Customer Reviews

Worked for me ... but not easy nor quick. I purchased a cheaper upgrade kit that came with both upper and lower drive bay cables, but was reluctant to do the upgrade until I tried to install macOS Mojave on the mini. It told me that the current drive was having S.M.A.R.T. problems and I should back up and replace the current drive. So that motivated me to make an upgrade. I couldn't find the cheap kit that I had received, so I ordered this one directly from OWC. I also ordered a Crucial BX500 480 GB HD and a 1TB 7200 RPM WD Black drive. The OWC video was excellent for the most part. However they made the antenna connection look easy and after I had done it many times, I finally got pretty good at it. I think it took me an hour to get it lined up and in place the first time. I didn't use the copper shield that is supposed to improve the machine because I had noticed to late in the reassembly process. As to things that haven't worked out for me. The metal piece that has the antenna on it, refuses to let me line up both of the screws that hold it in place. So I only have one installed. These elevated screws are what lock the bottom cover in place along with a 3rd screw. So my bottom cover is only held in place with two of them. When it came to installing the macOS, I messed up because I had removed the original HD and installed the new ones, so unless I was going to go in and take it apart again, I couldn't have a separate 480 GB SSD and 1 TB drive. So I let it default to the fusion drive, which turned out to be about 1.4 TB. I used the internet recovery which installed an older version of OSX (mountain lion maybe) and upgraded that to Mojave. So that worked out well and I was able to migrate from the original drive connected by a USB enclosure. There maybe other issues that I haven't found yet, but the machine is working and I am running Mojave with my apps and data restored on to the new fusion drive. 4Delivers as promised with great instructions. This product does exactly what it says and the instructions are very clear, even with pictures. Don't get me wrong, it is a lot of work. I've built several computers from the ground up, and this project took my 3 hours. You do need to be a little handy. However, the instruction are very clever, and exact. And now my Mac mini has an SSD as well as the original HDD it came with working as the secondary drive. 5Do NOT get this if your OEM HD is installed in the upper bay from the factory ( rare ) This "kit" is a bit deceiving. I picked the lower bay kit and all I needed was the ribbon cable and the 2 pins that screw into the hard drive to secure it. This kit DOES NOT come with the pins, and the ribbon cable doesn't match up well with the port on the logic board. I had to fold it. I guess they want you to take the pins off the the other drive, but after finding out I had a mini with the OEM drive already in the upper bay ( rare ) I decided to just leave the OEM one in as I didn't need to remove the logic board to add a 2nd drive. ( why I ordered this kit ) Now my mini just has a new SSD floating free in the lower bay and I paid $$ for only needing a ribbon cable that didn't even fit correctly that I could have got for $10 elsewhere. oh well. 3The other two (flat and phillips) are basically useless. Maybe it could have lessen the price some ... Installing a Hard Drive on the Mac Mini 2012 is a very delicate process. Some of the things to watch out for:1. Removing and reattaching the WLAN antenna. The attachment is very tiny and behind a covered mesh making it harder even more. Be careful not to deform the attachment or it won't fit. Leaving you with a WLAN-less setup.2. Removing the power cable from the board which has a very tight fit to its socketGave a rating just for three stars for the following reasons:1. There were 4 supplied screwdrivers. The installation will only need the two Torx screwdrivers. The other two (flat and phillips) are basically useless. Maybe it could have lessen the price some more if the two were not included in the first place.2. There was an error in the installation guide which somewhat makes the process even more complicated. Specifically on step 8, the guide pointed out on the wrong screw to remove.3. The included grommets are somewhat oversized such that there will be a bit of bulge after the attachment. No it should not be the case.4. Step 37 on the installation guide should have a close up illustration so that it will be directly understood what is involved for this step.Overall I was satisfied with purchasing this product and my machine is still working smoothly after the installation. 3Good kit for adding a second drive This adapter kit fit my late 2012 Mac Mini perfectly. It's an interface cable to attach a drive to the second SATA port, right next to the main drive, and some grommets and screws to attach the drive to the hard drive bracket. But be forewarned, the screws have to be tightened deep in the grommets to get everything to fit properly, not just snugly, like I assumed at first. Not tightening them sufficiently causes the original hard drive to not fit into its guide hole properly and that causes the front edge of the drive to interfere with the interface cables attachment points to the main board. There is very little room for error inside a Mac Mini! Other than that, it went really smoothly. Oh, it comes with the tools you need to do the job, except for a 2mm allen wrench. Get one if you don't have one. Their directions say to use the included Torx 8 driver, but I wouldn't do that. You have to put a fair amount of torque to loosen the screws the first time, and the risk of stripping the screw head is high, in my estimation. 5Difficult install, but it does work if you are VERY careful and have decent technical skills The parts and tools were of good quality. Beware, though, installing this kit this is not for the faint of heart. Having prior technical experience is pretty much mandatory. The only gripe I have with them is the documentation. The printed documentation skips some steps, requiring you to watch their online videos, and those are complete and accurate but the steps are done far too quickly by demonstrators who must have done it a hundred times before. They need to slow down a bit, as if they are teaching dummies like me rather than rushing through a repair job. Instead of using long static graphic shots between scenes they might better use that time to show clearly what the build is supposed to look like at that stage. I had to pause and rewind dozens of times to see exactly what I needed. The use of the board removal tool is also very poorly described and if you do what feels natural you could easily destroy your motherboard. (hint: don't pull on it, pry with it) That is documented in user comments on their website. You should read those before trying to extract the motherboard. It costs more than a complete Mini to replace it of you crack it. Other than that, the kit did the job.One other hint, triple check your fan connector before buttoning it back up. When you are ready to close it up, plug it in and power on, making sure the fan spins up. That connector can look fine but not really be connected. Same goes for the SATA connectors but the consequences are not as serious. You may not boot but you won't fry the CPU. 4Great product. Easy installation and good quality I was looking for the SSD installer kit to place a second hard drive in my Mac Mini, and this was the perfect solution for me! The instructions are very straight forward in the manual to walk you through how to take apart your Mac mini and put it back together again. I would highly recommend, being a former Apple technician, ALWAYS read ahead before attempting this. Make sure you read carefully through all these instructions and make sure you have all the proper tools BEFORE you attempt this!I would definitely also make sure you have an ESD safety strap attached to your wrist while attempting this repair. You do not want to cause giant pits and holes to occur in your IC chips and logic board from static shock. It's very real and can definitely occur and cause your mini to never turn on again. So, please be forewarned before attempting this, watch some youtube videos, or talk to some technician friends that deal with repairs all the time. You don't want something fun and simple to do turn into a nightmare for you.Be sure you have the correct Torx tools and the logic board removal tool for the Mac Mini 2011 and later model necessary to complete this repair. I'd recommend a blackstick or an ESD-safe equivalent plastic tool for removing cables and aiding you while you're inside the machine. Also, a very necessary tool to do this repair well. Also, be very clear that this kit DOES NOT include the tools necessary to do this repair! I've read reviews before giving these types of kits low ratings because the tools were not included. READ THE DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY!I'd recommend purchasing a SATA SSD drive from either Crucial, Newegg or TigerDirect for the best prices on them, besides here on Amazon. They have the best prices for SSD drives for Mac Mini's I've found. I used this kit in order to install my SSD inside and install my Mac OS on it, so the mini boots off the SSD and I used the stock drive that came with the mini as storage and as my file server. If you have all the right tools and do your research ahead of time before placing your SSD drive inside your mini with this kit, this will be a great addition to your Mac Mini! 5Great upgrade for my 2012 Mac Mini!! Before installing this, I made sure I watched the OWC & iFixIt install videos a few times each, and was careful with each step.I was especially careful with the fan and IR connector cables since they are easy to break since the connectors are laminated to the motherboard. Just as an extra precaution, I also ordered this set Set of 5 Professional Pry Tools for iPhone, iPod LCD Screen Opener Repair Kit with Non-abrasive Nylon Spudgers that included a longer more pointed one, which I placed on top of the motherboard connector with my left hand, while using the green tool to CAREFULLY pull straight up with my right.Everything else was straight forward, and took about 30 minutes total, and I was really taking my time. 5Great Kit, Excellent Instruction Manual This kit is awesome. I bought it here on Amazon a few months ago, and just got around to using it because I was dreading performing this upgrade after reading about it, and seeing how many steps and delicate components were involved. The HDD assembly is seriously just about the last component still in the Mini's shell before you can remove it and perform the upgrade.Have to say, I am impressed. The kit comes with all the parts you need, including four Mac-specific screwdrivers, to remove and replace the necessary parts. What was really great was the absolutely excellent instruction manual - this comes with a small color booklet, with pictures and insets for the small items, and perfect instructions. As long as you have some degree of computer aptitude, and some patience, and follow the instructions to the letter, you can get this project completed perfectly in a couple of hours. Tech writers from other companies could learn a thing or two from OWC.One note of caution, all of the connectors in this are extremely small, so if you don't have good near vision, I strongly recommend purchasing some strong magnifying eyeglasses so you can see the components clearly and don't damage them.I also had one small deviation from the procedure, I didn't remove the antenna connector because I was able to swing the antenna plate out of the way enough while still attached to be able to remove the other components. The little snap on the wireless antenna connector is VERY easily damaged if you don't line it up just right. I have made that mistake on other systems in the past, where I tried to force it to connect and broke it.I didn't use the slow, original 500 GB HGST hard drive, I replaced it with a new 1 TB Seagate Firecuda, and then added a 500 GB WD Black I had laying around as the second drive. I probably could have bought a solid state drive, but this is basically a second desktop for me and a project computer, so I wanted to see how the Firecuda performs. Everything restored via Time Machine backup and booted up without a hitch, and all components appear to be working properly.*Update* was having issues with the Firecuda and extremely slow boot times and hanging in the Mac Mini. The WD black drive worked fine as a boot drive. I also had the same issue with another 2.5" Firecuda (2 TB) as a USB boot drive with another Mac computer, so there seems to be some compatibility issue with Macs and that drive type (I have a 3.5" Firecuda in a Windows machine, which works perfectly). I replaced with a 500 GB Toshiba SSHD and all is well for several days now, so no issue with the OWC kit. Just a heads up if you are considering buying one of these drives.I am very pleased with this. 5... more expensive iFixit kit but this ended up being perfect for my 2011 mac mini I almost went with the more expensive iFixit kit but this ended up being perfect for my 2011 mac mini. The connector and parts are great quality, I inspected mine thoroughly so I didn't end up wasting time finding out it's defective after installation. As far as installation goes, it was not hard at all. I am pretty gutsy about electronics, but not an expert by any means and found it relatively easy. Definitely order some spudger sticks with this kit unless you have some already. Some installation tips:1. Be very very careful with the IR connector. It is really fragile, I recommend using a pointy spudger to gently lift it up from back (where wires connect). This is the only "surgical" part of the installation in my opinion.2. The metal grill that holds the wifi antenna can be a real pain to get back on. I recommend putting one screw into the top hard drive, then maneuver the grill in place. Trying to get it on, then screwing it down is more difficult I found. It will take some time to get it to "snap" back into place.3. Don't do what I did and get it assembled and forget to put one of the plastic baffles back in place. I had to install the grill twice due to this! Not a problem if you follow the instructions.4. Make sure your hard drive works before installation and apply power before putting the cover back on the mini to make sure the fans work. You could probably go a step further and make sure everything works before re-assembly but I like to live dangerously.Mostly obvious stuff but this is what I learned doing this and thought it might help others. Overall, great kit and totally worth the upgrade! 5
