In his book, Victor Hugo is making a documentary chronicling life on death rows and contrasting them with maximum security "lifers" in 19th century France, As an opponent of capital punishment, Hugo argues that the death penalty undermines the fair administration of justice, Hugo does not believe that the death penalty should be applied to any human being, even in the case of horrific crimes,. For him, capital punishment can never be administered fairly and justly. 5excellent perspectiveI read it in French, then in English, then in French again. It's a good book to learn to read in French. It took until the last day to arrive. That said it was in relatively good I just got another thing of edible arrangements hahahaha 3Oh, Hugo!A set of very interesting stories from the teen-aged Hugo. It's hard to believe her wrote "Bug Jargal" when he was only 17, but a great deal of that youthful heroism, adventure-seeking, and action story comes through in the story. This is also a good read for those interested in the Haitian revolution and independence, neatly woven into stories in which Hugo's own royalist ideas come through. 4Good book in its original tongueI bought this (digital version) mainly to read the French version of the book since I wasn't too fond of some of the English translations I was reading. I finally found a decent English translation of the work (Moncrieff), but will play around with translating some of the French versions material. Good price of course. 4A masterpieceI read this book decades ago, now I'm just searching it for my son who is finishing his studies in France. This is not a review of a particular edition, it's a stating on the original french text of "Le dernier jour d'un condamn ". This work is a masterpiece of literature of all times. It is written in the first person, the title tells it all, now it's up to you to find the best EN translation or to read it in FR. You won't be deceived: this text belongs to the cultural heritage of mankind. 5
