Customer Reviews

I wanted to love it. It has been returned.First, the reviewers who say these are difficult to configure are right - and they're wrong. As a bit of background, I'm a network engineer with years of experience. I know how to configure routers. I'm also a Mikrotik vet. I've been happily running a Hap Lite as my router for a few years. Wanting a bit more speed and a stronger signal throughout the house, I bought this baby.I plugged it in, ran through the setup. Nothing. I ran Winbox, logged into my router and found its IP. Then Winboxed to that. Changed this setting. Changed that. Broke things. Reset the router. Took a break. Came back, repeat process. I had it all working, except that anything that logged into the AP got a 169 IP - not good. Reset it again. Finally found an overly simplistic web page and configured it that way. Bam. A day of frustration, but now I could see my 5.0 and 2.4 networks. Connected. Ran a speed test. Got half the speed of my old router. That's not right... Walked into the room, literally a few feet of nothing but air, ran the test again. Better, but still not as good as my old 2.4 from 30 feet and a few walls away.I'll go with something else - something that can deliver some speed. This wasn't it. And it took a lot of effort to figure that out. 2Excellent SOHO WAPI've used a number of MikroTik / RouterBoard products in my home network as well as small business networks. They are very flexible and loaded with features at a fraction of the price that more well-known brands like Cisco carry. With that said, you will definitely need to have some networking and general technical expertise to work with these products. You won't be able to just unbox it and plug it into your network.Basic management can be done via a web interface, but real configuration will need to be done with the free WinBox management tool.I was able to cover a 1600 sq ft home with a single AP providing excellent coverage and throughput. 5What a Wireless Access Point should be -- Powerful, reliable, at competitive price. As a systems administrator for over eight years, I've played with more than a few wireless access points. The WAP AC is currently my go-to unit -- the most capable wireless access point for under $800 I've ever worked with. With a lot of power comes the potential for complexity, this enterprise-level equipment is not for a beginner. These products work amazingly well as simple Wireless Access Points for a house or small office, but they run on software designed for professionals - focused specifically on Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP).The WAP AC has 3x3 MIMO, so expect it to realistically handle 45 clients on either band (2.4GHz & 5GHz, 15 clients for each of the three antennas). Gigabit NIC, lots of speed, small package, comes with mounting hardware and PoE Injector. Device has omni-directional internal antennas in a weather-proof box (Heat, rain, and snow, as long as you install it correctly)The single most impressive feature about the WAP AC, is due to having dedicated antennas (not just microscopic printed traces on a circuit board), and excellent electrical design, the noise floor of the units is extremely sensitive at -115dB, with a maximum transmit power of +29dB. For comparison, the main competitor to this product -- The Ubiquiti UAP Pro, has a -95dB noise floor with max transmit power of +32dB. This may not seem like a big difference, but because the noise floor is so incredibly low on a logarithmic scale, you get far more "bang for your buck" -- client devices get better speeds at farther ranges. It is not uncommon to get a usable 90' radius range of signal for a high-density (read: interference) environment. I get the same usable range out of a WAP AC running at only +16dB as a UAP Pro running at +30dB. This works fine for a single unit, but even better for high-signal density by combining multiple WAP to create a single large wireless network at lower power for higher quality signal with less units, less is more. The second reason my company has switched entirely to the WAP AC -- reliability. I don't have to reboot random units every 2-3 months due to memory leaks, they simply just keep working and I don't have to think about them anymore. Even if you were worried about memory leaks with the Mikrotik, you can use the scheduler to schedule reboots on a timer, lots of features. The third reason we switched -- compatibility with Apple devices - especially the group-key-update timeouts and long/both preamble options. Ubiquiti's UniFi product line has massive incompatibilities with Apple devices (iPads, iPhones, Macbook, etc), which can be seen in random loss of connectivity (internet suddenly just stops working, until you disconnect/reconnect). Ubiquiti blames it on Apple's chipset drivers, Apple says to pound sand and it's UBNT's fault, Mikrotik simply makes a WAP that works and offers a lot of power and options in a small box for a good price.Buy a unit, put it through it's paces, test the heck out of it. When you personally experience what the WAP AC is capable of for under $100, you'll want to buy a whole lot more. Enjoy! 5Works great. Good coverage.I live in an area that doesn't have cell coverage. My career requires me to be on call. The wireless access point enables me to be outside mostly anywhere in the yard and still stay connected to the wifi. Coverage over 200' away, line of sight. Trees block the signal quite well when they are tight together. The WAP installed easily and has been reliable. 5Outstanding for the pricePlug into a lan port on your existing router and this will simply work as is. Log in at 192.168.88.1 and you can change network name and add security as desired. Not that difficult. Works excellent. 5Replaced two Ubiquity AP's for this single unit and my ...Replaced two Ubiquity AP's for this single unit and my WIFI speed is much faster with far less drops or interference. I am using it indoors as my primary access point. 5Best AP I've used so farAmazing performance and options for such a small and inexpensive device.Standard configurations are easy to setup for general purpose use, but there is a ton of power in terms of configuration. I have this system setup with virtual wireless networks that are separated from the rest of my network using a VLAN to another Mikrotik router. I'm able to monitor the status of this device remotely with SNMP, view logs, setup firewalls, and anything I can imagine. There are more configuration options on this device than I'll ever need. 5Takes some trial and error to deploy but works well.Had to play around with some of the settings to get it to provision correctly with CAPsMAN since there are no recommended settings provided, but other than for the trial and error time spent on it, it works flawlessly. 5Excellent AP!!!!Works like charm!!!!! 5Low cost WiFi AC AP for houses and businesses.Added this to my home network after only using a 2.4Ghz built on to my Mikrotik CRS125-24G-1S-2HnD-IN because I wanted better performance WiFi on the far end of my house and AC speeds. Ran a Cat-6 cable from my office to my kitchen, used the included mounting hardware to put it on the ceiling, and the POE injector by my router/switch. Now I have wonderful speeds and no performance loss throughout my house. These guys are low cost enough in a large house you could put up 2 of them for the price of one Ubiquity AC AP. The configuration is easy enough if you're familiar with RouterOS, I don't use CAPsMAN system to configure it, but I may in the future as I am running it as a WISP AP in Bridge mode just fine.Testing speeds using my desktop and my Google Pixel XL and iperf3 shows speeds of ~250Mbps across the house using 80Mhz of channel width. I am working on adding 2 of these to my works office to replace an aging Unifi AP and removing the controller that is just for that AP. 5
