Customer Reviews

Good SATA3 5-bay removable drive moduleThese are modules that fit 5 3.5 inch drives, max one inch height, into 3 standard 5.25 inch 'half-height' bays (as used most commonly by optical drives these days). I have had good results using them, both directly to SATA hosts and in conjunction with external SATA RAID controllers (in particular, the SPM-394). The trays are easy to insert and remove. The trays keep the drives lined up when inserting, so they can be mounted with the drives horizontal or vertical and still inserted/removed easily in either case (every tray-less module I have tried has problems lining up some drives when the drives are mounted vertically). I have had no problems with hot-swapping using these enclosures, providing they are properly attached to a sufficiently large power converter (using two independent connectors rather than two on the same cable, and a power converter that can handle the inrush and spin-up current without glitching) and a host/controller that supports it. It provides a power/presence light (blue) per drive, and an activity light (green) per drive. The activity light uses the pin on the SATA power connector that indicates drive activity, but this pin is shared with the 'immediate/delay spin' signal, so you may need to turn on staggered spin (or something similar) on the host in order for the activity lights to work. There are, however, a couple of minor things; if it were not for these I would probably offer 5 stars. The packing is poor. I have never had one of these show up correctly positioned in its packing; always one end or the other has fallen out of the styrofoam packing and is against the outside of the box. In two cases, one of the trays was damaged by handling when in this position (the stop was broken and the tray pushed too far in; installing a drive to the tray limits how far in it will go, so this is not a major issue, but it does not need to happen). Two of the three I own came to me with screws loose -- the first one I got was actually missing a screw from the faceplate and the other three were loose; I guess the missing one fell out then got out of the box. Since I make it a point to check this sort of thing before I put a device into use, I have caught it. Since it happened on two of three of these for me, I strongly suggest anybody who buys one of these make sure the faceplate and backplate screws are tight and nothing rattles inside before using it.The trays are a little flimsy. Inserting/removing them with reasonable care that one applies to drive handling should suffice, but when mounting drives to the trays, the screws should only be snug, not over-tight. Over-tightening them can cause them to break the mounting point in the tray. I damaged one tray by over-tightening a screw, and have since been using a jeweler's screwdriver to limit the amount of torque I can apply to the screws. They only need to be in there well enough to not vibrate loose. It does not come with mounting screws, but it really needs custom mounting screws. Go to the hardware store and buy one of those wire cutters that can also cut screws, and get some 6-32 screws (brass screws are easy to cut). Cut the 6-32 screws so they have a bit less than 3/16 inch of thread (if you have a particularly thick case, maybe a little longer), and use those to mount it. If you use screws that are any longer than absolutely necessary, they will cause problems. You should feel inside the outermost bays when inserting the screws; if the screw comes out past the inner wall, it is too long.I have seen some people comment about the fan noise and replace them with slower fans. Considering the temperature I measure coming out the back of these things with 7200RPM server-class drives, I would recommend not compromising airflow; if you can find a quieter fan that keeps air moving, it is easy to replace the fan. If you use a lower airflow fan, you may find your drives cooking (there are, after all, five of them in a small space). One more thing, but not specifically related to these units (anything of the same form -- 5 3.5 drives in three 5.25 bays will have this issue): it requires three 5.25 'half-height' bays without 'supports'. If your system uses rails, it will probably fit easily. If your system just has places to screw stuff in (and no metal flaps to help hold things in place while you attach them), it will probably fit easily. If you have those 'helpful' little tabs that keep devices in place while you screw them down, you must bend them or cut them out of the way in order to mount this.Someone is selling replacement/spare trays on Amazon, so even if you do manage to damage the trays or trays come damaged because of the packing issues, you should be able to replace them reasonably.Overall, the minor flaws I encountered were not enough to impact its performance for me, but they did cause me some inconvenience that I think was beyond reasonable expectation, so I took off a star.4pretty good, a bit noisy on the fanFits my case well with only a bit of bending of the drive holding tabs, which was expected.Quite long, so I am glad I have a large case with a bit of space behind the drive bay and the motherboard so I can get my motherboard power cable in there easily.Only complaint: somewhat noisy fan. I took apart the case and popped in this Coolink SWiF2 800 80mm 1100 RPM 3-pin fan, and I couldn't be happier.4used for UnRaidHave 3 or these (4 soon) for UnRaid. Needed it for quick harddrive replacement. I do not like opening my case unless I have to clean it.5Great but not perfectRRO:It does exactly what it says, and is literally the best 5 bay solution that you can get for this price range.CON:The fan is SUPER cheap, and loud as hell. Be prepared to buy and extra 80mm fan to replace the stock one. Also swapping the fan isn't too difficult, but the plastic risers used to hold the fan in place are a pain to push through the new fan. Also, anyone who bought a case like the Antec Nine Hundred will have to bend back all the metal ledges in the case as the Norco ss-500 doesn't have any grooves for the metal ledges to pass through.All-in-all, not perfect, but still worth the buy. I'll pick up an extra two to do a 15 drive bay monster storage PC.4very solid and nice, loud fan. bad fan mounts.it feels like a great enclosure. one of my trays is a bit hard to slide a drive in and out. the 80mm fan is kinda loud. i have this installed in a case with silent fans and i really need to replace this thing.edit: with stock 80mm fan, it keeps drives quite cool. 4/5 in there and at most, they get up to 31C.EDIT2:I replaced the stock fan, it was no easy task. there were some screws holding it in place. fine, removed. however the fan in there was also stuck on these plastic risers. the screws would have been enough, but these plastic risers, that the screws bore into, were very difficult to remove. out of the 4 there, i snapped 2 of them off removing the old fan and putting the new one on. it was a really s***ty, unnecessary design.with a silent fan and 5 drives in there, it gets hot. when one drive is being heavily accessed in there, it gets up to 48C. the drives next to it will get up to 42C from conducting the heat.knowing the fan is a pain in the ass to replace, i might not get this again.3Great.Works great. Make sure you have screws that are flat heads that can be recessed otherwise it will be a little difficult getting the harddrives in.5This Fits With The Exact Raid Plan I Had For My P/C BuildThe five slot cage fits my case exactly with no modification. The cooling fan is large and quiet.Attention all nerds: 5 Two T/B drives make a great 10 T/B RAID-5 with 7.75 T/B of usable storage.Hot Diggety!5One of the better choices but not perfectI've tried three different Hot Swap 5 bay modules on a media server that I have; this, it's fraternal twin brother the Super Micro, and an Icy Dock. The Icy Dock may look nicer than the Norco but it will eventually kill drives due to poor ventilation. I was way disappointed with the Icy Dock, I've always thought them to be reputable. The Norco can be found a bit cheaper than the Super Micro and I prefer the way the Norco looks and the drive levers feel, though you will get some play if there are no drives mounted in the bays. The only problem I had with the Norco was that the mounting screw holes did not line up with my server mounting holes. This was not solved by mounting the thing upside down, which would have not been acceptable in any case, since I wanted easy access to the cabling which is on the top. I was able to force a screw through one of the holes well enough to make sure that nothing is going anywhere but this shouldn't happen if there is any QC on these things at all! I also found the drive mounts stick a bit, but that was solved with a quick spray of teflon on them. In daily use I like the good status indicators and drive temps. are staying reasonable, even on a possibly defective WD that runs very hot to touch in open air.4Perfect! Almost...I ordered three of these for a home server. I was a bit wary because I have tried other 5-in-3 cages and had problems with drives being detected. When they arrived I started the process of installing them and one would not seat properly. I stuck out about 1/8th inch from the front of the case. This was not only a problem aesthetically, but my server has a door on the front and it would not close because of this. A close inspection showed that the holes for the mounting screws were shifted back 1/8th inch in comparison to the two that mounted flush. My first thought was it was somehow drilled incorrectly, but I then realized that the aluminium body was simply backward from the others. Fortunately I had the appropriate tiny torx bit and was able to disassemble the device and turn things around. This was a bit annoying, but I was very please to that design makes it easy for the end-user to take apart.Once this was fixed, everything else went smoothly. The only complaint is that the fans are a bit on the loud side. However, they appear to use standard 80mm ball bearing case fans and I plan on swapping them out for magnetic bearing fans (Enermax UC-8EB look promising) and fully expect that will resolve the noise issue. All in all, I am very happy with this purchase.5Excellent Cage... two -very minor- issues.I'll be straight and to the point: this is a solid, working cage that does the job it was intended to do. I'm using it to house 5x2TB HDD's for my Windows Home Server rig. As of right now, I have three weeks of uptime and all drives are a GO! :)That said, only two minor flaws (only took one star off for both combined):1) As best as I can tell, the SATA ports are not labeled on the rear of the cage, so I couldn't tell which tray went with which port. In order to get them to appear in order (left-to-right) in my BIOS, there was a bit of time spent swapping the cables around until I figured out which was which. As I said in the subject line, this was a very minor issue, but annoying enough to mention here.2) This is probably due to the random case (one sitting in my closet) I used for my install, but none of the screw holes for the cage lined up with my 5.25 bay area in my case, so the cage is not anchored securely at the moment. However, it is weighted down with all the HDD's installed so it's not moving at all.Overall, this cage is well worth it for anyone building a home server or NAS of some kind. My WHS rig is 12 TB right now (one non-swappable 2TB storage drive is mounted inside the case); but, when the 3TB HDD's arrive, I'll be boosting it up to 18TB one hot-swappable 3TB drive at a time... This cage will make doing so a breeze! :)4
