. In fact, it's probably quieter than my pc.First thing I did was update the firmware as it came with version 1.20 and the current (as of now) is 1.30.You can get your firmware here:http://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00001r_e.html 5Fast and Amazingly quiet! Bought this to replace an LG usb little tiny blu ray player that basically started dying after ripping ~5-6 movies. Should have just bought this and waited for the shipping, and not wasted my time with the little one. This one seems built to rip movies for dayssss. This thing is pretty fast also, all things considered. It's solid, and it's amazingly quiet! Like you can barely hear it when it's spinning at full speed. I am young and have no hearing problems and I had to put my ear 2 inches away from this thing to hear it. I've already ripped ~10 movies with this and it's still going strong (as it should be). I should be able to rip my entire collection and continue after that without any problems on this drive. There was another reviewer who said the drive was still going without any issues after 150+ movies.For anyone else looking to rip their collection, quick PSA first:**Piracy is bad, m'kay?**Now that that's out of the way, I use MakeMKV to rip, then Handbrake for Windows to encode (so the files themselves aren't ungodly huge)Enjoy! ;) 5Extremely happy with this drive Been using this drive with MakeMKV for weeks to rip my Blu Ray collection to my PC to copy to my NAS so that I can stream these videos in my house via Plex whenever I want. Has ripped 150 movies so far and haven't seen any issues yet. Extremely happy with this drive. 5Burns M-Disc DVDs,best burner on the market today This unit gives the most accurate burns on a wide range of media, both DVD and Blu-Ray, of any other unit on the market today. I was surprised to find that it also burns M-Disc DVDs just fine, and with much lower error rates than two LG burners that I have. If you want to burn M-Disc DVDs, this is the unit to have. Of course it will also burn M-Disc Blu-Ray discs, since those will work in any Blu-ray burner. It burns both with the lowest error rates of any unit I have tested. I have included a screenshot of the test results of an M-disc burned in this unit. Note that the top of the upper graph is 40. The average PIE error rate is 14, which is quite good, especially for an M-Disc. The average error rate in either of my two LG burners was over 100. If you care about the quality of your burned discs for archiving important photos or documents or for long-term disc storage, I highly recommend that you get this unit. 5Pioneer high quality ... but ... (Beware of physical size) This review is for the Pioneer BDR-209D bare drive / no useless and frustrating software.1st a word on software ...To simply play commercial Blu/DVD movie disks or any other video/audio file I use VLC (free). It works great for the beginner and has features to keep the advanced user happy. To play Blu disks you have to download and copy 2 additional files. Just do a google "VLC blu ray" search. It's very easy and straight forward. There are even detailed instructions on youtube for the really technically challenged.MakeMkv and Hand Brake (both free) allow frustration free commercial Blu / DVD movie conversion. After getting rid of all that pesky commercial code and saving to my hard drive I can then play the movie (with VLC) from my hard drive or burn to optical disk. Another viable playback option is the PAID version of Power DVD. Power DVD is more user friendly than VLC and gives a no hassle option to play directly to and external device such as a receiver without being routed through Windows. There is a HUGE difference in sound quality when playing directly to receiver. Even the latest & greatest motherboard sound chips don't come close to an AVR or decent external DAC.Now for the Pioneer:The Pioneer works better than expected upon initial install and testing. I initially purchased an LG UH12NS30 Blu Ray player / DVD writer (first one failed within 25 days, replacement defective). The "REAL WORLD" read (Rom) speed of the LG was really lacking (~2.5x-3.5x) compared to Pioneer (~7x). The LG could not successfully burn a DVD (SATA controller errors).The Pioneer burns flawlessly both Blu and DVD.The drive is very quiet when playing / copying / burning.Install: Take note that this Pioneer drive is 7.09" in length. It will not fit in some cases. I have a Cooler Master mini-tower (great case) with a mini-ATX mobo. After pre-measuring clearance I concluded it would fit, just barely. I had to remove a corner mobo mounting screw for the drive to clear.Quality of construction: The drive appears well built and solid as far as optical drives go. The eject button is easy to find by touch and has a solid feel when pushed.I rip ~6 blus per week. We'll see how long it lasts. So far so good! Great bang for the buck when on sale for $55 @ Amazon:)UPDATE 6/17/16Still going strong after ~2 yrs. Great optical drive;) 5
