Customer Reviews

Best electronic hearing protection I've ever used. Much better than Howard leight impact pro and impact sport.Best electronic hearing protection I've ever used. Much better than Howard Leight impact pro and impact sport.I have bought Howard Leight Impact Pro first. It is good for gun shot protection, but too bulky. When using with shotgun, once the impact pro felt off because gun stock push it over. Make my right ear ringing so bad. I need something more slim. However, I still keep it for pistol shooting.Next, I bought Howard Leight Impact Sport. It is slim and no problem when shooting long gun stock. However, the sound protection is not good. The first time I used it, the gun shot from nearby shooters still loud. After the first time using it, my ears was still ringing for week. I decided to go further with other brands. I sold this pair to my friend. Finally, I decided to buy Peltor Sport Tactical 300. It is the best of all three. Sound proof is perfect. Conversation voice is clear and crisp. Protection from gun shot is excellent. Worth paying the price twice of Howard Leight to protect your permanent hearing loss that cannot be recovered.I choose 300 over 500 because I do not need bluetooth and 300 is cheaper. Worth the trial.Strongly Recommended. 5Add the HY80 pads and you're in for a treat.Last night was my first night to hunt with these protectors. I listened to one (or more) reviewers who suggested changing the pads to the HY80 gel pads. Changing the pads is as easy as popping out the plastic ring from the protectors and then snapping in the new HY80 with rings (no need to peel off the adhesive contact).I put them on, turned them on, and adjusted them to where it felt like I was hearing the ambient sounds (frogs, birds, insects) at the same level as without them and then...forgot they were on! They were very comfortable. I've shot with them before, but last night I wore them for over 6 hours and literally forgot a couple times that I had them on. In fairness, I never tried wearing them for an extended time with the "factory" pads; maybe they'd be fine, too.The controls for volume and power are easy to access. As a note for potential buyers: I decided to get the 300's instead of the 500's because I didn't need BlueTooth connectivity. However, in hindsight, I probably should have gotten the BT units (assuming they'd BT to my phone). I could listen to music while I try not to die of boredom waiting on the coyotes to cross my fields. FWIW. 5mixed feelings5 stars for the unit with the electronic filtering part turned OFF4 stars for the fit, comfort and folded size (though it feels as if I'd break it whenever I fold it, those wires look like a design from the 60s)2 stars for the electronic filtering turned ON, especially if there is no or very low background noise. As in this environment the Peltor adds its own assault of nearly unbearable high pitched noise.(My hearing is quite sensitive and I hear that same noise from many noise canceling headphones from Bose or Philips; I use Sony noise canceling headphones which use a digital technology that avoids the feedback frequency from the microphone and electronics; so if you have no problems using any of the Bose noise canceling headphones, you might like these Peltor ones; if you need Sony ones to not hear a high pitch electronic sound then stay away from these).I've not yet used them on the gun range, I hope the noise filtering technology helps there - otherwise I'll only use them in the OFF position or they go in the trash 3Great set of Hearing Protectors. These are the best. I had the Peltor 6s and the Howard Leight. The 6s were OK, but were always running down the batteries. It was too easy to inadvertently turn them on. Changing batteries were also a pain on the 6s. The Howard Leight had two issues. First, they didn't seal well and let in ambient sounds. Second, the electronics felt too slow to cut amplification. I can't measure this but they felt louder the 6s. A gunshot is 3 to 5 milliseconds, and Howard Leight indicates the response time is in milliseconds. So, the earliest part of the gunshot is being amplified. I could hear this. A friend has the MSA digitals. These are very good, but no better than the Sport Tactical 300. The specs suggest the NNR of these is better than the MSA. A side by side comparison doesn't seem to support this. They are about the same in an unscientific at the range comparison. The electronics of these are better than the MSA. The MSA takes longer to recover amplification after a shot. These recover faster and block amplification seemingly instantaneously. The MSA is also instantaneous in blocking sound. Build quality seems OK. The MSA might be slightly better based on visual comparison. These are plenty good enough for me. I tend to take care of equipment. Given these are half the price of the MSA, I think they are a great buy. 5Best Hearing Protection for the money.I have profound hearing loss (over 60%). My hearing Dr. (an avid shooter himself) recommends nothing less than 30 db NR. Passive systems, however, with recommended 30 db NR render me completely deaf. While on a range under the direction of a Range Officer, that's unacceptable. The Peltor product offers a high level of NR coupled with voice enhancement. It allows me hear the Range Officer's commands, while protecting me from further hearing loss due to gun fire. Also, their size/shape is conducive to proper cheek weld with shoulder fired weapons. I've used them while exposed to .308 rifle fire in an outdoor range setting, and found the Peltor product fully protected my hearing while amplifying the spoken word of the Range Officer. NR rating and electronic noise blocking tech for this product may not be sufficient for indoor range use, as gun blast tends to be much more pronounced. I've found that when used indoors while voice enhancement/noise blocking feature is engaged, gun blast from .45 ACP and 9mm remains uncomfortable. The db spike from a short barreled.357 mag. can hit 165 db, overwhelming anything made, unless you double up with ear plugs. That's from a guy who's lost over half his hearing. Recommend electronic voice enhancement/noise blocking feature be turned off when used indoors. 5Great Headset but No LED Charging Indication If Using the Lith-Ion BatteryThese work great. Auto shutoff to save the battery. Multiple modes. Comfortable. Compact. Powered by two AA batteries or optional Lithium Ion battery pack. Optimized for human voice. Very sophisticated. My current favorite.I like them so much I purchased a US006-1 case LTGEM for Howard Leight Impact Sport OD Electric Earmuff Case, Carrying Travel Storage Bag with Mesh Pocket for Accessories and the optional Lith-Ion rechargeable battery. 3M ALPHA1100 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery Pack for 3M WorkTunes Wireless, Peltor Sport Tactical 300 and Tactical 500 Hearing Protectors. Both fit perfectly. One problem: both the headphone's and the battery's manual say that an LED should blink on this Model 300 Tactical headset during charging of the lith-ion battery and become solid after fully charged.I plugged the headset into multiple USB chargers and cords, but no LED blinked. I called 3M Peltor product support. They told me to send it back and gave me a prepaid RMA. They called back shortly afterward and told me the manual was incorrect. The Model 300 does not have an LED indicator. I guess you just plug it in overnight and hope for the best.So I should not have sent it in. They are sending me a new headset (though nothing was wrong with the old one) and a credit for a new battery as they for some reason don't want to send me the battery. What a pain.Bottom line: it's a great headset and the lith-ion battery works, but has no charging indication. 5Worked great but interfered with getting a good rifle cheek weldI was impressed with these and agree with all of the positive reviews. I ordered them specifically to be able to clearly hear call outs during match competitions at my local shooting range while still providing hearing protection without having to bother with them. They were great for this purpose and seemed to work just as advertised. Having said this, I'm returning them anyway because I found it difficult to get a good rifle cheek weld with them on. It can be done, but not without the headphones contacting the stock and I found this to be distracting. That's to be expected with any over-the-ear muffs, so I can't fault the product. The ear cups do have small cutouts and rubber bumpers to help with this, but I didn't find these to help all that much. For pistol shooting or other environments with sharp impact noise, I'm sure these would be fine, but I'm back to my low-tech inside-the-ear plugs. 5Be careful regarding fitThe reviews of this item rightly give it high marks for quality, sound control etc. One review mentioned that the unit fits tight on the top of the head and unfortunately that proved true for me. I wear normal size head gear (somewhere between regular and large) but these muffs were very tight at the top of my head and that is with them extended to the max. For someone with a regular or small head they would be fine but for me they were painful after about 10 minutes on the range. Wearing a hat with this would be out of the question. I also had significant difficulty installing the batteries (Amazon batteries) and that is very unusual for any type of electronic gear. 3Best pair of earmuffs I own so far. Not as comfortable as othersWhen it comes to electronic earmuffs, the three most important characteristics are the NRR protection level, the clarity of sound and the comfort when wearing them for a long period of time. The Peltor Tac 300 are rated at 24 NRR and they do a great job indoors and outdoors for up to 45 caliber. They have good sound quality (more on this below) and although they are comfortable and don't irritate my ears, they have strong hard rubber as a headband and that makes them uncomfortable on the top of the head if I put them on for more than a couple of hours. Comfort is the reason I gave them only 4 stars but note that comfort varies from one individual to another and you may find them more comfortable than I do. You can always purchase a headband wrap and the 3M HY80 Gel pads (3M Peltor Camelback Gel Sealing Rings) to make them even more comfortable and seal your ears better when you put the safety glasses on because the gel padding will conform around the glasses arms. But these add-ons will raise the overall cost by a lot. I did purchase the Gel pads and found them to be high quality, very soft and surprisingly don t seem to cause my ears to sweat when I wear them for a prolonged period of time (2 to 3 hours).I purchased the Peltor Tac 300 because I was looking for better quality electronic earmuffs that will protect my hearing and allow me to have conversations with other competitors while we wait for our turn. I also own the popular Howard Leight Impact Pro (30 NRR) and Howard Leight Impact Sport (22 NRR). I call the Howard Leight popular because they are priced well and I see many people around me wearing them at indoor and outdoor pistol competitions. I have some comparison information later in this review. The reason I own many different pairs is because I have a hearing impairment (hereditary not from shooting) and cannot hear anything from one ear which means that I have to protect my one working ear at all cost so I am always looking for a better pair of earmuffs. Here are some things you may want to know:- They do not amplify sounds and at the maximum volume setting the sound level is about the same as you would get with naked ears.- Using the default settings, they offer good clarity of sound for speech and I don t find myself looking for the volume controls or leaning towards the person that speaks in order to hear what they are saying.- Releasing the slide of a pistol triggers the sound cut off although it is not harmful to hearing and this also happens if you just pull the slide open on a S&W Victory 22 which is not loud at all but it appears that metallic sounds trigger the suppression at any level.- They have a single power button located on the back side of the right ear opposite to the microphone and you must hold it in for 3 seconds until you hear the announcement Power On or Power Off . This is somewhat annoying because it is just enough time to start wondering if you pressed the button hard enough and you also have to hold that button waiting for the announcement when you just want to get them off your head. There is no visual indicator to check if they are on or off.- There is a setup mode where you can adjust the following functions:o Adaptive Suppression Time: When On, it will provide the fastest suppression time possibleo Surround Sound Filtering: When On, it filters background noises giving priority to speecho Auto Power Off: You can select between 2 or 4 hourso Dosimeter/Limiter: When limiter is selected the audio input will not be allowed to exceed 82db- You can connect your phone using a 4 pole 3.5mm cable (not included) and control tracks and pause/play using the P button but I find this useless in my case because I do not see myself at the range listening to music but then again this is up to you.- You can purchase a rechargeable battery (3M ALPHA1100 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery Pack) and charge it via the micro USB port located by the audio port. Both ports are under a rubber cover.- They come with a nice cloth bag that keeps them dust free when you don t use them and because they fold inside the headband and the storage bag is cloth, they take remarkably small space in the range bag. UPDATE 7/25/2019 - I originally wrote that I prefer the AA batteries but after I started using a pair of batteries per couple of weeks, it made financial sense to purchase the rechargeable battery and so I did. The rechargeable battery lasts longer than the AA batteries and I can give it a quick partial charge using a power bank if it runs out during a competition. One think to note is that after I used the AA batteries which always fit really tight, the rechargeable battery would not work because the contacts were permanently depressed/bend by the AA batteries. After I lifted the contacts using an owl tool (be careful not to pull on them too much), the rechargeable battery started working and have not had a problem since. Also worth mentioning the fact that there is no "charging" or "battery full" indicator but using an amp meter I found that the battery fully charges within 5 hours and it stops drawing power once it is charged so you can plug them in overnight without worrying about overcharging the battery. I compare the Peltor with the Howard Leight Impact Sport and Impact Pro because those are at a lower price than the Peltor Tac 300 and they have great reviews which makes them very appealing. The Impact Sport have great sound. You can hear speech with them on better than not having earmuffs. The sound clarity is great and I have even used them to listen to the TV at volume levels that I could barely hear without them. But they are rated at 22 NRR and in my opinion they should be rated less than that when compared to the Peltor Tac 300. So for me the Impact Sport are great when used outdoors and up to 9 mm caliber or indoors up to 22 caliber. They are comfortable on the ears and headband even after many hours. They are slim and fold inside the headband nicely taking less space than the Peltor Tac 300 to the point that you may even fit them in your jacket pocket. The Impact Pro, are rated at 30 NRR and they do a fantastic job reducing gun fire sounds even indoors with large caliber pistols but they are horrible when it comes to hearing speech with them on and I find myself struggling to understand what people say around me. The problem is not so much with the maximum volume level but more like in the attempt to cut off loud noises, speech filtering quality suffers a lot. Thay are comfortable to wear but they are bulky and do not fold in the headband which makes them too big for some range bags. The Peltor 300 are rated at 24 NRR and I am comfortable with the protection level indoors and outdoors for up to 45 caliber. I would prefer them to be 30 NRR so for "big bore" competitions I prefer the Impact Pro. Peltor offers the Tac 500 which are 26 NRR and have integrated Bluetooth but I find that useless because if I need to talk on the phone, I will need to be somewhere that there is no more than 80db ambient noise which means I can take them off and answer the phone. If you ask which ones I would purchase now that I have experienced all 3 of them I would definitely say the Peltor but if you have the budget to go further, I suggest the Peltor and the Impact Pro because although I am not impressed with the Impact Pro, having them both will possibly cover all your needs. I have modified all of them by adding a inch camera mount so I can record competitions with my Contour Roam 3 camera which has a rotating lens and allow to adjust the horizon of the picture frame so it can be mounted at almost any angle. For that I used the following parts:Contour ROAM3 Waterproof HD Video Camera (Black)Fotasy SCX2 1/4-Inch 20 Tripod Screw to Hot Shoe Adapter with Premier Cleaning Cloth (Black)I have also modified the Peltor Tac 300 to accommodate my hearing impairment by moving both speakers to the side of my good ear. This way, I can hear sounds picked up from the left and right microphone. My hearing problem may be fairly unique but if you happen to be able to benefit from such modification, you can see how I did it in the youtube video I made by searching for the title Earmuffs modification for hearing impairment (Peltor Tactical 300) 4Worth the extra bucks!I have or have had a variety of less expensive electronic ear protectors, including the super popular Howard Leight Impact Sport, Walker's Razor Slim, and cheaper ones from Caldwell and weird Chinese clones of the Howard Leights. These are better. WAY better. More comfortable, and sound better too. The background white noise "hiss" of the cheapies is nonexistent. And the clamping is faster and kills follow-up echoes much better. The ear pads are more comfortable (especially if you upgrade to the gel, but they are expensive and VERY HARD to install). They're a little more bulky, and heavier, if that matter much to you. But the comfort around your ears (and especially around safety or sunglasses!) is well worth those small drawbacks. They also take AA instead of AAA batteries - don't know if that's necessary due to higher power draw, or if they'll run longer, but I use rechargeable nickel metal hydride batteries in all my headsets just fine, including these.I'm happy. It was definitely worth the upgrade. 5
