Customer Reviews

Good light but prefer button switch Gave this flashlight a try based on the reviews. In spite of its strong light output, I'll admit I was disappointed with the lack of a button switch. Other reviewers stated that the simple twist system would last longer so I ordered it. Potentially true, but twisting the head to turn it on made it slightly loose for my liking. Not a deal breaker, I've just grown fond of the button switch design on my other Maglites. 4Very happy with purchase This is yet another excellent Maglite I have bought. I wanted a small C cell Maglite that could use my nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries and this Maglite worked out well for me. It's small yet just as bright as the 4-cell incandescent Maglite. Actually it's brighter at 177 lumens. I have the 2 cell one in blue. I thought that I might miss having a button with different features on it but I found this light has been so much more convenient because I can easily rotate it with my thumb to turn it on and I never really use strobe anyway. Nor do I ever use those dimming settings on flashlights either. This is just a simple and very durable flashlight for someone who needs a basic flashlight for repeated use in a law enforcement setting or in an emergency setting. If you're working on your car though it's probably best to have a button because it's going to be hard to turn this thing with very slippery hands. Not impossible however just difficult. 5Oh the suprise when I first turned it on and saw that good old MagLite ring and hotspot After using a variety of MagLites over the years from keychain versions to 3 D-cell, this is my first LED version from them. Oh the suprise when I first turned it on and saw that good old MagLite ring and hotspot! Technichally that`s a downside, but it felt like "home" to me, haha! I bought this for use at work as a maintenance mechanic at a printing plant. The twist switch can also be a bummer when holding something on place with one hand and trying to activate the light with the other (especially when everything is greasy and slippery), but I love that its a plain old flashlight that takes standard batteries and has only two modes- "on" and "off". Manufacturers, please keep the fancy blinkies and multi color options and SOS messages to yourselves! I have already gone through my first set of C batteries and suspect it gave me a little longer than the stated two hours burn time, though it's hard to say for sure. This light just a little bulky on my belt and a bit too big to hold in my mouth when I want to (yeah I know, I have a head lamp also, but sometimes that`s where you end up anyway). I think I`ll get a 2 X AA LED Mag for my belt and relegate this one to my toolbox. Bottom line: good flashlight = on/off, standard batteries, tough and dependable. Made in USA is a nice bonus. 3Great long distance light. This light works very well. On mine the focus adjustment allows you to eliminate the central dark spot mentioned in some comments. Maglite make great lights, rugged, waterproof, and very reliable. Another service to their customers to aid selection is the information supplied with each light and on their website. I wanted this for a weapon light -- it fits 30mm rings with a little tweeking -- and I needed the range. Lumens are meaningless as they are the total wide angle light output, not the beam brightness. Maglite tells you the beam center brightness is 25373 candelas and that the useful illumination range is 319 meters. A check of their website will tell you that their standard is 0.25 foot-candles at the specified range. As it turns out, this is much farther that some non-focus flashlights with ratings of 500 to 700 lumens. Lumens don't matter, center beam brightness does. I only wish they made a version of this with a push-on switch that doesn't affect the focus. It must be an ON/OFF switch with no other function.Somehow the marketing nuts have decided that every flashlight needs OFF / high / low / SOS flash selected by pushes on the power button. The problem is that you don't know what you will get when you push the button...sometimes one thing and sometimes another...useless.I need my weapon light to come on fully and predictably. Aiming to an SOS beat is silly. 5Handy, compact, and bright. I love the compact size with such a powerful beam but I was surprised that the light turned on by a twist rather than a switch. That was my shortfall in assuming rather than reading the product description closely.Nonethess, I'm happy. The light can still be turned on one-handed by gripping the body with three fingers and a palm whole twisting the head with thumb and forefinger.Best of all, it fits into the center console storage are of our newest car. I have had another 2-C cell light for over 20 years that we keep in the center console of the other car. Adding the switch to the barrel of the light is approximately equivalent to the length of another battery. (See photo)As always, you can not go wrong with a Maglite. 5Underwhelming LED I've always loved my Maglites, so am surprised to be writing this review. I'm sorry to report that Maglites's move to LEDs, at least on this particular product, leaves a great deal to be desired. They are indeed brighter than all prior bulb types, but there is an annoying dead area in the center of the beam. It's not going to keep one from being able to find something or someone in the dark, it just seems to be an unforced error in the design of the lens. The power and brightness are underwhelming and not nearly to the standard available from so many "tactical" style flashlights that are equally well built, smaller, and half or less than half the price of this Maglite. I always used Maglite as the gold standard for flashlights in the pre LED days, and looked forward to getting this one, in expectation it would set a new standard for compact LEDs for me. It didn't. I suspect the voltage difference between the 2 C cells used here, and the one lithium ion battery, even in AA size (the 14500), explains some of the difference in brightness, but even when those tactical lights are loaded with 3 AAAs where that's an option (the 18750 compatible lights that can go either way), the tactical light remains significantly brighter. Maglite is going to really need to step up, fix their lenses, offer lights that use the higher voltage lithium ion batteries, and find a way to outshine their competition to remain relevant in today's flashlight market. I won't buy another until those improvements are made. 3I can now prove this one is Mine! LOL With the color I can tell hubby, that one is Mine! LOL. He loses things, mainly tools, as he lays them down and forgets to pick them up and return them to where they belong. Most of the time I can find them in a few minutes. But for some reason, not the flashlights. I put black mags in six rooms of our house. We have only three left, and one is one he got out of his truck when it was totaled (someone hit our parked truck). He reminds me that is His flashlight and I shouldn't have it. Where is mine? He tells me I lost it. un huh. So, now I have the grey one in my desk in the study, black on in the bedroom, one in the living room and our son has one. His is back in the car. I still have to buy a couple of more.As for the quality, it is a mag, you get a great flashlight have never had a problem with one. Only one "flaw" and that is my pickiness, I like to push a button, not have to turn the top of it. 4Mag-Lite, three C-cell, LED flashlight. NO ON/OFF SWITCH. Twist the head to turn it on and focus. A fairly small diameter head on this flashlight, and it is turned on by rotating the head. There is NO on/off button or slide switch. As with my other flashlights, I will be ordering rechargeable, high-capacity batteries for it. I keep two full sets for each flashlight, which allows my flashlights to be ready and usable at all times. Initially, when turning this on, it was a bit inconsistent but now appears to have things lightly worn in and it seems to be working better. The beam needs to be focused every time the flashlight is turned on, but that happens easily and quickly. Still, I'd rather have an on/off switch. The flashlight is very bright and covers a good distance and the area in the focused beam is very visible. I can see well, out to approx 125 yards. This three C-cell flashlight should be very good for most needs. It isn't overly heavy or large, although the C-cell size means it will probably need fresh batteries more often. This is a good size to carry in vehicles for emergency needs. Ladies may like the 2-cell size flashlight instead of this one because of it's slightly shorter length and lighter weight. 4The quality isn't with the name any longer. Now it is garbage. Like many others, I have bought and owned Maglites before and I bought this based upon their previously great reputation. But this light sucks. The batteries rattle around in the handle and when I rotate the head to turn it on the light only goes on about 10% of the time. The rest of the time I have to shake it and fiddle with the head until the light comes on. Once on it is a great light but I can't rely on it for a walk at night because it simply won't stay on. I would have sent it back to Amazon but I live in Cancun and only get back to the US once every 3-4 months and they would not take it back after that much time. But I am not happy with this light and when I get back to the US in March I will head to Home Depot and buy a decent light--but not a Maglite. 3The perfect sized flashlight, takes "C" batteries yay! Awesome flash light perfect size, takes "C" batteries which is great. I have noticed that most new flashlights are super small and take AA batteries which are not that powerful and generally do not last as long as larger C or D batteries. On the other hand, most old school flashlights like an old clunky plastic one that I just donated before getting this one are too big and bulky and take heavy D batteries which makes them harder to travel with. However, this one is the perfect size. Just a tad bigger and much more powerful than most of the small flashlights yet much sleeker and compact than the old big clunky flashlights. This is actually more powerful, bright, and compact than the big flashlight I just got rid of that took D batteries but wasn't very bright. It is also more powerful and brighter than my smaller supposedly super bright flashlight that takes AA batteries and is just about 4 ounces heavier. They don't waste any space, the flashlight handle is basically the size of the 2 C batteries that fit inside it. 5
