Best LED bulb to replace halogen bulbs. Little to no buzzing sound.I purchased these three LED replacements for our halogen lights, here's how they compare:Philips 433227 60 Watt Equivalent SlimStyle A19 LED Light Bulb Soft White,Feit Electric - 60 Watt Replacement - Omni Directional - LED Dimmable - 3 Pack (144799)Hyperikon E26 9.5-Watt LED A19 Dimmable Bulb, 3000K, 800 Lumens, 4-PackBackstory:We wanted to replace our halogen bulbs in two bedside lamps with an LED bulb that is dimmable that takes up way less electricity. Results:Feit Electric - 60 Watt Replacement - Omni Directional - LED Dimmable - 3 Pack (144799)Purchased these first. They are dimmable, but on the lowest setting the lamp turns off and I can't turn back on without increasing the light / reducing the dimmable setting. Also there is a buzzing sound, you can hear it from about 1-2 feet away. Very faint, but you can hear it. My wife didn't care for it, but it drove me nuts.Hyperikon E26 9.5-Watt LED A19 Dimmable Bulb, 3000K, 800 Lumens, 4-PackTried these next. The buzzing sound was even louder than the Feit Electric bulbs. You can hear it from 2-3 feet away and it's clearly there.Philips 433227 60 Watt Equivalent SlimStyle A19 LED Light Bulb Soft White,Purchased these last, and the buzzing sound is there but you have to have your ear within 6 inches to hear it. I tested all of these bulbs side by side and Philips bulbs are the clear winner. With the lamp less than a foot away from me, I can't hear the buzzing sound, and they work great, and save me electricity as we desired. All in all, I would recommend the Philips bulbs as a replacement for halogen bulbs.5Still to EXPENSIVE for light bulbs, but these actually work...the 5000k are great....Difusses really wellThese work GREAT so far...but get the 5000k....the soft white of anything is not WHITE. These, you will have to get used to if you have been using the "not ready for regular USE CFL's"....CFL's are junk, (the only good ones are in the teen$ range, that's because the ballast is much higher quality) . I've been and Electrician since the late 80's and the most expensive part of a BULB is the starter(ballast in some cases) these LED's are REALLY GOOD, I have tested different bulbs through the years and these actually work...as far as dimming you have to use a good dimmer, if you install a $5 dimmer it's gonna BUZZ simple rule is the DIMMER SWITCH is where you spend some money.... I have 8 of these bulbs around for testing purposes and are used on a daily basis....the 3 in the bathroom are bright WHITE, the wife didn't know at first if she like them said they were to bright, but after a few days now she loves them....I have tried a lot of different brands of these and the PHILIPS really does work.... Very good DIFFUSION....check around on the net for pricing if you buy in larger amounts you should get a discount4Rugged Design, Great Brightness and Temperature, Some LimitationsI've never been a fan of CFL bulbs. Many don't last any longer than incandescent, and when they do burn out, you've got hazardous waste to dispose of (mercury). If you live in the cold, their warm-up time can be painfully long. Thus I'm very glad that LED bulbs are coming down in price. Granted, they are still pricey, but if this bulb lasts 18 years like it says it will, it will more than make up for that in both electricity savings and replacement costs. When I first saw this bulb, I thought it was kinda cheap-looking. The "unique" design and plastic instead of glass "bulb" makes it look like a toy, but I quickly realized this is a plus, not a minus. Like I said, CFLs contain mercury, and if you break one, you're exposing yourself to a toxic heavy metal. I suspect you could drop this bulb on the floor and it would survive. Even if it cracked, I bet it will still be functional. It should be very resistant to vibrations and jarring - a perfect bulb for your shop droplight!I find the light from the bulb more pleasant than from the CFL it replaced. It's warm and there is no 60Hz flicker that some CFLs and early LEDs produce (the cause of many a headache). It also uses about half the electricity of the CFL of similar brightness, and it fit better in my lamp. Despite the flat design, it produces omnidirectional (spherical) light. While the bulb is dimmable, it does hum and flicker on a dimmer switch. Both hum and flicker are more noticeable when dimmer vs. brighter. This is because of how dimmers work, but the bulb should have compensated for this with some simple filtering circuits.IMPORTANT NOTE FOR X10 USERS - if you use X10 home-automation modules, this bulb will not fully turn off with socketed switch lamp modules! Well, at least the older ones. This is likely due to the "sense" current that the X10 module uses to detect the presence of a bulb. It's a testament to how low-power these bulbs are, but unless you want to manually cut the sense circuit on each of your lamp switches, this bulb won't work.4Oddly shaped flat LED 'bulb' performs very well - except when dimmedThe most unusual feature of this Philips 433227 10.5-watt Slim Style LED Bulb is that it does not resemble a traditional A19 light bulb. Instead, this LED 'bulb' is flat and shaped more like a lollipop. The body is made of thick, translucent plastic that feels quite rugged. I have not done any 'drop test' with this bulb, but I'm sure it can survive a short fall without cracking.Another important feature is that: this Slim Style bulb is significantly lighter than other 60W-equivalent LED bulbs I have tested (although it is still heavier than an incandescent bulb). That means I can use it in any hanging light fixture or goose-neck lamp, for examples, without worrying too much about its added weight. The actual light source of this product consists of 26 tiny LEDs, placed around the fringe of the lollipop. At first I was skeptical that this arrangement can give out uniform illumination all round. But in actual application (when placed behind lamp shade, for example) the light it produces is close to omni-directional. Its color temperature is 2700K, same as that of most incandescent bulbs. Basically if you don't look at this LED bulb, you can't tell the difference between its light and that of a 60W A19 incandescent bulb. The power consumption is 11W according to my P4460 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor. Its power factor is PF=0.88 which is not bad, but below that of other Philips LED bulbs I have tested (for example, the Philips 429381 10.5-watt A19 LED Bulb measures 10W with PF=1.0), This gives me the impression that Philips may have designed the PFC (power factor correction) circuit to a lower standard in order to keep the cost down. The only problem I have with this Philips bulb is that: it does not work well with traditional TRIAC dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs. The bulb emits a 120Hz buzzing sound, whether the dimmer is at minimum or maximum power. Thankfully, the noise is not as LOUD as that from the Cree 9.5-Watt Warm White Dimmable LED Light Bulb, but it is still easily noticeable in a quiet room. On the other hand, when used in an ordinary (non-dimmer controlled) light fixture, the Philips bulb is completely silent.Even if noise is not a critical issue, the dimming range of this 'dimmable' bulb is too limited when compared to incandescent or other dimmable LED bulbs. With dimmer at minimum power, the Philips Slim Style still retains about 25% of its full brightness. In contrast, the Philips 432732 11W A19 LED Light Bulb is able to dim all the way down to a faint glow. See the comparison pictures I uploaded to 'Customer Images' section, and you'll notice the big difference.Bottom Line:Considering its low cost and innovative design, this Philips Slim Style LED 'bulb' is an excellent replacement for 60W incandescent bulbs. Unfortunately, I have to deduct one star from my rating because the product is prominently advertised as 'dimmable', but performs poorly when used in a dimmer-controlled light fixture.Remark:On the package it says: "Not suitable for totally enclosed fixtures". The keyword here is "totally". I won't get too worried about using it in my enclosed ceiling lights. As long as the fixture is not air-tight, it should be fine.[Update on May 29, 2014]Just tried using the Philips SlimStyle bulb in my garage door opener and it works fine. Previously I tried the Cree 9.5-Watt LED Light Bulb, but the EMI (electromagnetic interference) from that bulb is so strong that it jams the remote's radio frequency. So once I opened the garage door and the LED bulb comes on, I can no longer close the door using the remote. None of those LED bulbs carry the 'FCC' logo on them.4works greatWe've had these bulbs going in our lamps with horizontal sockets for more than 4 years without failure - some of the lamps we leave on more than 12 hours a day. Another bonus of the bulbs is that they seem to be plastic so they don't break when dropped on a hardwood floor (so far). The only glitch is that sometimes when they're screwed all the way in they don't end up horizontal in the socket - they end at an angle up to almost 90 , and when they're that far off they show below the level of the lampshade, which kind of defeats the purpose. The only solution I've found is to not screw them in tightly - back off a bit until they're horizontal but still make a good enough connection to give light without flickering. I paid 8 bucks for 2 four years ago and now they're $6.47 for one - quite a price hike way beyond inflation.5Five stars...Yes they are that good! There is a reason these bulbs are currently the number one selling LED light bulb on Amazon right now and that is because they are that good. I bought the 10 pack which means they worked out to around $8.50 per bulb. That is an unheard of price when it comes to name brand quality bulbs. I replaced the lights in my hallway, bathroom, utility room, and sun-room. What I love about LED bulbs is that when you turn them on they are bright, no waiting around for them to warm up like florescent bulbs. I am in the process of switching my entire house over to LED. This is an expensive proposition but ultimately I think it is worth getting rid of the headache inducing CFL bulbs which contain mercury.I did put four of these bulbs in my ceiling fan fixture which is controlled by an old X10 dimmer. The X10 dimmer is no longer communicating with any X10 links because I've dismantled that home automation protocol in my house. I recently switched to dimmers controlled by a Wink Hub. The beauty with the Wink Hub is that it supports multiple home automation protocols. However the old X10 dimmer does work manually and the bulbs operated flawlessly.I've been learning a lot about LED lately and there is a lot of things that you should know. For example, because a LED bulb doesn't require much power to light up, sometimes when paired with a normal old standard dimmer you may not be enough electrical draw for the LED to know that it is supposed to be off (meaning when the switch is off, the light is still on). The way to solve that problem is to purchase a new LED certified dimmer or only use the bulbs in multiples when controlled by a standard dimmer. So for example, in my ceiling fan the bulbs operate flawlessly because I have 4 bulbs in the fixture. When I tried using a non-LED certified dimmer with fixtures that only had 1 or 2 bulbs I occasionally ran into problems where the lights did not shut off. Using a certified LED dimmer of course alleviates issues with the LED bulbs blinking when they are dimmed. But even my old X10 dims the LED bulbs flawlessly and do not blink; I believe this is because the four bulbs draw enough power to make this work correctly. The last thing I want to say about these bulbs is that they appear to be very "warm" in color in comparison to other LED bulbs I've had. That is a big plus according to my wife, although that really is not that big of a deal for me.The bottom line is that I plan is to purchase more of these lights in the near future because I think they are that good.5This is the future of light bulbs!Ladies and gentlemen,As a tough critic I must say that this one of very few times, where * I * took the initiative to go into Amazon (without being begged by Amazon) and give this light bulb a blazing 5 stars! (usually i do it when I am very unhappy with a product I bought!)I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this bulb. Here is why:1) The color is beautiful - a nice rich incandescent like color - not the ugly white LED-s manufacturers think we'll use at home - we want the yellows!2) The light diffusion is the BEST i have ever seen in ANY of the LED lights I have tried. My house is ALL LED-s. ALL OF IT, so trust me when I say what I say,3) You know how you put an LED bulb inside a ceiling flushed fixture and you literally see the half that's lighting and the half that's not through the fixture - which ruins the beauty of it? - well - this is the first bulb I have come across that does NOT do that!4) The bulb's shape so innovative. It's like taking and incandescent bulb and squeezing it, making it a 2d shape (flat). You have a much better grip when screwing it into its base, and of course it's cool to the touch.5) The surface of the bulb is some kind of plastic, NOT GLASS. This means that if you accidentally drop it - it won't break like the glass one would - how cool is that? Also, for those ceiling flushed fixtures - this bulb can squeeze in so easily, since it's flat - another big advantage.6) It's dimmable and does not make any noises, neither is it flickering7) Best of all - you don't need to by these expensive hundreds of dollars built in fancy LED fixtures - now you can go back to all of the regular incandescent light fixtures and just put this one inside instead.I ordered 4 and I am going to order at least 10 more after I am done writing this review.PHILIPS - Awesome job with this product. Consider a 75W and 100W equivalents of this kind!5Very pleased with initial performancePhilips 455469 60 Watt Equivalent SlimStyle A19 LED Soft White Light Bulb, Dimmable, High CRI I now have eight of these Philips SlimStyle LED bulbs installed in my home, including 40W, 60W and 75W dimmable bulbs. They all give good, even light. Four are installed in fixtures with dimmer circuits. There is no discernible noise at normal operating distance, whether in a regular fixture or on a dimmer. When installed in a circuit on a dimmer, a very faint whine can be heard, but only if you get up very close to the lamp. I have one bulb installed in a dimmable lamp close to my bed, where the sound is virtually unnoticeable. I especially like that the bulb surround is plastic rather than glass, which is an added safety factor. I have only one (minor) negative comment: these bulbs don't dim as much as regular incandescent bulbs, and perhaps other LED or CFL bulbs, but the dimming is adequate for me. Only time will tell how long they will last, but I've had good performance from other Philips products. I just wish Philips would make this bulb in a three-way configuration.5Very Warm lightThese are great lights. I was a bit worried about the unorthodox shape that they have, but I really kind of like it now that it's installed. I had to be a little bit careful when installing them because I really wanted them to all be aligned since they're sort of flat. The quality of the light was surprising to me, it's somewhat more orange looking than other soft white lights, definitely warmer than I'm used to, but everything looks great in the light these produce. Given that the light temperature is so much warmer than most other lights i've seen I would try to avoid putting these in an area with other soft white lights.5Top Pick - Nothing To Loose Everything To GainVery nice warm color temperature. It is very close in color temperature to the older incandescent bulbs. It has a strong build so I expect it to be much more durable than the thin walled glass bulbs. It's got a unique lollipop shape wont roll off a table and stacks better than round bulbs. it lets you screw it out of and into deep sticky sockets with a good grip. Philips SlimStyle 60W LED light bulb have a low wattage that uses about 83% less energy than incandescent light bulbs, but with the same light quality and many advantages.ProsInstant Light (No need to wait like for CFL bulbs to get brighter)Innovative Flat Design,Wont roll off table and easy to stack, or to screw in or outNo Mercury (Much Safer Alternative to CFL's that do have Mercury and easier to dispose of)No Glass like incandescent bulbsLong Life 22.8 Years (claim based off an average use of 3 hours per day, 7 days per week.)Energy-Efficient Low 10.5 watts used for max 60 watt outputBrand Name Bulb (Philips Family of LED Light Bulbs)ConsA Crackling Noise when you shut off a bulb (a quick one second noise)Claims of Noise when dimming the light, although does not apply to those who don't dim their lights like meAll in all its a great bulb very reliable , wont break easily with a slight room for improvement but ill take it anyways. If you can get them for $3.97 or even under $5 a bulb ( $3.48 is the lowest amazon has gone on this ever according to CCC but dont expect to see that again soon) I would try at least one to test, you may love them. I did and came back for more !!5
