Customer Reviews

Functional and adjustable Used this for a Nutone Kitchen ceiling exhaust fan and it works perfectly. It replaced the plastic piece of junk that I originally bought with the fan which never worked well then died after a year. This one you can adjust the range and low speed to use the full turning of the knob. Not a pretty as the plastic one, but much heavier duty and functional. 5Great unit, but know some details about what you'll be controlling first! This device uses a triac type scr to control the speed of specific types of motors. Manufacturer's spec sheet lists shaded pole, permanent split capacitor, and universal (AC-DC) motors. This covers most small air moving systems. Since it's rated 2.5A maximum you'll want to also check that your motor's maximum current requirement falls below 2.5A @125VAC. I'm using it on a very low wattage universal motor drawing about 0.12A and it works perfectly. I didn't even need to adjust the trim pot for the low speed setting.Knowing the type of motor and its current requirements is important if you want good speed control over the full range of settings. For instance, the small motor I mentioned above will NOT operated properly on the larger 15A maximum speed controls listed. With those controls the motor only runs when the control is getting near its maximum setting. Here's the manufacturer's data sheet for those wanting more detail: [...]If Amazon won't let me post the web address, just go to kbelectronics - it's a dot com site. 5Works fine so far, for the simple piece of equipment that it is I have this running in a chicken coop - from the main power, it's this variable speed controller, then a thermostat, then an exhaust fan. The thermostat is just an on/off switch controlled by temperature, so this variable speed controller lets me adjust the fan speed beyond that. However, since I don't live in the chicken coop and can't hear the fan noise, I now realize I don't really need this variable speed controller. I just keep it set at the max (which is what it would be without a speed controller). If you have a thermostat and don't mind the fan noise, you probably don't need one of these. 5Works as expected & there is an adjustment screw for the range of the dial. Works with the Majestic fk12 fan / blower kit. My blower didn't come w/the majestic scvs (variable speed control) so I bought this to replace the on/off switch I had. This unit does have an off position that clearly clicks when turned off. The fan stalled about 2/3 of the way through the rotation of the knob. My unit had an adjustment on the front that allowed me to adjust the range of the dial. After adjusting, the fan worked all the way through the range of the dial. While turned all the way to the left the fan is now at its slowest without stalling. 5As Expected Worked nicely in adjusting the blower motor for our gas log set/gas log insert. The provided instructions allow you to adjust this control to the specifics of your motor-so that it adjusts the speed across the full range of the control. You don't want to turn this control on so as the motor stalls out from lack of voltage. As others have mentioned-as you turn the control dial counterclockwise, it starts at the highest/fastest setting. As you continue to turn CCW it gets slower. I did not need the metal cover plate as this was used in a double gang box. 5Works but limits max power capability to device Works on an in-line duct fan I have installed in an HVAC return duct. However, when cranked to maximum, my fan does not run at full power. I verified this by removing the switch and connecting power directly to the van, at which point it spun up much faster. My suspicion is the switch is siphoning some power due to how the rheostat functions, and it's probably a by-product with some devices. I'm waiting for feedback from the fan manufacturer. If it turns out the fan is capable of drawing more than 5 amps, I'll revisit and edit this review (that's the only other reason I can think of why the fan won't operate at full speed with this switch). 3Works for Kozy Heat gas fireplace I have a Kozy Heat 961 direct vent fireplace that I bought used a installed few years ago. The fan worked well, but was very loud (full blast). I was not given the fan speed control, and I had no idea it was supposed to be there. I just connected th AC to the fan via the thermal switch, and it ran fine (but loud). After researching the installation manual a bit more, I was able to find the part number for the Kozy Heat controller, and even found one available online. I chose this one instead based on it being about 1/3 the price, and per Q&A info, it should work with my fan (0.8A).The installation is simple. I installed mine in a plastic 'wall outlet' box sitting on the metal plate with the fireplace controls. Yes, there are only two wires, so I installed it in series with the 'hot' lead on the way to the thermal switch. Although the dial is a bit sensitive, I was able to easily adjust the fan to a more reasonable (about half speed). I have perhaps the first half of the 'dial' before the fan stalls. The (small) installation manual is very basic so don't expect it to be very helpful. Since my install was internal, I chose to use a plastic cover plate instead of the metal 'Vari-Speed' cover since I didn't want any metal to metal contact and potential rattling. 4Works great - don't forget about the low speed (stall) adjustment! Working great so far for controlling a radon fan. Pretty sure my fan is largely oversized - no point in it straining or sucking down a bunch of power running unnecessarily hard. This allows a tremendous range of control, and now I'm testing to see how low I can go and keep the readings down.NOTE: There is a low speed adjustment - use it! :) At first I was very disappointed that it didn't seem to do much. After refreshing my memory that there was a low speed adjustment (so you don't stall the fan) the range was superb, and it's nice that you can tweak it to prevent stalling at the lowest setting. It may sound silly, but I was surprised (in a good way) that the cover plate was metal (aluminum?).Control was very smooth, both in physical feel and speed adjustment. My only grip is that the low speed adjustment is on the side of the controller instead of the front, so you have to pull it out of the box to adjust it. That said, how often do you really make that adjustment? Minor gripe. 5Great for a fireplace blower fan. Easy installation to replace a normal switch. My unit actually had two red wires (to connect to the two existing black wires on the switch) and a green wire for ground. I used it to add speed control on my gas fireplace blower fan. That thing was ridiculously loud at full speed, but now I can keep it reasonable. My only complaint is the wall plate... It is a bit ugly and industrial looking. I'll probably get a new one to replace it. 4Works great as an exhaust fan control This controller allows a 500 CFM kitchen exhaust fan to operate smoothly through its entire speed range. It features an integrated off switch and starts on the high setting to prevent the motor stalling. Additionally, it has an adjustable low speed setting which also prevents stalling at low speed. 5
