Customer Reviews

A Win-Win for Bob and Lynn I bought this deal of the day for like $108, I was mostly interested in getting an extra charger and battery for my Makita power tools. It turns out my wife loves this rechargeable vacuum so much, I'm actually a little jealous. I always thought I'd be replaced by a puppy. The charge lasts for an entire light vacuuming of a two story house. No, it won't replace your central vac. But for the money, it does a nice job tidying things up a bit. And yes, it has also been handy after using my power tools all day, to have a second charger to work simultaneously with my first charger getting all my lithium batteries fully refreshed. 5Great lightweight battery powered vacuum Great lightweight battery powered vacuum. Sort of like a Dustbuster on steroids. Just know this package comes with the smaller 2.0 amp battery. No problem as I have 3 of the 4 amp batteries. I generally use the 2 amp on my LED worklight but it certainly works on the vacuum just not as long. We zip around the house just pointing the crevice tool at clumps of dog hair. It devours them with relish. Remember that the storage canister is small and it will require frequent emptying. We love this vacuum. May buy a 2nd one to keep in the RV. 5Easy to pull out and easy to use I saw this being recommended by a Japanese blogger Hiroshi Matsui. This is great.. Because it doesn't have to be connected to an outlet,it is easy to take this out and start cleaning without feeling lazy. It works great especially when the surface is slippery (e.g., tiles). On the carpet just at first it may feel sluggish to move the machine around, but you will quickly get used to the right angle to push it or pull it smoothly. When Hiroshi wrote a post about it, many readers of his blog responded with enthusiasm some saying they even have two of these. The battery charger looks like it works also for other types of batteries if I get an accessory for it. The only negative thing I noticed was that I am not exactly sure what filter to order additionally at the time of ordering. It does come with one paper-like filter, which seems to last for a while. I will have to figure out exactly what product I should order when it becomes too dirty. I think this makes a difference to how our rooms look like because this thing is really easy to pull out and use it. I highly recommend this product. 5The Makita vacuum is terrific for what I needed - picking up dirt and ... The Makita vacuum is terrific for what I needed - picking up dirt and cat litter/hair from tile floor in kitchen area at least once a day, and also a tile entry way on occasion. I find myself using the Makita other times during the day or night because it so easy to grab for a quick cleanup for a few minutes. Convenient! I had tried three different corded stick vacs in recent years, and the last one was great but I realized the rotating brush was scratching the tile; it was also time consuming to have to unwind and wind the cord every day for my morning cleaning routine. I tried one other cordless vacuum, but hated it after one use and sent it back as it did not feel right how the weight was distributed, and it had to sit in a bulky floor stand stand to charge (cumbersome and then you had to remove once charged). In comparison, the Makita battery charge unit can sit on a counter top and is quick to charge (25 minutes or less). Highly recommend the Makita vacuum for tile floors. The rubber edge on the end of floor attachment keeps dirt from kicking back out that I experienced in past stick vacs. Holding the button to run is a slight inconvenience, I do have to trade hands back and forth. The fact that it does not continually run means you can move around the room or house to only use in areas you need to vacuum. I love the Makita! Worth the additional money to me and expect to use it for years to come. 5Not Makita at its best After using this for a few weeks, I'm underwhelmed. This is not Makita's best effort. I recently invested in some Makita LXT tools (which are great) and I wanted to maximize my investment by replacing my cheap Black & Decker BDH2000SLB vac with the Makita so I only have one kind of batteries and chargers. It hasn't worked out as I hoped, and here are the reasons why...CON:* Suction sucks, compared to the $38 Black & Decker. The B&D has almost twice the suction that traps your hand against the nozzle almost like a fullsize vac. The Makita is weak and wimpy by comparison.* Expensive - costs more than twice as much as the B&D and is half as strong - I expect to get better for the Makita premium price, not worse.* Dumb spring-loaded trigger switch must be continually held. B&D has a slide switch that makes much more sense. If you vacuum for an extended period with the Makita, you have to switch fingers as they get fatigued.* Poorly designed filter with little surface area that easily gets clogged, and hard to clean. I find a paint brush works ok to clean, but the B&D has an automotive-style pleated filter that you can just whack against the inside of the garbage pail, much more dirt capacity, resists clogging, and easier to clean.* Poorly designed dirt compartment attachment. Perfectly round with no keys, so it's possible to place it in the wrong position where it won't latch. Dumb.* The battery in this kit was just loose with no Makita packaging - is it an authentic Makita or a knock-off?? One reviewer complained that it died after a few months, which doesn't sound like authentic Makita. The button to test charge on my battery is loose and not like my other Makita batteries.PRO* If you already have Makita LXT tools/batteries/chargers then this vacuum can use the same batteries* Comfortable rubberized handle* Nice that it comes with an extension and floor attachment. If it had more suction power, the floor attachment would work much better tho.* Fairly quiet for a vac of this type. Now before you rush out to buy the Black and Decker, that also has some annoying design flaws: the air exhaust is directed straight down at the back, where it scatters whatever you're trying to vacuum up, doh! And it makes a really high-pitched and loud noise like a screaming banshee. So, it's not perfect either, but once you learn to always move forward over the mess instead of backward, and if you wear earplugs, then at least you get really strong suction for your money with the B&D. Ah well, must keep searching for the perfect hand vac... 3Good quality vacuum I am replacing a Black+Decker which I purchased 3 yrs ago through amazon. B&D was a good vacuum and did well for 3 yrs with no issues until the battery died. The only thing I did not like about it was the internal battery and that is why I searched for other handheld vacuum cleaners to replace it with. I knew I do not want to have Dyson handheld because they are over priced and worst part is the customer svc experience I had with Dyson previously for a different product. As I was searching I came across This makita vacuum cleaner and the more I read about it the more I liked it. Specially I do routine wood working and many of the makita power tools are my favorite tools. It became much more easier choice because my 18V batteries can work with this vacuum plus the white color (instead of the traditional blue/green makita color) is better fit for indoor use.I will update this review again but so far I love every thing about this new makita addition that I got. 5Mediocre I was looking for an inexpensive 2-in-1 vacuum to handle hard floors and rugs around the house, as well as my car. I'm amazed at all the 5-star reviews, as there is really nothing outstanding abut this vacuum. Yes, the battery charges quickly -- that is a plus. And it can be reused with other Makita products, apparently (I don't own any). But the vacuum itself is mediocre at best.It handles hard floors mostly fine (though it still can take multiple sweeps to pick things up), low-pile rugs can be a struggle, and carpet... don't even bother! This thing is too weak to pick nearly anything out of carpet. And its lack of any real wheels on the bottom mean you're essentially just dragging this plastic object across your carpet. In the car, with the proper attachment it can generally pick up most visible debris with repeated sweeps over the same areas. Definitely not impressive, but it gets the job done. And once you're done, be sure to empty it out every time because the filter gets covered quickly and then you lose even more suction. Cleaning it out can get fairly messy. So, all in all... not super impressed, only really worth it for under $100. 3So good the wife won't let me keep it in the shop I'm DIY guy with a fair number of 18v Makitas. So I bought this vac to pickup sawdust. But my wife commandeered it because it's so handy 'round the house. This vac is is as well balanced as a good sword. So, one time, (and this was hilarious), my guests and I were highly entertained by watching her use it to pluck mosquitoes and moths right out of the air during a recent party because guests were leaving the patio door open. Note: She stuffed a paper towel in the wand to keep the critters from escaping between hunting sessions.I only wish they'd sell a handy hanger for it because I find it laying here or there instead of hanging in a place of honor via a wall mount.Actually, every now and then, I consider buying another one just for me... 5Small, lightweight vac for little jobs With so many 5-star, Verified Purchase reviews, my expectations were high. After receiving it, I m a bit underwhelmed and need to consider if it s really a good value with respect to the price point and other cordless vacs on the market- including the Dyson sticks. I know cross-shopping this against the Dyson is like cross-shopping VWs and Porsches. I think most people, myself included, end up looking at the Makita because they can t justify the price difference for the Dyson models. However price is one thing, value is something entirely different- where value is the benefits divided by the price. Benefits, of course, are subjective and each person will have their own criteria.First, the pros and cons:Pros1. Lightweight, nice balance2. Very good suction (not sure about the reviews that complain about the suction, it s pretty good)3. Maneuverable4. Removable and easily sourced Lithium-Ion battery, which is common across many Makita tools5. Doubles as a dust buster on steroids6. While the power button/trigger does not lock in the on position, it is well placed and easy to operate.7. Fast recharge times8. Good run time9. Floor tool is not bad on tile and wood floors10. Reasonably quietCons1. Battery + charger represent more than half the cost of this package (~$95 on AMZ as of this writing)2. Replacement battery by itself is $60- though with the quality of this battery, may never need to replace it.3. Dust cup can be opened too easily (just adjusting the floor tool in wrong direction will cause the cup to open)4. Dust and dirt accumulate on the filter, which makes cleaning/emptying more of a chore. Vacs like the Dyson have the cyclonic/windtunnel action that sends the dirt to a collection area and not necessarily into the filter.5. Tube sizes are on the small side, so no repurposing tools from other vacs6. Floor attachment is on the small side too and is not motorized nor has suction-powered beater action (yeah, knew this upfront, but if consider the *value* of a Dyson, this could be a factor). This will have limited use for carpets and area rugs.7. No HEPA filter (though there is a reviewer with a DIY mod)8. No included tool ideal for use in the car, other than a crevice tool9. Plastic is on the cheap side10. Battery charger is a monster- same pro-grade unit sold for power tools. It has a fan to keep the battery from overheating while its fast charging. It s a bit hard to classify this as a con since it and the battery are the most deluxe thing about the whole package, and disproportionally so.Other thoughts1. If you are all in with Makita tools and have other LXT items, then presumably you already have compatible batteries and charger, so you could opt for the $80 *tool only* model. Or get this and have a spare (2 Ah) battery and rapid charger.3. I think the Dyson battery powered stick vacs could (and probably do) serve as upright replacements, this is more suited to quick cleanups, and small areas.4. By far, the best battery/charger combo amongst its peers. In conclusion, I'll keep it. It won't replace my plug in upright for general duty and carpeting, but fills a niche for quick, spot cleanups and dust buster type work.UPDATE 4/5/2016After living with this vac for about 3 weeks, I find I use it a lot. The lightweight and small form-factor make it very convenient and not a chore to use at all. My plug-in upright is feeling neglected. I'm leaving the rating at 4-stars, since the dust cup being too easy to open and the dirt accumulation on the filter (#3 and #4 in my Cons in the original review) remain annoying. 4If You're Short Buy It, If You're Not, Look Elsewhere Why is it that so often there is a serious issue with a product but there is no mention about it in the reviews? This cordless vacuum works well and has good suction but it is way too short and there is no way to extend the length of the tube that attaches to what is essentially a hand vac. This product desperately needs either another shorter extension to add to the one short tube that comes with it or an adjustable tube. If you are taller than about 5'4" or 5'5" you're not going to find this vacuum comfortable to use. Too bad that a $.25 piece of plastic kept this from being a five star product. 2
