I am legally blind due to a rare eye disease and my world ends at about 3 from my short nose (I often wish I was Pinocchio) but that not being the case I am always looking for something to aid my vision. Magnification is a great aid but most products on the market cost over $600. I am traveling to China in a few months and I was talking to my traveling partner about how I would really like to have something that could magnify things close up as well as at a distance. He suggested that I use binoculars. I said that they would not work at a close distance since they have a focal range usually from 20 feet or so to infinity I will bring a pair for distance but really would like to find something that would work close up. He told me about these great binoculars that have a focal length of 20 INCHES to infinity. When I received them I ran out right away and my world changed! I am able to see flowers, insects and can still use them for distance viewing. They are compact, light and easy to carry. They focus easily and have good quality optics. If they can bring a whole new world to a person with 20/700 vision just imagine what they can do for you with normal vision. One more thing they do not break the bank the cost is more than reasonable.Buy them use them and PLEASE take care of your eyes. Vision is a precious gift that can all to easily go away. 5Best Gift for myself and friends in Distant Lands These are great binoculars for viewing everything from distant california condors to close up preying mantis. Very light on the neck, and water resistant in a light rain or humid environment. I took two pair to the jungles of Ecuador last month and ended up giving them to the National Park Guards there because the were so excited to see their park at high magnification! They are so affordable I'm sure I will give these away as well... 5For the birds (and butterflies, too) These are really nice, lightweight small binoculars with a very short focusing distance. It's ideal for watching birds that come to my patio bird feeders. I'm hoping for some nice hummingbird viewing in the summer. The optics are quite good, focusing is smooth, and the body is well designed and seems quite sturdy. Although I purchased these largely for close viewing, they seem fine for distance (birds in trees) observations. The only down-side is that the case lacks a strap, but it does have belt loops, so when I take it outside I should be able to rig something up. The case itself is soft, and seals with a Velcro flap, 5Excellent tool for museums and nature; do get the insurance. These are wonderful. But don't drop them. I dropped mine just once, at Calakmul, but that was enough to loosen the oculars excessively and so I've had to buy a new set, this time purchasing the insurance. They are lightweight, focus close and at distance. The distance function is as good as any moderately priced binocular. The close up function is especially useful for looking at flowers, mosses, ferns and so forth without all of that bending down that used to be so easy to do. I also found that they are splendid for use in museums where you can examine brush strokes up close, see small items in detail that are behind glass, and so forth. Also they work well for examining insect life and the papilion de nuit on your back porch with the light on at night. So, yes wonderful, but yes, pay the $8.00 per year for the insurance. 5Great binos for looking at butterflies Great binos for looking at butterflies. Also work well enough for birds that are nearby (not good for seeing far away, such as for waterfowl on a lake). I am actually very impressed with the quality of these optics for the price. Also nice that they are small and light weight. By far the best pair of small binoculars that I have ever used. 5The best lightweight binos you can buy These are the perfect binoculars. The best pair is the pair that you actually have with you, and these are super lightweight, very easy to focus with one hand, and very ergonomic. The picture quality is crystal clear and bright. They don't inhibit you when you're on the trail and the close focus is incredible-- being able to check out a butterfly or newt from a couple of feet away is amazing and keeps you from going off trail to get a closer look. These are what you want if you find yourself constantly wishing you had binoculars with you, because these won't hurt your neck, won't get in the way, don't take up much space in your pack, and therefore you're much more likely to actually have them with you. Highly recommended. 5The ultimate botanical, butterfly and backpacking binoculars! We learned about these from Betty Gatewood during a class she gave at the 2018 Shenandoah Wildflower Weekend. Betty does exquisite flower illustrations ranging from simple journaling to rigorous botanical illustration. She needs to see what she is drawing VERY clearly. She is used to critical viewing, and can tell when a tool is above average. There are three big advantages to these: 1) crisp, clear, undistorted image and colors; 2) small, light, easily packed size; 3) ability to focus just about at the end of ones fingertips!Without #1 the other two really don't matter. But the image IS right up there. Pentax used a "porro" prism setup instead of the more popular "roof" prism design. This means the glass has more joints that moisture can seep into. Pretty sure Pentax thought of that... it feels VERY well sealed! But this also means that the light has a less tortured path through the glass, which help the clarity and color correctness. This also means that the far end of the glass (the "objective" end) can have lenses closer together, which allows a closer focus without the feeling of going cross-eyed.How important is the close focus? A butterfly won't settle at all if you get very close. But if you are three or four feet away a settled butterfly will stay put until the reason it landed goes away. An eight times magnification of a butterfly at four feet is a sight to behold! You can see details of wing patterns, antenae, legs, etc. that you would normally have to use a magnifying glass for on one that was dead.Folks who love looking at flowers in national parks and gardens know there is a "do not pick" policy. With the close focus you can see such flowers BETTER than if you held them in your hand... without having to bend over! And all this comes in a small light package. No, ultralight backpackers need not apply. This isn't THAT light. But it DOES pack easily in the brain or outer pocket of a pack, and weighs less than a lot of other FAR less capable glasses. This has to be the the ultimate botanical, butterfly, and backpacking binocular! 5I love these little binoculars I love these little binoculars. I can't keep them though, I end up giving them to my binocularless friends. Lightweight with good optics, they are amazing for looking a butterflies and insects. I will buy again *(still have a few friends without binoculars) 5Easy and simple focusing system I was introduced to these binoculars when taking a bird-watching class. I already had some inexpensive "permanent focus" binos, and these Pentax binoculars were a revelation! Crisp depth of field for the sharpest images make these the choice for bird/animal watching. Easy and simple focusing system, with retractable eye cups for eyeglass wearers. Can't beat these binoculars for the price! 5Good Bins, but not as durable as claimed The first pair I bought, I gave 5 stars. Unfortunately, they only lasted about 4 years when a prism in the eye piece became loose, so they couldn't be focused. This is common with binoculars, but is general due to being dropped or banged, so not covered by the guarantee. I've taken good care of them, so it may mean they aren't as sturdy as the larger pairs. Obviously, I liked them enough to try a second time.As butterfly binoculars, they are excellent. You can easily count the colorful scales on a butterfly's wing with them. They are light weight and compact, so easy to carry. However, These do not make good birding or forest binoculars though, having such a small objective (8.5 x 21 = magnification x objective which is the size of the lens opening) you need very good lighting conditions or the subject will be a bit too dark to pick up all the detail. I would still recommend them for butterflying, wildflowers or to carry as a back up. 4
