Customer Reviews

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!I bought this lock to use while on business in Grand Cayman. I live in Chicago, so the travel time was pretty long.I have a brand new Sony Vaio that I was going to use on the job and I decided to get a lock to prevent theft. The directions were hard to understand and it was nearly impossible to set a new combination. When I finally managed to change it, I put the lock on attached to my work table. The work day went by fine. I was thankful for the lock even though there wasn't really any worry of theft with the company I was working for. At the end of the day, I went to unlock the combination and it had "Forgotten" my combination. After an hour of trying every combination starting from 000, I had to get it removed by a locksmith so I could return home with my brand new laptop without the table attached.Kensington was COMPLETELY unhelpful when i addressed this problem and they refuse to get back to me with any kind of refund of any sort.DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! 1I'm still using this lock! It's been 13 years and running. Never had a laptop stolen 5Not bad, but don't expect muchNot bad as a low level deterrent to theft, but as other reviewers have pointed out, it's not impossible to remove by damaging the cable, the lock, or just ripping it out of the Kensington lock port on the computer. Since each laptop manufacturer has their own way of making the port, you can't blame the lock if the port is weak. That said, the combo is small, and rather like a cheap bicycle lock. I bought mine for convenience, so that I would not have a key sticking out of the lock of the cable I carry in my bag. (I use a keyed model on my docking station at work.) It's not hard to set your own combo, but I did have some trouble fitting this lock into my T43. Turned out the end of the "tang" was too long to swivel in my laptop's lock port, so I had to file off about 1 mm of the tang for it to work. Your own experience may differ. If you really want your laptop theft-PROOF, don't leave it unattended. Period. If you want a little piece of mind while you take a meeting, lunch, or bio break, this -- like all cheap cable locks -- will provide sufficient deterrent to "opportunist" thieves. Professionals will be able to liberate your laptop in seconds. So if you're working in a theft-ridden locale ... take your laptop with you. 3Perfect!Well... it's a lock! Works like it should: I guess that laptop theft must be a thing of the past where I live because I couldn't find this in any local brick and mortar stores. But, Amazon had it and it got delivered to me directly. You have to wonder why physical shopping is down but Net shopping is up???? 5Not secure...please readLike other reviews, it took me a while to figure it out. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the lock off. I even tried every possible combination! Tech support informed me I had a defective lock, which I understand will happen with any product. Sometimes a bad egg gets put in the basket. Kensington offered to pay for my locksmith charges AND send me a new lock. That was great except this:I had to get my laptop to the locksmith. I was wondering how I was going to cut the cord. Scissors? Nah, too flimsy. Wire cutters? Maybe, but I'm sure I'll have to saw through it.It took one snip to cut the cable. Think of this item as a theft deterrent at best. Not secure at all. 1Not A Secure Lock - Read How I Removed ItI bought the Kensington ComboSaver to secure my laptop at work. The product was easy to use and the combo easy to change. I used it for about a week, and then needed to change the combination. I set the correct combo, flipped the lever, set the new combo, and flipped the lever back. I then locked my notebook as usual. At the end of the day, I set the new combo and the lock would not unlock. I set the old combo and that didn't work either. Maybe I did something wrong? The kicker is that I got some regular wire cutters and was able to pretty easily cut through the security cable, nipping at it bit by bit for a few minutes. I was shocked it was that easy. Next, to detach the lock from my laptop I used a regular battery powered drill with a regular drill bit and drilled through the end of the lock. Within just 5 minutes the end of the lock came off and using some needle nose pliers I pulled of each of the rings. Voila! 1No security & difficult to useNot a particularly easy lock to use (combo part rotates freely when not in computer, making it difficult to set the combo). Also changing combo is very easy to do accidently. However this is usually not a problem because it is incredibly easy to figure out the combo. I am not a professional lock picker, and I am able to break the combo without any difficulty (which is a problem with many low quality combo locks, but this design try to avoid it at all).I've noticed a lot of people have a problem with the lock "spontaneously" changing combinations. It's probably not because the lock is defective. It's probably because they inadvertently changed the combination because the mechanism to change it is so easy to engage.I would definitely never suggest this product to anyone (unless I really wanted their computer). 1Reviews on Laptop locks[...] (under Alerts section) gave a poor ratings for this kind of Laptop locks. "Each of these locks can be easily bypassed, which can result in the theft of laptop computers within seconds, and without any forensic trace". Locks such as Kensington ComboSaver, Microsaver and Master Lock including Targus Defcon CL and Compucage Benji.MacWorld Magazine (May2005) Gave poor ratings to this kind of lock also.[...] 2A sad reflection on the state of US product designWell, first of all, I don't understand how this lock rates 2.8 out of 5 stars on Amazon (on the day I'm writing this review, Feb. 9, 2016), when 71% of reviewers gave it 1 or 2 stars and only 29% of reviewers gave it three stars or better. To glance at the three out of five stars shown on the Amazon summary, you'd think it was a decent product -- when in fact, more than two-thirds of purchasers thought it sucked (including me).First, it comes in one of those indestructible molded plastic hanging thingies that cuts your hand when you try to open it, with or without scissors. Then, the instructions really don't explain how the mechanism is supposed to work. Then, it's really easy to attach the lock to your laptop so the numbers are upside down, making them difficult to read when it's time to remove it. Then, there's a rubber washer on the lock mechanism that is guaranteed to pop off and disappear within five minutes, and I have no idea if it affects the function or whether Kensington designers merely put it on there for entertainment value. Then, even when you get the lock attached, it feels incredibly loose and flimsy. Then, as others have noted, there seems to be a substantial risk of the lock forgetting its combination, which means I'll leave it on the default setting, which obviously is not a good security practice. (It's kinda like using "password" as a password.)I bought the Kensington lock because I thought it would be decent quality. I could have gone to a well-known auction site and bought a similar style combination lock, with FOUR combo numbers instead of three, for approximately one-quarter of the price (including shipping) that I paid on Amazon for the Kensington unit. The cheapo lock is probably junk ... but so is the Kensington lock. So why pay four times the price? This is just a tiny example of what appears to be a huge problem in the US -- companies selling products of mediocre design, poor instructions, indifferent quality control and lack of support, then wondering why their market share is disappearing. Will I EVER pay extra for a Kensington product ever again? I doubt it. It's not that this lock is so bad ... it's that there's nothing about it, beyond a once-reputable brand name, to justify paying a premium for it.When Kensington goes to the big Chapter 11 in the sky and the company's product designers and marketing mavens begin their likely next careers, on the graveyard shift at 7-11, I hope they keep these comments in mind.Sad, just sad. 1nahUsed this thing maybe twice. A waste of money in my opinion. Construction was ok. Just not a product for me. 3
