It's bright enough to light the way and see where the mess was made.Being a gadget nut, I love the solar powered aspect. It takes a really long time to charge, like 8 hours, but I get a few weeks of limited use out of it before it starts going dim. I'm confused however, by the three stage light button. The purpose of having different levels of light eludes me. I always click it three times to get to the maximum brightness. Then it's one click to turn it off. 5 stars if it was just an on/off switch. That's just my personal gripe. I do recommend this product.UPDATE: A week after writing the review, the switch failed. Unfortunately there's no way to fix it without destroying the hat. BOO! I went with a stand-alone, under the brim, clip on LED light which takes rechargeable AAA batteries. Not as slick of a setup as the solar panel rig, but it's one third the price and it can be swapped out from hat to hat.
