great tool especially for the price I just bought these the other day and just had the chance to use them. I was fixing my friend's laptop power supply because his dog had chewed up the cable in a specific area. Anyways, I was able to use this tool to quickly, cleanly, and professionally cut into the wire. This is the special kind of wire that has ground unprotected once you cut the first heat shield and the positive is heat shielded in the middle of the exposed ground wire. Even with these special kinds of wires that are usually very urksome this tool worked wonderfully on. I was able to cut, solder, heat shield, and patch up the cable in no time thanks to these guys. I considered buying the much more expensive $30-$40 tool but this worked great for me. 5Quickly Became One of My Favorite ToolsI love this thing. Seriously, if you've ever had to strip electrical wire or speaker cable, you'll know it can be a real pain with basic wire strippers. It's very easy to cut too deep, sever the wire and have to start over again.As soon as I received this, I used it the same day to strip some speaker cable for some new speakers in my home theater. I first tested it out on some leftover 16 awg cable, just to get the feel for them. It stripped off the jacket, no problem. I then moved on to the 12 awg cable I was currently using and it struggled on the first try and didn't strip off the jacket. I then tightened down the adjustment knob and tried again. The jacket came off no problem. I noticed it also took a more assertive and forceful squeeze of the handles to pull it off since the outer jacket of the 12 awg was very thick but it did it every time after that. The cutting and crimping features also worked perfectly. Honestly, I had a great time using these. Most every other time I've stripped speaker cable, I've cut too deep and ended up severing the some of the cable and needed to start again making sure to be slower and more careful about it. Its made the process longer and more frustrating than it had to be. With these wire strippers, it's quick, easy and actually fun. I look forward to using them again.One thing to note, I bought the Neiko brand because pretty much all of the others are almost exactly the same, more expensive but still made in Taiwan like these. Even the Irwin and Klein models are made in Taiwan. They very well may be made in the same factory. The only noticeable difference I saw were the grips but for double the price or more, I didn't think it was worth it. Neiko is a pretty big brand for tools so I felt theirs would be just as likely to work. So you can pay for the name for basically the same Taiwan tool or less. That choice I leave to you but that's why I bought these and given the fact that they work perfectly (as of now) I think I made the right call. I'll update later if they stop working for some reason and adjust my rating accordingly. As of now, I recommend them.5Avoid these if you are left-handed!While the overall design is fantastic, and it feels durable, this product was only designed for 90% of potential users. To put it bluntly, if you are left-handed, as I am, any wire stripper that works with either hand will probably be a better choice.And what's the main reason for using an automatic wire stripper? That's correct - to make the process automatic, or at the very least, the reason for the design is so that you don't have to concentrate very much on each piece of wire that you strip.For many years, I bought the cheap speed strippers from Harbor Freight. I'd always buy 2 or 3 at a time, because they'd break after about 4-6 months of regular use. The moving parts are all either plastic or soft metal, and they get deformed or crack, and the strippers are done. There was even a time that a Harbor Freight cashier told me that instead of constantly buying cheap strippers that I should just invest in a single good one, and I never forgot that....After breaking my last cheap stripper, I decided to treat myself, and get something durable, precise, and "premium." Alas, the wire must be fed in from the left-hand side, which means you squeeze the handles with your right hand. You can't feed the wire from the right to the left because of how the mechanisms work. And you can't flip it over, because you can't see where the wire needs to go.I build small electronic devices that have a lot of wire in them, and I wear a jeweler's loop for precision of work. Each device is comprised of 24-gauge and 22-gauge wire, both solid core and stranded. I tend to go through a 50' spool of wire in as little as 2 months.I understand that someone with my handedness only accounts for 10% of the population. But 10% is not negligible, and the statistics of handedness among electricians/electronics professionals/hobbyists/others who rely on these tools - may just comprise a higher percentage.In conclusion, if you are right-handed, these could possibly be the best speed strippers (especially for the price) that you might find. But if you are left-handed, you almost certainly want a design that can be used with either hand, even if it's less durable, less comfortable, etc...2Could be a learning curve to this one but Amazing results for me! I haven't bought a new wire stripper in a decade and I am glad it is this one. It's pretty amazing but you might need to fiddle with its tension settings a bit. I bought it for USB wires and other finer type. Bought it through this seller because the fellow who does the youtube vids had some great information up about arduinos. It helps him out. He shows this unit doing multiple conductors at one time. It does that & that is why I am giving it 5 stars. Amazing! ( I hope it can keep that up. ) it seems sturdily made, better than most things these days and has multipivot point articulations which could easily suffer if they quality were not top notch. I would NOT throw this tool around in your toolbox as it could suffer and not work 100% next time you want it to function like before.The odd/neat thing is that this pulls the insulation about 1/2 inch over which for me takes a bit getting used to. But I saw a guy use this to his advantage doing it regularly along a length of wire and then soldering to that open space(a strip of LEDS in this case). Seems to be an advantage if you know how to use it this way. 5Made in China - not Taiwan as pictured.I also bought these believing they were the higher quality Taiwanese version pictured in the "From the Manufacturer" section of the item description. Mine were sold and shipped by Amazon - not a third party seller. I still received the Chinese made version instead. After holding them in my hand I realize that the photos in listing show the Chinese version, but the photos in the description show the Taiwanese version (look at the handle, the Taiwanese version is all red and rubber vs. red and black and plastic, and the cutters, the Chinese version has black painted cutters as opposed to bare metal.)Its possible that Neiko changed the product and these aren't counterfeit just a lower quality then the original. I gave them a shot and used them for a small project but they did a very poor job with stranded wire, so I am not keeping them.2I like, with reservationsFor most purposes this has become my go-to tool for wire stripping. I've used it on gauges from large to tiny and it has worked as advertised more often than it hasn't. It does fail on certain wire and insulation types (generally, wires with stretchy insulation) but the more i use it the more i recognize what type of wires i shouldn't bother trying. When it works it is a joy and when it doesn't, well, it's not really any more frustrating than accidentally cutting off the 3/4" that i meant to strip. I mean it's only fair when critiquing this tool that i remember how often i screw up with traditional methods.It does its job just as shown in the illustration, i.e., by pulling the insulation apart. So one of its more gratifying uses is for splicing into a circuit without breaking the conductor, e.g. as you might want to do for testing purposes, or hooking up auto accessories or trailer wiring. It works better than i expected in tight quarters, because all that needs done is to get the head of it around the wire and then squeeze. That's way better than pulling at the wire and banging my hand on the nearest sharp pointy thing.All that said, i can relate to the criticisms in the more unhappy reviews. There's a lot going on here for a simple job; the wire needs gripped just so, the pinchers need to meet just so, and it has to do apply pressure just so for the size and material. It all has to happen precisely and in precise sequence or it doesn't happen right, and i can see how it easily wouldn't. I don't trust it to keep working as well as it has been.Bottom line is, i bought this tool because it is different and because stripping wire is one of my least favorite activities so i thought i'd try something new. I had the $17 to play with, i only expected $17 worth of durability and reliability, and i am not attached to the outcome if it should end up in the trash. I'd only endorse this tool for those of similar circumstances and disposition.3No Longer Made By KYP. Now the Same as Any CloneAfter researching wire strippers I was excited to find the Neiko's at a reasonable price. Since they were known to be made by KYP, like the Irwins, I was happy to get something a little cheaper. When the Neiko's finally arrived they were missing the tell tale signs of a KYP wire stripper - there was no engraving near the stripper, no covers on the rear of the tool, and no indication that it was made by KYP in Taiwan. These were identical to the clone strippers that can be purchased for far less than a name brand.Despite being shipped and sold by Amazon, I was hoping that this was just a commingling issue with third party inventory so chose to return them and buy a "renewed" set which pictured the original Neiko design. I just received those today as well and they were identical to the first.It's unclear to me if Neiko has decided to rebadge cheaper clone tools or if a counterfeiter is stamping clones with Neiko branding, but this is no longer the product that was previously so highly regarded. I'm going to return the second pair and try a pair of Irwin's https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OQ21CA , which I hope are still KYP manufactured.1Most versatile stripper I've used in 40 yearsThis Neiko works by pulling the insulation off, stretching it until it snaps so the cut insulation ends are a bit jagged, and is most noticeable as insulation get thicker but importantly, its very unlikely to cut any of the wires while stripping. I found that thicker insulation requires just a touch longer length to strip as the insulation stretches a bit more before it snaps off; also the adjustable wire grip compensates for wire thickness to allow more grip or as the jaw wear with age.Before this was invented, best strippers had a fixed set of sharp AWG sized openings. You needed several strippers for different AWG wires. Those strippers worked well and fast, one squeeze they nicked the insulation just so deep and the other end pulled the ends off the insulation out. Another popular stripper has a profile of a T.Rex: you fed wire into the mouth; its front teeth gripped one end and pulled it off, and could take a wider set of AWG wires than the bladed version. The bladed version got dull with age, and if you chose the wrong slot, it could cut off a few strands of wire. All legitimate ones are from the OEM Taiwanese company KYP Tools and who invented the design in 1984. If you have a KYP, Neiko, and Irwin version side by side, they are identical except for the overmolded handles, color, lack of brand name on the OEM while the KYP has its logo in on the back of the head. KYP has at least 3 patented versions of this stripper as well as variations within each version. The Neiko model is KY665. FWIW I could not find the patent number for its claimed US patents. There are "non-KYP copies" that look similar but not identical, likely because KYP claims its patented in China. The true models are all KYP made.The enclosed photos compare a non-KYP version, Irwin, and KYP versions. You can notice similarities and differences.5Really goodNice strippers for the price. Sturdy and well made to be so inexpensive. I put my them through a work out everyday I've had them. I'm a maintenance technician my tools are important. I like to keep quality tools as they are my lively hood. Buying tools can get pretty expensive. These are a steal at this price. I've had vise-grip, alien, snap- on... etc etc... these do the same job at a lower price. So if you misplace, abuse or your co-workers have sticky fingers. I highly recommend you grab this pair. You can replace them without breaking your budget and accomplish the same task without the remose of spending/losing big bucks. I'll update if they give out anytime soon. But I doubt they will! I know my tools..5Get yourself a set of these and another set for a friend. They will be grateful and so will you! Incredible product. After getting tired of using a pair of dikes to carefully strip wires for electrical projects over the years I decided it was time to get a set of these self adjusting wire strippers. I had seen them used in the past, but never owned a pair. After receiving them I am confident in saying that ANYONE who does any sort of electrical wiring, be it for car, home, etc, needs a pair of these. Gone are the times that you accidentally strip part or all of the copper wire away when trying to get the sheathing back. This tool is beefy and I can tell that it will last for years to come. Great construction and I love the fact that you can dictate how much material you want removed from the wire (within reason). Get yourself a set of these and another set for a friend. They will be grateful and so will you! Incredible product. 5Beware. Not from Neiko.Fake. This is a rebranded WGGE WG-014. Notice the lack of screws in the area by the adjustment knob and the inserts for grabbing and stripping. Several other details wrong for a real Neiko. If I had the package this would have been returned1WRONG PRODUCT! DO NOT BUY!First of all, I'm not one to leave bad reviews for products but this definitely upset me. The product I have received is nothing like the product image nor does it have the stamping on it. This is obviously a Chinese knockoff and not the TAIWANESE built Neiko Wire strippers I was trying to purchase. I wanted the same one on the picture due to the handle style and the Country of Origin (Taiwan). The pliers bind up and are not as smooth as the ones I previously purchased and came with scuffs. I'm pleased with most Neiko tools, but this definitely put me off. If I wanted China built tools, I would've went to harbor freight and saved time and money.1Amazing Wire Stripping Performance, Great ValueI've used a lot of crappy wire stripping tools in the past that nick the wire underneath, strip too much, too little (or not at all), you name it. This Neiko stripper has been a lifesaver. In building custom professional and consumer audio wiring products, I needed to increase productivity without breaking the bank.After searching and being guided by positive reviews on this tool, I purchased one a few years ago, and was immediately shocked by the performance to value ratio of this product. The adjustable strip tension for small wires is my favorite feature. This easily strips large and rugged outer sleeving without damaging the interior, and has even proven to easily strip metal mesh sheathing for shielded cabling. I was so impressed I bought a second one as a backup. I've been using the first one for over 2 years now, and it's still going strong with moderate use.Yes, there are a lot of cheaper options, and more expensive options out there, but found this one to best fit my needs. Solid 5 stars.5
