Customer Reviews

Great product for the price!Got this just in time to catch the Olympics (which, actually, was my primary reason for getting one...I had cable TV when they did the initial changeover to digital broadcasting, then got rid of the cable because of some issues with the provider...but didn't really miss the content, since I rarely had time for TV anyway...but on with the review...)Easy to hook up, worked really well once I got it hooked up to a digital antenna (if you get this box and don't already have an antenna, plan on getting one). The set-up process is a little convoluted, but the owner's manual talks you through it pretty effectively and once you've been through it the first time, it's not too difficult to follow. The layout of the remote seems a little odd to me, and the inclusion of separate cursor buttons still throws me off after a month. The advantage to the shape of the remote is that I have no trouble being sure it's the right one, as it's a totally different shape and feel from my TV or DVD remote. But, for the price, I don't think you can really beat it. It's a bare-bones converter box, with minimal extras (that I never use, anyway), and if all you're looking for is something to let you see the digital broadcasts on your analog TV, and you aren't worried about PIP, DVR, and all the other bells and whistles, this is a really good way to go. 4This is better than paying high price cable Bill'sThis is better than paying high price cable Bill's. I live in an apartment complex, make sure you buy extra colax cable, make sure your flat antenna is away from upstairs traffic if on lower floors, if not you'll interference and possible loss of signal. Know the direction of tv transmitters and have antenna facing for best signal. 5Very Good Value, although affected TV's volumeI had to replace my Lasonic LTA-260 that lasted less than 2 yrs. The Magnavox TB110MW was shipped quickly; super easy to set up; and there was an unexpected surprise as it picked up a (longer distance) major channel that I wasn't receiving before. I thought that aspect was solely a function of my (outside) antenna. Who knew that the converter box also factored into how many channels you can pick up?The only negative is that it also - detrimentally - affected the volume of my TV. It is not as loud as it was before even after turning every conceivable internal adjustment to the highest settings. While I can still hear it OK, I'd like to be able to adjust it 5-10 decibels higher. That factor keeps me from giving it 5 stars. I can't evaluate its longevity, but it seems to be a quality electronic and for the price...a very good value. 4Satellite TV Gone!I have to admit I was a little leary about giving up my satellite TV, but with the few channels I watch I thought I was wasting more money than I could justify by keeping satellite TV. I didn't think I would be able to hook up the converter box with the Leaf Antenna, but it was effortless--and I am not tech savvy at all. But I hooked up everything, scanned the channels and I have about 18 channels...the most important channel is ABC so I can watch all the great shows that I love. I wish I had did this years ago...and the initial cost is way less than my satellite bill. The picture is clear and I am so happy with the product! Money well spent!!! 5Magnavox DTV Digital to Analog Converter1) It took a bit of time to figure out the instructions that were relevant to setting the device up with various in-and-out wires: A bit disconcerting for busy people.2) It took a fair bit of effort and some cello-tape to get one of the connectors to actually slot in to its connection hole: Frustrating till the eureka moment when it finally slipped in.3) The setup screen did not automatically appear so I manually selected setup: Not a big deal for me but might be irksome for someone less tech savvy.4) It would have been nice if the product description on Amazon.com made it clear that a separate antenna was required rather than one finding out only when one sees the big graphic on the box: Missed Game 7 of the Fall Classic 'coz I had this device and no antenna.5) Reception is not special for all channels: Probably more related to the antenna I have, though.6) For about $50-odd, worth it! 3A good product at a good priceI purchased this reconditioned unit to attach to an analog TV. My purpose was to have a unit in the bedroom, and also to have an inhouse test unit to check for interference from my Amateur Radio Gear. I had read an article that Television Interference (TVI)had been a problem with converter units. The unit arrived on time, and in the original packaging. It was fairly easy to install, that is after I got past the experimental phase and looked more closely at the directions. It was simple enough with an antenna switch, to connect both the TV and DVD player, since I had two RF modulators to adapt a coax connected TV to a three wire RCA connection. I had thought there was a problem with either the antenna, or the unit, because it would scan but find no channels, when the problem was with the connection. Just an example of operator error (mine) versus equipment error. The next step, after getting a little break in the weather, will be to install an outside antenna to receive more channels than just the one only 14 miles away. An indoor antenna, even an amplified one, is not the most efficient for digital signals, when used inside a manufactured home. Plus, installing the outside antenna on the same mast as the one used for a Amateur Radio antenna, will be a better test for TVI. 4Please Don't Waste Your Time Or Money! This device does not work. Judging from other feedback, it would appear this is not an uncommon problem for these items sold by this company. I would not recommend purchasing anything from them since they are apparently willing to sell broken items to consumers via Amazon. It will not power on. The green light flashes for a brief period of time, then shuts itself off. A complete wast of money. 1WELL FOR SOME REASO OURS APPEARED TO BE USEDThere was absolutely no possible way for this box to work! We have had this brand in the past WORK, but our experience this time sucked! My daughter was ripping her hair out in frustration, and my soon to be husband was angered with disgust!!!!!!!!! The remote gets a five star rating because he was able to use it with his own box! But rest assured our problems were cleared up when purchasing a CHEAPER and more RELIABLE AND DEPENDABLE CONVERTER BOX. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. 2Works fine so far, overpricedAll these boxes have reviews about them saying they work at first but break later. Well, I bought another brand of this device and it did work at first but later broke. And with this one I just bought, it works as it should right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it broke later. I kept the box, ready to take it back. You should buy whatever you need, but keep the box so you'll be prepared to take it back. Of course this also means you should probably buy form Amazon itself instead of some random seller. I got this for another member of the household. I don't need one for my TV, and recommend people to buy a better TV that doesn't need these type of boxes. I will update if it breaks later, it has only been about a month so far. 3The one channel I get now is pretty good.....Not sure how to rate this converter box since what I purchased was supposedly NEW, but the seller ( Heartland America )sent me a "reconditioned" one instead. There was a sticker on the last page of the owners manual saying it was a remanufactured/reconditioned box or I would have never known. ( which changes the warranty, too, by the way ).Could be the product just is defective or it could be I'm just in a bad area with weak signals. I do live in a small town that is at least 20-30 miles from most of the transmitters, but still figure I should get more than one channel, PBS, which is all that comes in at all. ( UNC-TV). According to the antenna web site and also the dtv dot gov site, I should be able to pick up a moderate signal for at least 5 channels. ( the PBS one, a CBS affiliate in Spartanburg, SC, an independant channel, and an ABC affiliate which is the closest city ( Asheville, NC ) to my own city, about 35 miles away. The converter box, however, displays "no signal" for ALL channels except the UNC-TV PBS one. I have to admit it's a beautiful picture and clear sound, but one channel doesn't make the purchase of this converter box a good one. I know I have the box hooked up correctly and had just bought a brand new rabbit ears type antenna, so all I can do is assume there is either nothing viewable for my area ( downtown smalltown with no local stations ), or something is wrong with the box itself. It also seems to not be able to use the pass through feature at all as nothing happens when I choose it and it just goes back to the scanning and then lands back on PBS again when I hold down the set up button 3 seconds as the manual says to do if nothing happens.Oh well, I give it a two star rating. One star for being cute and unobtrusive and one because I'm unsure if it's the box itself at fault or just the one horse town I live in. 2
