    Good upgrade for an older mini-Mag Based on ceiling bounce comparison, the LED is basically the same brightness as a new Xenon bulb, only cool white instead of warm white. However, the LED is noticeably brighter than the older bulbs from several years ago, and battery life should also be much better with the LED. I really like the tail click switch, which enables the mini-Mag in my flashlight holster to remain at my preferred focus setting. Hopefully the switch will prove durable enough for moderate use. 4You may need to shorten the length of the LED leads. When I installed the LED, it worked when the lens of the flash light was not screwed on. However is would not light if the lens was installed. I was about to return it when I noticed that when the LED was installed, the LED protruded about 1/16" from the front of the flash light. I clipped about 1/16" from the length of the leads from the LED, and it now works as it should when assembled into the flash light. Also make sure that you follow the directions in the tiny yellow instruction sheet - the polarity makes a difference with an LED.This is a great upgrade to the old incandescent bulb. 4Lazarus Effect? My (2ea AA) Mini-Mag dates from the early 1990s and was used extensively on the job. I'd converted it to LED years ago, added an IQ multi-function tailcap switch, and kept on truckin'...Some years ago I started adding other LED flashlights to my tool sets, including a couple of high-lumen tactical lights, one especially for EDC and self-defense. The old Mini-Mag fell into disuse.I found it a couple weeks ago while cleaning up, and for the first time it failed to light. New batteries, cleaned contacts all surfaces, no joy. Went looking for a current solution and found this Nite Ize kit for a totally acceptable $4.98! Read the reviews, got and installed the kit, and once again have a highly-serviceable, tough mini-flashlight.No, at 30 lumens (rated) it's certainly not the 'brightest star in the sky.' I miss the functionality of the IQ Switch, *especially* the little red blinking 'find me' LED it had, but certainly have more functionality and screamingly higher output with the modern tac lights I typically use today. Ergo, no biggie.This oldie-but-goodie will certainly find a new home in one of my specialty toolkits. Nice to have it back, and on the cheap! :-) 5Does not Light My Fire This came in early and was well packed, so no dig at the seller, but this conversion has a significant design defect.The LED head parts are too thick to allow the head to screw onto the body securely. The head is one rotation from falling off when it bottoms out, and when it bottoms out, of course the lamp is off even with the new push switch tail cap. If you try to focus the beam out more than a few yards in front of you, the head comes off before you get it focused in. I took a chance on these because of the tail cap switch, which works well, and the the low price. Other conversions seem to be priced about the same as a complete new Mini MagLED. I hate to say it, but if you are looking for an LED conversion for an older Mini Mag, this is not it. I bought two of these and tried them on several of my MiniMags and had the same results on all of them. I reluctantly do not recommend this product. 2New life for my old mini mag lights. These led conversions are noticeably brighter than the old OEM Xenon bulbs and the led should last a very long time. They seem well made and they were easy to install. My only gripe is that there is no place to hook a lanyard on the included tail cap. I like to have a wrist strap on my mini mag. So I kept the stock tail cap and just twist the lens piece to shut it off. The flashlights in the photos have new batteries installed, there is a remarkable difference in brightness. I'm happy so far. 5Easy upgrade for mini maglight that needs a few improvements Simple way to more than double the light output of the Mini Maglite, and add a pushbutton switch which is easier to use than the well known "twist-ON" method.PROSThe LED will draw much less power and last longer, increasing battery life (but many owners likely will replace batteries due to corrosion long before this becomes an issue)Easy upgrade that more than doubles the light outputIncludes new LED bulb and holder, parabolic reflector and pushbutton endcap switchCONSWhen they replaced the end cap, the machined boss that allowed a lanyard to be attached disappeared... While the pushbutton is more useful than the "Twist On" system, not having a way to attach a lanyard is a half step backIMO it's a bit overpriced... fair retail value is $5.99 or 2 for $10.00Designed in US, made in China - my experience with Chinese made LED flashlights is ABYSMAL, so the jury is out on this 4Works well, difficult to install. I purchased this to upgrade one of my older AA-Mini Maglites, since the xenon lamps kept burning out quickly.It works! After reassembling the flashlight it works exactly the same as before, with the added benefit of being LED, which casts a more uniform whiter (higher K, not necessarily more lumens) light, and should last a bit longer, barring any accidents.The bad ....When I took my flashlight apart it quite literally fell apart in my hands. The inside lamp holder fell out the back, and the pin holders fell off. I had to piece it together and assemble it back into the flashlight, which took some effort since tipping it to slide the inner assembly resulted in all the pieces falling apart again. I guess that's the price of having a 10 yr old flashlight.It got worse.When I put the LED in place, including changing the reflector, it was sticking out a few mm higher than normal, and the lens assembly wouldn't tighten down. It was barely on. It turns out that the LED has to be ... convinced ... to seat further down into the pin holders. After I figured that out, it seated normally and I was able to screw the lens assembly in as normal.After all the fussing, it does work like any old AA Maglite. It's just getting through the installation without damaging anything that's difficult. 4Read the reviews before you buy. Not impressed. Sadly, I did not pay attention to the negative reviews. I proceeded to dismantle my Mini Mag light (mine takes two AA batteries). I changed out the reflective lens and installed the LED bulb according to instructions. The dome of the flashlight screws back on but no longer effectively turns the flashlight on or off - it stays on. I was hoping not to install the push button on/off switch that was included but to turn it off, you really have no choice. I much prefer the twisting on/off procedure as this also allows adjustment of the beam width. Once installed, the twisting action is very limited in range as the new bulb is surrounded by a fat black plastic platform and one can not twist the flashlight dome all the way down on to the flashlight barrel. Using the standard twisting action often did not turn the light off so be advised that you will need the push button switch. The included replacement switch also has no hole for a wrist strap - I did not think about this when I bought mine.The width of the beam can no longer be adjusted. I guess that is not a deal breaker. The LED bulb just barely brighter than the standard incandescent halogen bulb. The color is blue - it casts a cool color that makes it difficult to see green, brown or dark colored surfaces.My real problem is the switch which screws on the bottom of the barrel. The machining of the threads was poor. The material is harder that the soft aluminum of the flashlight barrel and resulted in cross threading; it ruined the threads on the barrel. The switch itself was functioning fine until I used it in some light rain - a little moisture leaked in through the button and now it is dead. The o-rings of my Mag lights have never leaked in the past and I have been using them in inclement weather for over 15 years.At this price point, there are so many better options for LED flashlights that I don't recommend converting an old Mag light to LED. I converted mine back to the original set up and moved on. 2Good luck installing the bulb correctly, This LED is far brighter than the original halogen. Thats the good news.I m a retired electrical engineer. I spent at least 45 minutes trying to read the instructions and follow along. The instructions amounted to a piece of paper the size of a matchbook cover-both sides with micro sized drawings and arrows that made near zero sense. So how hard can this be? Tedious sums it up.Unlike conventional bulbs, LED s have an anode (+) and cathode(-). The LED bulb must be installed so the anode contacts the + battery and the cathode bent to contact the case. The push button closes the circuit. (Ground)I finally wound up with 2 jumpers- two batteries to identify LED anode/cathode. Most folks wouldn t know how (or why) to do this and just give up when the LED failed to light. 50-50 chance of getting it right, by luck. So there you have it. Feeling lucky? 2Breathes New Life into an Old Tool I've had several over the years, including a variety of minis, plus a 3D and a 6D fullsize lights.I never really cared for the twist-to-turn-on feature, either.After finding one while cleaning out my childhood bedroom, with a burned out bulb and full of corroded batteries. Just for the fun of it, I cleaned the whole thing out, replaced the old bulb with the tailcap spare, and turned it on, and was just totally underwhelmed. Compared to the Petzl headlamp I'd been using of late, it was basically useless.That made me sad. I'd always liked Maglites, and their crazy ruggedness. I've owned many of the years, including at least 3 minis, a 3D, and a (totally impractical) 6D.Just for fun, I felt like putting new life into this old tool.Enter this kit.Installation was as easy as changing a bulb, and the results were like night and day- literally. It went from being useless to useful in the blink of an eye.And the tail cap fixed my least favorite part of using a mini- that awful twist-to-turn on feature.Its always quicker to use a button, and I'm very picky about the focus. Now I can leave it where I want it without constantly readjusting it.If you have an old MiniMag lying around collecting dust, this is a worthwhile upgrade to bring it back into your tool rotation. 5
