Customer Reviews

27inch strips did not hold and broke screen. The 27inch screen strips that came with it did not hold my screen. In less than 24 hrs it came crashing down and almost hit my kid. I cleaned the surface area very well from any of the old residue with rubbing alcohol and applied the strips ... had trouble with strips 15 and 14 is the red tags came off but I managed to get the white backing off. After apply it it was fine til less than 24 hrs screen came crashing down and almost hit my kid... I know the kit that the strips came with had Chinese writing on it on the clear packing. I thought I trusted OWC stuff and at this point o don t anymore. Very disappointed in OWC which ruined my 27inch iMac display 1Except for NOT including the SATA/Power cable as stated, this has all the tools you need for Mac or iMac repair. Except for the misleading header on this listing, this is a great buy. The tool kit has everything you will need for working on your Mac, iMac. OWC put together a really nice kit with everything you need. The header states that this includes a SATA/Power cable for an SSD drive installation, IT DOES NOT. You will need to order from Amazon or OWC to get the cable you need to install an SSD drive on your Mac, iMac. 5OWC has a great youtube video showing you step-by-step on how to use ... I bought this package to replace a Fusion Drive in my late 2012 iMac 21" with a 1TB SSD.The kit had everything I needed to be successful in taking my iMac apart and putting it back together. OWC has a great youtube video showing you step-by-step on how to use the tools and disassembling the iMac -- and most importantly putting it back together. The hardest part of the process is cleaning the old double sided tape off the iMac. 5Amazing! This kit was perfect! Was amazed at the adhesive strips and how well they fit/matched up. Definitely suggest anyone needing to remove the monitor from their iMac to purchase this kit. Can't beat the price seeings how the adhesive packs alone are about as expensive! 5Worked perfectly! All the parts were as described. The video was very clear and concise. The only item that was a little time consuming was the innocuous statement: remove any residual remnants of the old attachment material - that took a while and one has to be really careful to not scratch the screen glass; but it is not difficult if you take your time. I've only worked on PCs before, which are MUCH easier to work on, but I was able to disassemble a 21.5 iMac, remove the hard drive and replace it with an SSD, put it all back together, perform a clean install of MacOS Mojave, and I now have an operational system that runs significantly faster than before. I was surprised that Apple used a SLOW 5400RPM hard drive in that system. 5Good...but MAJOR expensive fail This ended up being the most expensive purchase repair...the kit arrived as expected and the tools did the job for opening up the display in order to replace my hard drive. The major fail was in the double-sided sticky tape for holding the display in place. I've done this before years ago and everything was great. This time around, after one week of everything running fine, I came in to see the display had disconnected (see picture). I suspect that the tape was not as thick as it used to be or something. Because the display pulled out, the logic board connector was broken and the display failed to work. I had to to get a new display and a new logic board ($500 each).Lesson to be learned, don't trust the double-sided sticky tape because it may cost you $1,000. 1Did a good job holding screen Day 2 and the screen is holding strong on my 27". It would be nice however that they include either directions or a statement saying how critical it is to clean the surface. Others stated that their screen fell off after a month and I believe its because of poor surface prep. I used goo gone on the edges to get every bit of the adhesive gunk off and then I went around with contact cleaner (electrical cleaner). This ensured the surfaces were degreased and clean of everything.UPDATE: been 2 weeks and see no signs of screen slipping/falling off. So far very happy for this buy! Clean those surfaces thoroughly is key!! 4Tools work great and make a tricky job very simple if you ... Tools work great and make a tricky job very simple if you have a little patience. Watch the OWC video on how to do each step on your iMac and it will show you the way. I used this to open a 2007, 20" iMac and it worked just fine. I had to replace the original hard drive which had gone bad. 5Tools are nice. Adhesive strips are terrible I'll start by saying the tools that came with the kit are nice. I'm not a super computer technician but they felt good enough for the average DIYer. I'm delighted to have a set of Torx drivers to add to my tool bag. The adhesive strips, however, were another story. There were two major problems with the adhesive strips; the fit and the adhesive itself. I bought this kit for a 2017 iMac 27". One of the strips for the top part of the screen did not completely line up with some of the contours of the area. Not a big deal but kind of sloppy feeling. The major issue with the fitment was that the strip was too long. I had to cut the strip to length to get it to fit making sure the seam was on the thicker part of the strip for maximum hold. Again, not the end of the world as I was still able to apply and cover all the original adhesive areas of the screen. I was just hoping for a better and cleaner application. The second major issue I had with the them and this one's a big one, was the adhesive itself was did not hold. After about three weeks of use, I was working on the computer when all of sudden the top of the screen gave way and separated making that sticky wet sound that tape (or in this case, adhesive) makes when it let's go. Scared the bejeesus out of me too. Anyway, I pressed the screen back on and continued my work. Well a couple days later, I walk into my office and to my horror, I find my screen completely detached and sitting face down on my keyboard. Fearing a cracked screen, I gingerly picked it up and flipped it over. Luckily there was no damage to the screen. No scratches. No nicks, no anything. My next thoughts went to the two ribbon cables that connect it to the computer. I feared that they would have been torn out but after inspection, no damage was done. Whew! I was about to be super pissed if those had ripped off. When I went to reattach the screen, I did notice that I wasn't completely damage free. On both connection points for the cables, there was some damage to the parts that keep the cable securely attached. I was still able to reconnect the cables perfectly as there was no issue with the pins. So, until I get new adhesive strips from another brand, I will be using 4 small strips of packing type make sure the screen stays attached. Not the most pro looking setup but it should hold.In the end, would I recommend this product? Meh... I feel I was extremely lucky not to suffer any substantial damage but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be scared if I had to use these strips again. 2A lifesaver iMacs are notoriously hard to work on, but this kit has pretty much what you need for a full teardown and upgrade. For older wide-edged iMacs, the screen is removed with the included suction cups quite easily. The kit contains the cups, a bunch of Torx and Phillips screwdrivers, tweezers, spudgers, a locking gripper, and other items. For newer thin-edged iMacs, it includes a cutter wheel for cutting through the adhesive behind the edges of the display, and it also includes one set each of adhesive replacements sized for 21" and 27" iMacs. You can get more from OWC as needed.OWC's web site has full videos of how to tear down and replace drives and memory for most iMacs. I found them essential and perfectly step-by-step, including putting parts back together in reverse order, which may take a few tricks. They suggest and I recommend watching the full video through before beginning the repair process; it will keep you from making most beginners' mistakes. The tools in this kit are not professional quality. They're designed for the occasional home repair or upgrade. Still, I could have never made it through without tools I would not have thought to buy, and the price is quite good. I replaced hard drives on an old and a middle-aged iMac and had exactly what I needed.Word to the wise: probably 75% of the time with the late-2013 iMac was involved with dealing with the adhesive tape that holds the monitor on; first you have to cut it and CAREFULLY lift the top of the screen a few inches; after removing the screen (must unplug a cable first), you replace the other parts, then you have to remove all the old adhesive (a royal pain) and then put the new adhesive pieces in their correct places, not letting them overlap onto the edge of the metal frame. They're shaped, and they give a vital tip for aligning them in the video, but they want to stick a bit earlier than you may want them to. Good luck, and happy repairing! 5
