Customer Reviews

Excellent antenna, especially for the price. I am using this with the Midland 75-822. I verified two+ miles range after quickly tuning channels 1-30 below and SWR of 2:1. couldn't get ten of the channels below 2:1 but they were well below 3:1, but then again, i didn't really try that hard. I was very glad to trade a bit of performance for less weight and size. Don't bother buying a $40+ antenna that you will still need to tune. Get this one and spend the extra money on a SWR meter and jumper cable. I started out with the top antenna fully inserted into the loading coil. It needed to come out about an inch or so. 5Good Inexpensive Antenna I'm using this antenna with a Midland 75-822 CB radio. The antenna gets decent range mounted on the roof of my SUV and signals are clear. My only complaint is the plastic molded form around the radio connector. It makes it difficult to run the coax cable since it is not removable and the other end is hard wired to the antenna. That being said, this works remarkably well for a cheap antenna. 4Good and reliable antenna This item arrived one day ahead of the scheduled delivery date, and the product description was accurate. The atenna has a plastic base that encases the magnent, but it is well-constructed. The antenna coil is solid and sealed. It came with an allen wrench to tune the antenna. It was easy to install and place the rubber-protected magnent on the trunk of my car while still having adequate holding strength. I used my Diamond SWR meter to properly tune the top section of the antenna for the middle of the band using the provided allen wrench. Range from car to car was about 4 miles separation (via driving) for the quick road test. The signal on both ends using identical radios and antennas was strong and perfectly readable in suburban areas. I would recommend this product. 5Great for the money, cheapest antenna out there I have had this antenna on my roof for about 5 months now. I haven't heard any rattling and it still looks great. The cord for this antenna is long enough that I was able to have it go around my truck shell between the cab and the bed, and along the frame up to a hole in the floor pan and to my CB. There is still a bit of cord to spare. 5Great mag mount antenna, make sure to tune it properly I think they've increased the price of this antenna around the Gambler 500--it used to be $13, it's now pushing $20. It works well, but to get more than short line-of-sight range, you'll want to tune it with some sort of SWR meter. 4Fair weather antenna Bought this for my cobra 29. Adjusted the antenna to a 1.1 swr. When it rains the antenna warning light comes on. And the swr is too high. You have to dry the moisture from under the magnetic base and put it exactly where it was. Considering a fixed mount antenna. 2so be sure to order the part or you will be waiting like me. Wish they would have offered the part ... When I ordered my book that came with my Midland portable CB said this was the correct antenna for external mount portable unit, well it may be but you still need an adaptor to get it to hook up to radio, so be sure to order the part or you will be waiting like me. Wish they would have offered the part as part of a package to make it a lot simpler. 3Still performs better than the more recent TRAM 703-HC antenna! Still performs better than the more recent TRAM 703-HC antenna! The only difference between the Midland 12-2442 and TRAM 703-HC antennas, the Midland has a solid core RG-58AU instead of a stranded core. The dimensions for the base and center load all appear the same. I have heard something on the Internet forums stating the Tram version is rated for 300 watts, but I found nothing within any printed product description stating the same. Since the wattage handling is dependent upon the weakest link, likely the center load and based upon those dimensions, likely the same wattage handling as the Midland. Or in other terms, the center load wiring gauge is likely the same as the Tram's center load wiring gauge. Both the Tram and this Midland have a 3/8 24 sized male bolt/thread, so they likely can be permanently affixed using a mirror mount base to luggage racks or other roof racks. Just make sure you check the luggage rack provides a ground using a volt meter continuity test, or just afix a ground strap between the rack and rack mount bolt/screw.As soon as I attached this Midland antenna, I achieved 1.0 SWR on channel 40, and further tuned channel 1 & 40 for very close 1.0-1.1 SWR! The TRAM 703-HC I only saw erratic 1.8-2.3 SWR, and now apparently permanently 3.0+ SWR due to a loose/broken connection somewhere? Replaced cabling with LMR-400, and still erratic and high, so could be a broken center load or further loose connection elsewhere. Surprising performance when compared to the newer TRAM! 5Not bad for the price, little ball on the tip broke off though For $20, you can hear clearly and transmit clear out of it (after tuning with SER meter). However, I did drive under a clearance sign and the tip of the antenna hit it. The little ball on the tip of the antenna came off, and it wasn't a hard hit either, so just be careful of hitting it on things above the vehicle if it's mounted on the roof. When the ball came off the SWR went way up and I was unable to properly tune it after that because I ran out of antenna to lengthen it any further to bring the SWR down. As long as you don't hit it against things (like parking garage clearance signs, lol) it's a great little antenna.Paired with a Uniden 510XL radio. 4Nice basic CB/Weather antenna Nice basic CB/Weather antenna. It's not a high end mag mount antenna, but for basic CB usage works fine. Tuning the SWR was very ease. Easer then a lot of other antennas I have used in the past. I was able to get 1.0 to 1.5 SWR reading on tested CB channels. It also picks up weather channels great. 4
