Customer Reviews

Repeat purchase of a great, reliable rewritable DVD. I bought this same Maxell DVD-RW spindle through Amazon 2 years ago. After many years of trying different brands, I finally had blank DVDs that my computers did not reject. This is a "Thank God!" product.I had zero problems with any of the 15 disks. No losses. All of them work perfectly. Videos, movies, and music are top notch. Saving documents, various file types, and digital art are perfect.I love being able to write, edit, delete, reformat, and use these disks for all my disk storage needs. I have only had one thing I could not use one of these DVD disks for -- to copy an embroidery program which happened to require use of a CD not a DVD. It was very type specific. That happens.I just used the last one about 2 months ago. I had saved my 2012 Amazon packing slip for these disks so that I would be able to buy exactly the same ones again.I'm so delighted Amazon still carries these Maxell 635117 4.7 GB Rewritable DVD-RW 15 pack spindles. The price being even lower now is a winner, too.If you've had trouble recording to DVDs on your computer or your just looking for a really good rewritable DVD, I highly recommend this particular product by Maxell. 5So far so good. Used once so far & no issues. Great DVDs for document backups. I write a great deal, most of the time in fact and I do quite a lot of backups and storing my files. I'm paranoid about losing stuff and always store on more than one media. I've had great success with TDK +R DVDs for this task without any issues. Then, I made the mistake of purchasing verbatim -R to do the same thing and that was a total disaster. (See separate review.) Thus, I needed to purchase replacement DVDs and I chose these. I've used them twice so far for storing files and opening and changing them without issues. So far, so good. Should this change I will update this review, but so far, I liked these. They're doing what they're supposed to do for me, but I now realize that DVDs unlike CDs are more apt to be manufactured and burned for consume use with lots of errors, ie defects so that when we get them they don't work as they should.Overall, a great DVD for storing and backing up documents for me. I don't know about movies, because I don't use them for that. 5Sloooooow Recording Speed Just received these and was shocked to see that the recording speed is listed as 1-2X !!! (and I had to put on reading glasses and use a magnifier to see that on the package). That alone would've told me the quality was inferior as most Rewriteable discs allow 4X recording and even then I set the speed at 2X to insure that if a disc is not quite up to snuff it will still record at 2X but they usually record at 4X. 1-2X is far too slow and I would probably choose half the speed on most discs to insure a good copy, but that's just way too slow when their max is 2X! Even if these all work I'm not happy. I should've read more reviews I couldn't believe a disc that was getting 4.4 out of five stars would have such a slow recording speed! 1Wish I had thought of buying your DVD RWs sooner! It's great to be able to reformat (thus erase) DVDs since I do a LOT of recording of shows from my cable (ATT uVerse) TV that I can bring over to my girlfriend's house to watch with her, since she doesn't have some of the pay stations that I have at my home. I've started writing the names of the shows that I record on index cards that I place in the DVD sleeve along with the corresponding DVD so that, after we watch the recorded shows on a DVD I take it back home and (after re-formatting it) I can record some new shows on it (and write on a new index card) to later bring over to her home and watch THOSE shows with her. (she has Comcast) I wish that I had bought RW discs sooner as I have used up a LOT of regular DVDs that I have recorded on in the past--only 10% being "keepers" that I have added to my personal collection. I have both a DVR (from ATT) as well as a Sanyo VHS/DVD player recorder that is connected to my DVR so I can both record shows that are saved on my DVR OR record shows direct from my TV to a DVD R or RW. QUESTION: What would be a TV transmission that would require me to first format your RW disc in VR mode (thus rendering it CPRM one-time-record-only) compatible? My Sanyo VCR mentions in the owner's manual that I must make a DVD-RW CPRM compatible before recording certain shows (or channels?) but, for the life of me, I don't know what type of show or channel that the manual refers to, and I have called Sanyo several times and NO ONE seems to know! I have found that--whether I format the disc in Video or VR mode, I STILL cannot record (direct to DVD disc) certain channels like HBO or Starz (paid subscription channels) or non-subscription channels like the National Geographic Channel (NG and NGW) and some others. WHAT is a channel that I would have to use a CPRM compatible disc for in order to record it? I can't find even ONE!!! 5Batting a thousand! With almost all rewritable dvd disk spindles, there will be a few that won't work but instead will produce an error message saying, "this disk cannot be recorded on". After a terrible experience with another brand, I braced myself for a repeat of frustration with an unusable product. The first one produced such an error message so I took it out, put it back in the tray, and ran it back through. It loaded and formatted just fine then. In total, 5 of 15 had to be attempted twice but they all worked. The other 10 loaded and formatted right off the bat. The recording and play back quality are excellent. How remarkable buying 15 of anything and everything's good; nothing had to be thrown away. Batting a thousand ain't half bad-- it's incredible! I've found the brand that I want to use from now on.Good job Maxell. Please don't change a thing. 5Error Message These discs didn't work with my Toshiba DVD Recorder. I kept getting an ERROR message, saying cannot record on this disc. I normally buy the Maxell DVD+RW and never had a problem with them. I tried these DVD-RW because of the cheaper price; but it didn't work out. 1Solid and Dependable I've been using these little gems for burning movies from a Tivo in a Toshiba 570 DVD recorder with excellent results. There have been no write error messages and I have not seen any instances of drop-outs for either video or audio. Movies which were saved at best quality then recorded at best quality seem to be identical. The only difference I have noted is some degradation of signal when recording in SP mode or slower but I believe that is more a function of the lower quality of recording at the slower speeds, not the fault of the media. I have experienced similar signal loss when using other brands of media when recorded at SP or slower. To date, I have not had any issues or quality drop-off when re-writing over an already used disc. I doubt I'll ever re-write enough to find the acual limitations which most manufacturers claim to be up to 1000 times.I can confidently recommend these Maxell media. 5Works well for older dvd recorders One of the more frustrating things that can happen when purchasing dvd disks is discovering that they do not work in your particular recorder. These disks are rated at 1-2x max speed and work well in my older recorder which cannot record at higher speeds. Even checking your owner's manual will not always disclose the proper disk speed rating to be used in a particular machine. I had to find this out for myself by reading other user's experiences with machines of the same brand and model as the one I own. So if you have an older recorder, make sure the disk type and speed matches the requirements of your machine, otherwise the disks will be useless. Another thing is to actually check the product description carefully, not all vendors will state the disk speed in the description details...so you may have to check the brand/model number of the disk elsewhere to make sure it matches your machine. I took away one star for the fact that this vendor did not list this crucial piece of info from its product description, otherwise the disks perform fine. 4Great Price, SLOW '2X' speed I love Maxell media and have been using it for decades - everything from cassette tape to Reel-to-Reel tape. First time using the DVD-RW's, and they so far are every bit as good and comparable to other major-brand discs. My only gripe (and this is purely my fault for not noticing prior to purchase) is this is 2X speed media. It takes about 28 minutes to burn a full DVD using these blanks. Not a big deal for what I am using them for, but that is a huge time difference from 4X DVD-R's (14 minutes) and 8X speed DVD-RW's (about 8 minutes) that I am accustomed to using the past several years.Again, no issues with the quality, and the price is excellent. The "2X" is visible in the picture, but the speed is not mentioned anywhere in the title or the product description that I could see.If you want inexpensive, quality blank DVDs that can be used over and over again, these are a great choice. If you want to spit out multiple copies of whatever it is that you are burning, or do any type of high volume or time intensive work, these are not for you. This review is intended to highlight the (nearly hidden) fact that these are 2X recording speed DVD-RW discs. 4Some of them work, some of them fail. I purchased this pack of DVDs a while ago to copy home movies and videos from the internet. I normally use DVD Flick to burn my files. I always make sure to burn my movies at the lowest possible speed to minimize the potential of errors. Unfortunately, my experience with this particular pack of DVDs has been a bit frustrating. Out of the 15 DVDs that came in the pack about 5 of them were unusable. They would just not burn properly. With a normal DVD you would normally just throw away and get a new one. I was hoping that this would not be the case with this pack since they were RW. That turned out not to be the case though. The DVDs would not format and Microsoft File Explorer would not even recognize them. I ended up throwing them away. It was a bigger headache and time waster than anything. The other DVDs that i did managed to burn on have worked very well. Most of them i have burn and formatted several times. They have played well on DVDs and Blu Ray player without any problem.I am somewhat satisfied with this pack but will probably purchase a different brand in the future. If you do decide to buy this pack just keep in mind that a couple of the discs are going to be duds. I am not one to use write on DVDs often but i keep this in reserve just in case for the occasional home movie. My experience with this pack has been a mixed back to say the least. Out of the 15 DVDs about 5 failed miserably. I use 3
