Customer Reviews

Good quality flash Very good flash that I used on a Nikon D5300 DSLR. Does eat battery but it is a power flash after all. Many settings for optimizing picture quality 5Great while it worked for 10 months... Bought this ring flash back in September of 2014. I have to give it credit, because for the price, it worked great for me for taking dental photos in residency for almost a year (only reason for the extra star).Unfortunately, as of last week out of nowhere, the ring flash started to flash on only one side. I had read other reviews where the bulbs burned out, but wiggling the wire at the main unit proved to be the reason for the failure. Depending on how I bend the wire, I could get it to flash both sides or not at all by wiggling the wire. This obviously is a large problem. What I have to also add is that I baby my equipment. I'm not the guy that has his computer adapter in knots, but rather wrapped up neatly all the time. For this failure to occur must mean Meike used extremely flimsy and cheap wire to run from the main unit to the flash ring, despite the outer insulation feeling quite durable. So, I am left with contacting Meike, which is based in China, and thus impossible to contact via phone. I have submitted a ticket with them, and I will update this review as the process unfolds. My other concern about the returns process is that it appears I may have to ship this back to China for repair. Given the initial price of the flash unit, this may not make time nor monetary sense. 2I wanted to like this, and I did. ...right up until it failed. I really wanted to like this flash. It feels fairly solid and well built. It's got a decent "feel" to it. It also takes pretty good pictures, ...I think.I say "I think" because I wasn't able to use it long before one of the flash bulbs failed, blackening a large spot on the inside of the built in diffuser. I had probably shot less than 100 photos before it failed. I hadn't even run down the first set of batteries I'd put in it.While I had it, I used it for macro-photography of insects and reptiles. It's got a good deal of flexibility and it took me a few shots each time, to get the flash to the correct intensity. Overall, it took some great photos. But then it then you have to take into account the incredibly short working lifespan of this one.I probably won't order another one. I'll either go with a couple of slaved flashes, or buy a more expensive (and hopefully more reliable) ring flash. 2Fully Functional Ring Flash with Near Professional Quality. I'm an amature that's been taking photographs for three decades and this is my first flash. I never wanted one, or needed one, until now. I like to stick with OEM whenever possible especially when it comes to glass, but with flashes I just can't justify $500 yet. So here I am looking at all the many, many CHEAP $50 LED Rings (not flashes) and I just can't see anything of satisfying quality or functionality, until I finally stumbled across this.I absolutely love this flash, it's fully featured and functional. High quality materials, design, and assemblage. The plastic used is well formulated, consistent, and strong. Full communication with camera. Quick, easy, and intuitive menu and interface. A must for macro work. Solid. I mean, seriously, take a look at the cord this thing has and compare that to everything else on the market. This was made for output.Twice the price of an LED Ring and a quarter the price of OEM, but ALL the function of a REAL Professional Ring Flash.Focusing lamps ASSIST well in a pitch black room at a distance of 40 feet, even though they are made for close-ups. The picture was in focus, and the flash at 1/1 F5.6 ISO600 lit the darkness and filled up the room. The flash fully covers at the minimum focal length of Nikon 85mm f/3.5 AF-S DX too.80 degree flash coverage in either direction. Both sides of the flash are fully controllable from 1/1 to 1/128.Exposure output is adjustable from 0 to 3 in 1/3's.Quickly change the ratio side to side from 8:1 to 1:8 in steps of 1 at the push of a single button.Recycle time is rather fast considering the output, with fresh NiMH batteries I got about 3 seconds recycle with 1/1. Added CP-E4 battery pack (8AA in addition to 4AA in flash) takes it down to just under 1 second recycle for 1/1. Maximum 15 continuous at 1/1.When the Nikon Data LCD is illuminated, the LCD on the flash fully illuminates too.The Ring Flash is fully shrouded on the interior, ensuring there will never be a light halo.It comes with 7 adaptor rings made out of durable plastic. I suggest using the 77mm adaptor ring and then use an aluminum step ring to save the plastic threads. Use of a step ring also allows for the same lens cap to be used. The flash ring is considerably loose when mounted to the adaptor ring, an easy solution is to place a rubber band flat on the bottom of the channel of the adaptor ring. You'll have to depress the release buttons on either side of the ring to purposefully rotate the flash once the rubber band is in place.Manual resting for 10 minutes is needed when frequent flash use reaches a maximum, see the manual. This is very important to pay attention to, more expensive flashes will have automatic safety interrupts and limiters set in place to increase the time in between uses, this flash doesn't. If it starts to smell, let it rest for a spell.Sleep Mode is entered automatically after 60 seconds of non-use, 1/2 press the Shutter Release to wake the flash then expect a second or so wait for the capacitors to top off.Has an External Power Source Socket (Canon CP-E4), PC Sync Terminal, 1/4-20 mount, solid battery door and shoe lock.Even though this is my first flash, I have used quite a few high-end flashes and strobes throughout the years; I am very happy and couldn't be more pleased with this flash. In a month or ten years when this flash finally fails, there's nothing stopping me from replacing the caps and tubes myself... (most likely $30 to $60 for parts and labor at a local electronics repair shop). After almost a year of use and about 300 flashes, everything is still working and original. I am sorry to read of a few bad experiences with the quality of the tubes: I would have to suggest to return the item and have it replaced with a new one, or if the tubes fail after the return window, then replace the tube; as that will only cost $13 at most. Tubes fail on Nikon and Canon Flashes too, and back in the day the capacitors failed all the time as well. You don't have to throw things away, in many cases you can make them better by repairing them.I'm hanging onto this awesome flash. If you want something better, spend $400 more. The external battery pack I got for this flash:External Flash Battery Pack Replacement for CP-E4 for CANON 600EX, Speedlite 580EX II, 580EX, 550EX, MT-24EX, MR-14EX, Yongnuo 565ex, Nissin Di866 Mk1 Flashes + MagicFiber Microfiber Cleaning ClothGreat batteries to use:eneloop XX 2500mAh Typical / 2400 mAh Minimum, High Capacity, 4 Pack AA Ni-MH Pre-Charged Rechargeable BatteriesGreat fully functional chargers:La Crosse Technology BC-700 Alpha Power Battery Chargerand/orTitanium Smart Fast 16 Bay Ni-MH AA/AAA Battery Charger AC 100-240V + DC Adapters MD-1600LNever leave your batteries in the flash or the battery pack, store them in this:Storacell by Powerpax AA 12-Pack Battery Caddy, YellowAn inexpensive artistic continuous circle (with diffuser) catch light for close-up photography:Polaroid 48 Macro LED Ring Flash & Light Includes 4 Diffusers (Clear, Warming, Blue, White) For The Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax SLR Cameras (Will Fit 49,52,55,58,62,67,72,77mm Lenses)Or, if you want even more light output from a steady light:Polaroid 18 Super Bright Macro SMD LED Ring Flash & Light Includes 4 Diffusers (Clear, Warming, Blue, White) For The Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax SLR Cameras (Will Fit 49,52,55,58,62,67,72,77mm Lenses)There's trade-offs with both of those two versions, the lower lumen 48 count will offer a smooth full circle catch (something true ring flashes cannot provide), while the high lumen 18 count will work better for microphotography, but it's not as smooth of a catch.Or if you want a full circle catch light for glamour and portraiture:Ardinbir Photography 500W 5400K Macro Ring Light Lamp for Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Sony, Leica, Olympus SLR/DSLR Cameras, Photo Studio and Portrait 5Works great! Works great with both my Nikon D7100 and Nikon D90. These make flash macro shots MUCH easier than working out external lighting or trying to avoid shadows from a standard sb900 type flash and a long lens. If you've been experimenting with macro work you will really enjoy the convenience this flash brings vs other lighting methods - at least other methods that I've tried. i-TTL works on both of those cameras. I haven't bothered to try it on my old D60 but I think the TTL signals are all the same so it should work with any Nikon.I do have one minor complaint. There is a variety of "adapter rings" that are included with the flash. I've lost one and am not sure where to go for a replacement. Currently I can't use this with one of my flashes as a result. Also, these adapter rings are plastic and screw into the front of your lens just like a filter would attach. I am presuming they will get cross threaded and wear out eventually. If the manufacturer sees this and has replacements available then please let me know!As an aside, I'm usually a "brand guy". This is the first non Nikon branded camera part I've purchased and so far so good. 4Exposure is good and recharge times are quick I wanted a basic ring flash and as I am a noob in photography I wanted something which supports TTL.. It fits well with all the lenses I own the plethora of adapters that are bundled. Exposure is good and recharge times are quick. The LED guide lights are not very powerful but works well for close up photos. The only thing i would have liked is a way to lock on the flash in the position I want. If I want the flash tubes to be in the up and down position there is no way I can just lock it on. Otherwise it is bang for the buck 4Miss-Sized 77mm Adaptor Ring Solves lighting requirements for macro photography at a very reasonable cost. Unit is quite full functioned and provides adequate (usually excessive) lighting that requires reduced exposure compensation. Once you practice / learn the intensity you can work around. Unit appears to be of decent quality and well built except for the critical adapter rings which are plastic. The 77mm adapter is incorrectly sized (too large) and I needed to install a 77mm to 72mm step down ring so I can use the supplied 72mm adapter (not ideal). Also as previously mentioned by others, the ring flash spins around the adapter and doesn't stay in a fixed position thereby requiring placing a rubber band in the adapter groove to provide friction and stability. Another omission was not including a 49mm adapter so we can use the popular Raynox Super Macro DCR-250 conversion lens which requires 49mm. I held the ring in front of the lens and obtained decent results. Guess I could place a 49mm step up ring to the front of the Raynox that matches one of the supplied Miele adapter rings. My biggest gripe is the furnished miss-sized 77mm plastic adapter ring as I wanted to mount the flash directly to my Canon 77mm 500D Close-up lens without utilizing a 77mm to 72mm step down ring. Amazon and others on the web do not sell individual adapters or a full set for the Miele Mk-14ext for Nikon. Overall I still give this unit 4 stars as it works and is reasonably priced. I will keep the unit and work around the shortcomings. If anyone knows where I could pick up the properly sized 77 mm adapter for this unit it would be greatly appreciated. 4I like everything about it I like everything about it. It's so easy to use the only thing is I had to read the instruction on the lighting, settings also easy. Two things I should add, the box said leather carrying bag, it's nylon. Warranty card there wasn't one. The product was more than I expected well made. 5Meike MK-14EXT Macro TTL ring flash for Nikon i-TTL I was looking for an inexpensive macro ring light flash and came across this item. Considering that the next cheapest ring flash that has TTL capability is the Sigma model for around $350.00, this unit is quite a value! For the occasional hobbyist macro shooter such as myself, this is a great option! However, I wouldn't recommend this product for professional use since it isn't built to withstand the abuse that pro equipment sometimes gets. The filter thread adapters to mount the unit are plastic, and I could see the threads easily getting stripped if one isn't careful! Also, the unit freely rotates on the lens adapter which I don't like, but this was easily fixed by placing a rubber band around the adapter.Another thing I'll mention is that Meike also has the MK-14EXM model which is cheaper and looks identical to this model. It took a little research for me to discover that the difference is the MK-14EXM DOES NOT have TTL ability. If the TTL feature is important to you, make sure you buy the MK-14EXT. There are some LED ring lights on Amazon for as cheap as $35.00, these also do not offer TTL.Pro: Great inexpensive macro ring flash for a hobbyist photographer.Con: Not of a build quality for pro use. 4better than my $400 sigma been using one a year heavy use in dental office. no failures at all. better than my $400 sigma. so I bought two more Meike. Update: these Meike units continue to amaze, years later. Just decided to replace one after 3 years use, which is about the same endurance as the Sigma, but less than 1/4 the price. We are takin a dozen pictures a day in the dental office with these lights for clinical diagnostic photography. 5
