Customer Reviews

Pure JUNK! We ordered this device for company use ... Pure JUNK!We ordered this device for company use for a small developer network. It sits in a temperature controlled room and is powered behind enterprise class UPS units for clean, uninterrupted power. The first device we ordered failed within 2-days of operation. We tried again weeks later with another one of these devices and it was non-functional out of the box. I spoke to a colleague in the industry who also purchased one of these and he mentioned that it failed after about 2-months of operation. These seem to have serious power supply issues. Buyer beware!Look elsewhere... 1I thought i was having problems with one of these recently (thought I was locked out or bad firmware) till a buddy of mine recom I have always been a Netgear fanboy. And while I use mostly Cisco now, these guys have gotten me by many a time on a budget project. I really dont care for their customer support any mroe, but the switch itself doesnt need much support. my biggest complaint is that you have to keep a portable version of an older browser to manage them via the web. I thought i was having problems with one of these recently (thought I was locked out or bad firmware) till a buddy of mine recommended using an old version of FireFox to mange it and Voila! i was in. strange but true. 4Excellent Support I really appreciate the free 90 day technical support. I had a problem setting up multicasting because I didn't know and called their technical support. I was expecting the typical hoops of running through levels of support but I was surprised the 1st person who helped me actually helped. We spent over 1 1/2 on the phone testing the setting until we got it right. The person never lost patience and was very professional. I'm a Netgear fan now and will continue to buy their products. 5Not a bad switch but needs some firmware fixes to allow the specified functionality to actually work properly I have the Netgear GS724Tv4 switch running firmware 6.3.1.19. It is replacing a Netgear GS116E. This is the main switch for my house. I needed to upgrade my switch because I am using wired Sonos players which use STP (or BPDU flooding), neither of which the GS116E supports. The 724T fits the bill nicely for my application. One thing to be aware of is that the Amazon listing for this family of switches combines customer reviews and Q&A for the whole family, so if you buy the GS724Tv4 as I did and read that it supports PoE, what you're actually reading is that the GS724TPv4 supports PoE. If you need PoE on the same switch and you don 't have or don't want to use a PoE injector, then this its not the switch for you.Pros:1. Web-based configuration and monitoring interface on MacOS High Sierra / Safari works fine once you learn it's quirks.2. STP and Sonos seems to play well together.3. Lots of feature configurability including VLANs and QoS.4. Fanless design so it can sit in an office environment and not disturb people.5. Supports SNMP so you can point the switch at your LAN SNMP server and do control/status with that.6. Supports RADIUS authentication.7. Supports Syslog to an external logging server.Cons:1. Getting time sync (via SNTP) to work took a bit of Googling and it started to work yesterday but now is failing and reverting to local time (which means it won't ever go out to the time server and get updated time). There are lots of complaints about this issue for the v4 version of this switch, and Netgear community support isn't really helpful. I am contacting Netgear directly for assistance.2. The "System -> Device View" Link doesn't do anything other than bring up a blank page.3. The builtin logging facilities are pretty sparse and don't have much room in their buffers, but you can point the switch at an external syslog server and it will log events there. After using the switch for about 12 hours, I can say that I'm not noticing any anomalies in basic networking operation and my Sonos system is happy.I'll raise my rating if/when Netgear can help me resolve the time sync (SNTP) issues.UPDATE 6/7/18: I am using time.google.com as my SNTP server rather than the time-f.netgear.com server that the Netgear docs suggest, and so far my switch has remained using SNTP time sync and not reverted to local time. I'll give it another week then update my review here. 3Great Gig-E Switch for Basic Needs I've bought several different versions of the GS724T since 2006, and they've performed quite well. The only one to have given me problems so far is one purchased 11 years ago (can't remember if it was the GS724Tv1 or v2) and it suffered several port failures. They're used as top-of-rack switches in a datacenter environment, where we don't require anything beyond basic layer-2 functionality. The v4 models have similar physical appearance but the user interface is much improved. These are still my favorite switches where layer-3 or advanced layer-2 functions aren't needed. 5Good, reliable, reasonably priced Love this switch. Works great, Netgear switches seem to have long life. I am looking forward to when prices drop even more but for the features this is a best buy. I used this for a customer supporting GigE WAPs, uplinks, and devices. They all run at wire rate now (which is fast!). I plan on using this for my other customers too. 5This is a great switch. I bought it so I could expand ... This is a great switch. I bought it so I could expand a 4 node stack already in place as I'm close to running out of ports, and the new line of stackable switches from Netgear isn't compatible for stacking with these (bad form, Netgear, bad form -- you forced me not to replace my whole stack of switches, but instead to stay on your older technology and accelerate an expansion just so I don't HAVE to replace everything). The switches in my current stack have been in place for over 3 years, and while I don't like the firmware upgrade procedure, these have been really rock solid. 4Solid, Unexpectedly sophisticated switch. I have two of the 24-port models, and one of the 8-port models. All work very well. The first one failed on me after a few months, but Netgear replaced it under warranty without charge. Both of the 24-port units have been in service continually since 2011.As has been noted elsewhere, they are very sophisticated switches. The good news is that you don't have to care if you don't want to.The only sophisticated feature I've really played with is LLDP. To get a more complete LLDP implementation, I had to upgrade to the latest firmware - which is quite easy, and is reasonably quick. There are so many things that are well-thought out about this switch that are quite surprising to find in products in this price range. As a note, the GUI is identical on the two types of switches.I have run into a handful of LLDP bugs, but Netgear is looking into them. It's worth noting that they've been broken for a few years and no one had noticed - so you're not likely to either ;-). I noticed because I'm implementing some LLDP software. If you are using some sophisticated LLDP software, you might notice, but that's unlikely for most people.Although I might like to give the switch 4 stars because of the LLDP bug, given that they are obscure and Netgear is looking at them (even though my products are out of warranty), and the very low price range, 5 stars seems more fair. 5Excellent This is an excellent value if you don't need all the functionality of a full blown Cisco router. We have quite a number of these around 7, and we have a few of the lower port count switches. Generally we put it twice the number of ports that we need or if we need a lot then we get three so that we could tolerate losing one of these, we could quickly repatch to other switches. You can setup more VLANs than you have ports. We control these remotely and have never had a problem. Our remote network provider requires us to use VLAN tags and this works perfectly. We ran a number of speed tests before go-live and every port is fine. These are sturdy since it is mainly steel. The rack mount ears can be a task to install since the screws are quite small.I would recommend this to a friend if they are budget minded. 5it is really good. I needed a switch that I didn't have ... For what it is, it is really good. I needed a switch that I didn't have to give a kidney for and this does that. It has LACP, VLANs, and other stuff that I don't use. I am not that fond of the web interface (lack of commit system) but I can't mark it down because I knew what I was getting into and really for what I (and most others) would use it for it is fine. Obviously would not use it in an enterprise environment, but it does work for a remote branch with a dedicated sysadmin (in my case, I am the sysadmin and my location is the remote branch) or even a small business. I was fully expecting to have to return it because I thought surely it would suck but it did not. 5
